Book Synopsis Red Coats and Wild Birds by : Kirsten A. Greer
Download or read book Red Coats and Wild Birds written by Kirsten A. Greer and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the nineteenth century, Britain maintained a complex network of garrisons to manage its global empire. While these bases helped the British project power and secure trade routes, they served more than just a strategic purpose. During their tours abroad, many British officers engaged in formal and informal scientific research. In this ambitious history of ornithology and empire, Kirsten A. Greer tracks British officers as they moved around the world, just as migratory birds traversed borders from season to season. Greer examines the lives, writings, and collections of a number of ornithologist-officers, arguing that the transnational encounters between military men and birds simultaneously shaped military strategy, ideas about race and masculinity, and conceptions of the British Empire. Collecting specimens and tracking migratory bird patterns enabled these men to map the British Empire and the world and therefore to exert imagined control over it. Through its examination of the influence of bird watching on military science and soldiers' contributions to ornithology, Red Coats and Wild Birds remaps empire, nature, and scientific inquiry in the nineteenth-century world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Compendium of British Ornithology: With a Reference to the Anatomy and Physiology of Birds In the present enlightened era, the study of Natural History is so generally appreciated as to require little in its commendation or defence. It forms the basis of the most interesting and useful researches, and is connected in a greater or less degree with almost every pursuit of philosophy. But independently of its importance in augmenting the store of our knowledge, and elucidating other branches of science, it is highly advantageous in affording intellectual employment of an innocent and useful kind. The powers of the mind become torpid without stimulus, and decay without employment. And to those, whose situation and rank in life preclude the necessity of ordinary business, the researches of nature afford mental excitement combined with interest and delight. Unlike the gratifications of the sensualist and the dissipations of the gay, its pleasures are rational and pure. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Book of Birds: Introduction to Ornithology, John Faaborg, renowned expert on avian ecology and conservation, brings a fresh and accessible sensibility to the study of ornithology. In this beautifully illustrated volume, Faaborg’s approachable writing style will engage students and birders alike while introducing them to the study of the evolution, taxonomy, anatomy, physiology, diversity, and behavior of birds. With its unique focus on ecology, the text emphasizes birds’ relationships with the environment and other species while showing the amazing diversity of avian life. Faaborg pays special attention to the roles that competition, community structure, and reproductive behavior play in the astonishingly varied and interesting lives of birds seen around the world. He discusses variations in anatomy, morphology, and behavior; explains why such vast diversity exists; and explores the ways in which different birds can share the same spaces. Artist Claire Faaborg brings the science behind this diversity to life through her unique, hand-drawn artwork throughout the book. Combining vibrant visuals and knowledgeable insights, Book of Birds offers readers a firm foundation in the field of ornithology and an invaluable resource for understanding birds from an ecological and evolutionary perspective.

Book excerpt: Essential Ornithology provides the reader with a concise but comprehensive introduction to the biology of birds, one of the most widely studied taxonomic groups. The book begins by considering the dinosaur origins of birds and their subsequent evolution. Development, anatomy, and physiology are then discussed followed by chapters devoted to avian reproduction, migration, ecology, and conservation. Sections dealing with aspects of bird/human relationships and bird conservation give the book an applied context. This new edition has been thoroughly updated, providing new information from rapidly-developing fields including the avian fossil record, urban and agricultural ecology, responses to climate change, invasive species biology, technologies to track movement, avian disease, and the role of citizen scientists. There is also a greater focus on North American ornithology. Drawing extensively upon the wider scientific literature, this engaging text places the results of classical studies of avian biology alongside the most recent scientific breakthroughs. Useful case studies are presented in a concise and engaging style with the student reader foremost in mind. Key points are highlighted and suggestions for guided reading and key references are included throughout. Essential Ornithology is a companion textbook for advanced undergraduate and graduate students taking courses in avian science, as well as a useful reference for professional researchers and consultants. Book Synopsis Bird Habitats in Britain by : R. J. Fuller
Download or read book Bird Habitats in Britain written by R. J. Fuller and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Rob Fuller's book would not have been possible but for the nationwide cooperative endeavour by amateur and professional ornithologists, naturalists and conservationists which led to the British Trust for Ornithology's Register of Ornithological Sites, sponsored by the Nature Conservancy Council. Hitherto, few books have dealt primarily with bird habitats but the subject is of urgent importance now that exploitation of the environment has left few corners of Britain untouched or unthreatened. Even so, the book is much more than timely, it also extends the reader's interest to an area of bird study that has, perhaps, been too little considered. The book describes all the main habitat types, the structure and composition of bird communities, and reviews bird sites and their distribution throughout Britain. For the birdwatcher and all involved with conservation, this is stimulating reading and an essential reference. The text is supported by more than 100 diagrams and maps, and over 50 photographs; in addition there are 53 superbly evocative drawings by Donald Watson. Jacket illustrations by Donald Watson."--Bloomsbury Publishing.
