Book Synopsis Canada-United States Trade in Forest Products by : Russell S. Uhler
Download or read book Canada-United States Trade in Forest Products written by Russell S. Uhler and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2011-11-01 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book illuminates the major economic and political factors that have led to the development of a particular pattern of trade in forest products, and it examines and compares the legal structures within which this trade takes place. Standard economic and political methods of analysis are used to study the history of this trade, including such recent developments as the Free Trade Agreement. Several of the chapters focus on two recent trade disputes involving Canadian exports of shakes and shingles and of softwood lumber to the United States. These disputes are instructive for understanding not only the politics of trade but also important economic issues such as the measurement and impact of timber subsidies. In addition, the authors consider the factors affecting foreign market share, and the burden of tariffs and export taxes.

Book Synopsis Industrial Environmental Performance Metrics by : National Academy of Engineering and National Research Council
Download or read book Industrial Environmental Performance Metrics written by National Academy of Engineering and National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1999-08-24 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Industrial Environmental Performance Metrics is a corporate-focused analysis that brings clarity and practicality to the complex issues of environmental metrics in industry. The book examines the metrics implications to businesses as their responsibilities expand beyond the factory gateâ€"upstream to suppliers and downstream to products and services. It examines implications that arise from greater demand for comparability of metrics among businesses by the investment community and environmental interest groups. The controversy over what sustainable development means for businesses is also addressed. Industrial Environmental Performance Metrics identifies the most useful metrics based on case studies from four industriesâ€"automotive, chemical, electronics, and pulp and paperâ€"and includes specific corporate examples. It contains goals and recommendations for public and private sector players interested in encouraging the broader use of metrics to improve industrial environmental performance and those interested in addressing the tough issues of prioritization, weighting of metrics for meaningful comparability, and the longer term metrics needs presented by sustainable development.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Industrial policy is a vital and important field that contributes to decisions about public policy and business and is directly responsible for promoting growth and increasing competitiveness in local and global economies. Examining the most significant industrial policy issues in Canada, Industrial Organization in Canada presents contributions from the top Canadian researchers in this field, who survey both new directions in the field and areas that have been neglected but remain important. Using state-of-the-art empirical techniques, contributors address the policy challenges raised by globalization, the internet and other technological advances, innovation, and the rise of security measures in response to the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Chapters are organized around five themes: recent developments and policy challenges, Canadian firms in the information age, research and development and innovation, regulation and industrial performance, and securing trade and investment opportunities. The only substantive research volume on this subject in two decades, Industrial Organization in Canada is a welcome resource for policy makers, researchers, and academics concerned with industrial policy issues in contemporary Canada.

Book Synopsis Inter-regional Comparative Measures of Productivity in the Canadian Timber Harvesting Industry by : A. Ghebremichael
Download or read book Inter-regional Comparative Measures of Productivity in the Canadian Timber Harvesting Industry written by A. Ghebremichael and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The goal of this study is to conduct an in-depth comparative empirical study of productivity performance in the Canadian regional timber harvesting industries of British Columbia, Ontario, Quebec, and the rest of Canada. The methodology included analysis of trends in & cycles of prices, quantities, and cost & revenue shares; and generation & analysis of partial & total factor productivity (TFP) using multilateral index methods. A simple econometric model was employed to examine the extent that output & technological progress influence TFP. The results demonstrate which cost factors should be targeted for cost effectiveness & productivity improvements, test a hypothesis that TFP is a function of many variables, and reveal the need for various improvements in the forest sector.
