Book Synopsis Minorities in America by : Wayne C. Miller
Download or read book Minorities in America written by Wayne C. Miller and published by Penn State University Press. This book was released on 1990-10-10 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This series continues the "splendid achievement" and "monumental task" of Wayne Miller's A Comprehensive Bibliography for the Study of American Minorities, which surveyed the literature through 1975. Minorities in America, a series of annual bibliographies, continues the project from that time. A new feature, summaries of nearly all the works listed, has been added. Each volume contains about 7,500 entries for works dealing with the life and culture of 41 ethnic minorities ranging from Arab-Americans to Yugoslav-Americans, including indigenous peoples and immigrants. Within each group entries are arranged by subject areas -- history, sociology, economics, politics and law, education and language, religion, women, biography, literature and the arts -- with further subdivision when warranted. The entries were compiled through a survey of 900 journals and a review of the publications of American university presses, commercial publishers, and the Government Printing Office; abstracts of theses were similarly reviewed. Summaries of books and monographs were prepared by teams of professors, and abstracts of other materials were prepared by graduate students. All entries were cross-checked by other team members before being arranged by category. The burgeoning literature on American ethnic minorities covers a wide spectrum of research interests, making the Annual Bibliographies a valuable resource to students and schilars in many disciplines, particularly the humanities (art, folklore, history, literature, music), the social and behavioral sciences, and the applied fields (education, business and public administration, social work). Minorities in America will also serve many users of public and school libraries: teachers and pupils, members of ethnic or local history groups, and all citizens seeking information about indigenous or immigrant minorities.

Book Synopsis Racism in the United States by : Meyer Weinberg
Download or read book Racism in the United States written by Meyer Weinberg and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 1990-05-21 with total page 704 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume represents the most comprehensive book-length bibliography on the subject of racism available in the United States. Compiler Meyer Weinberg has surveyed a wide-ranging group of material and classified it under 87 subject headings, drawing on articles, books, congressional hearings and reports, theses and dissertations, research reports, and investigative journalism. Historical references cover the long history of racism, while the heightened awareness and activity of the recent past is also addressed in detail. In addition to works that fit the narrow definition of racism as a mode of oppression or group denial of rights based on color, Weinberg includes references dealing with sexism, antisemitism, economic exploitation, and similar forms of dehumanization. References are grouped under a series of subject headings that include Civil Rights, Desegregation, Housing, Socialism and Racism, Unemployment, and Violence against Minorities. Items which do not have self-explanatory titles are annotated, and virtually every section is thoroughly cross-referenced. Also included is one section of carefully selected references on racism in countries other than the United States. Unlike the remainder of the book, this section is not comprehensive, but rather provides an opportunity to view racism comparatively. The volume concludes with an author index. This work will be a significant addition to both academic and public libraries, as well as an important resource for courses in racism, sociology, and black history.

Book Synopsis Expanding Underrepresented Minority Participation by : Institute of Medicine
Download or read book Expanding Underrepresented Minority Participation written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2011-07-29 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In order for the United States to maintain the global leadership and competitiveness in science and technology that are critical to achieving national goals, we must invest in research, encourage innovation, and grow a strong and talented science and technology workforce. Expanding Underrepresented Minority Participation explores the role of diversity in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) workforce and its value in keeping America innovative and competitive. According to the book, the U.S. labor market is projected to grow faster in science and engineering than in any other sector in the coming years, making minority participation in STEM education at all levels a national priority. Expanding Underrepresented Minority Participation analyzes the rate of change and the challenges the nation currently faces in developing a strong and diverse workforce. Although minorities are the fastest growing segment of the population, they are underrepresented in the fields of science and engineering. Historically, there has been a strong connection between increasing educational attainment in the United States and the growth in and global leadership of the economy. Expanding Underrepresented Minority Participation suggests that the federal government, industry, and post-secondary institutions work collaboratively with K-12 schools and school systems to increase minority access to and demand for post-secondary STEM education and technical training. The book also identifies best practices and offers a comprehensive road map for increasing involvement of underrepresented minorities and improving the quality of their education. It offers recommendations that focus on academic and social support, institutional roles, teacher preparation, affordability and program development.
