Book excerpt: The Cambridge Companion to Homer is a guide to the essential aspects of Homeric criticism and scholarship, including the reception of the poems in ancient and modern times. Written by an international team of scholars, it is intended to be the first port of call for students at all levels, with introductions to important subjects and suggestions for further exploration. Alongside traditional topics like the Homeric Question, the divine apparatus of the poems, the formulae, the characters and the archaeological background, there are detailed discussions of similes, speeches, the poet as story-teller and the genre of epic both within Greece and worldwide. The reception chapters include assessments of ancient Greek and Roman readings as well as selected modern interpretations from the eighteenth century to the present day. Chapters on Homer in English translation and Homer in the history of ideas round out the collection.

Book excerpt: The evolution and manipulation of language from the celebrated author of After Babel. “A keenly discriminating literary mind at work on what it loves” (The New York Times Book Review). Language and Silence is a book about language—and politics, meaning, silence, and the future of literature. Originally published between 1958 and 1966, the essays that make up this collection ponder whether we have passed out of an era of verbal primacy and into one of post-linguistic forms—or partial silence. Steiner explores the idea of the abandonment of contemporary literary criticism, from the classics to the works of William Shakespeare, Lawrence Durell, Thomas Mann, Leon Trotsky, and more.

Book excerpt: The nature of divine speech in Antiquity in the Mediterranean Basin has often been the object of scholarly analysis, especially regarding its divinatory context and questions of genre and rhetoric. The present volume not only provokes a dialogue with this past research, but seeks to respond to a problem that has received little consideration until now: the articulation of divine speech with the various forms of its representation (linguistic, literary, and material). The aim is to analyze the nature of divine speech through its materiality and the impact of the latter on the former's definition and evolution.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Epic is dialectally mixed but Ionic at its core. The proper dialect for elegy was Ionic, even when composed by Tyrtaeus in Sparta or Theognis in Megara, both Doric areas. Choral lyric poets represent the major dialect areas: Aeolic (Sappho, Alcaeus), Ionic (Anacreon, Archilochus, Simonides), and Doric (Alcman, Ibycus, Stesichorus, Pindar). Most distinctive are the Aeolic poets. The rest may have a preference for their own dialect (some more than others) but in their Lesbian veneer and mixture of Doric and Ionic forms are to some extent dialectally indistinguishable. All of the ancient authors use a literary language that is artificial from the point of view of any individual dialect. Homer has the most forms that occur in no actual dialect. In this volume, by means of dialectally and chronologically arranged illustrative texts, translated and provided with running commentary, some of the early Greek authors are compared against epigraphic records, where available, from the same period and locality in order to provide an appreciation of: the internal history of the Ancient Greek language and its dialects; the evolution of the multilectal, artificial poetic language that characterizes the main genres of the most ancient Greek literature, especially Homer / epic, with notes on choral lyric and even the literary language of the prose historian Herodotus; the formulaic properties of ancient poetry, especially epic genres; the development of more complex meters, colometric structure, and poetic conventions; and the basis for decisions about text editing and the selection of a manuscript alternant or emendation that was plausibly used by a given author.

Book Synopsis Florida by : Apuleius

Book excerpt: In recent years there has been growing interest in Apuleius' works. Notably his famous novel Metamorphoses and his speeches are increasingly appreciated as the special products of a Second Sophist writing in Latin. In the Florida, a collection of 23 excerpts of speeches, we have a unique example of Roman demonstrative rhetoric. In the text we see Apuleius performing before great audiences, and even in the theatre of Carthage. He delivers speeches on topics as diverse as the eye of the eagle, the inventions of Hippias, or the distinctive features of the parrot. The speaker's wide literary talents, his education and health, and his excellent relations with Carthage and the audience at large, are all put on display with manifest pride. This makes the Florida an indispensable text for anyone interested in second century Latin literature, Second Sophistic, culture and education in Roman Africa, or the author Apuleius. A modern commentary on this brilliant collection has been a desideratum in Apuleian scholarship for a long time. Vincent Hunink has now edited the Florida with an extensive English commentary, in which the literary and rhetorical features of the text are highlighted. Particular attention is paid to the strategies of the speaker and to his exquisite, extravagant style, full of rare or newly coined words and richly adorned with effects of sound and rhythm. Each of the 23 fragments is given a separate introduction, followed by a detailed commentary. The new edition enables readers to gain a better understanding of Apuleius as the great sophist and showman that he was. The volume contains an introduction, a Latin text (based on Helm's Teubner text, but with numerous returns to the text of the manuscripts), a commentary (150 pages), bibliography and indices.
