Book excerpt: This report describes the current state of U.S. physical education (PE) to help determine the mandate and availability of PE programs by state; PE teacher qualifications; curricular standards; class size; and accountability for student achievement. Information comes from surveys of PE directors/consultants in all 50 states and the District of Columbia (DC). Surveys requested information about the PE mandate, state standards, student assessment, substitutions for PE, time allocations, teacher licensing, and current concerns. Only two states do not have PE mandates, though in many states, the mandate requires only that PE be provided and local districts provide content and format guidelines. Only one state requires daily PE for all students. In most states, certified PE specialists are recommended, but classroom teachers teach elementary PE. In nearly 40 states, certified PE specialists are required to teach middle and high school PE. Only six states do not require continuing education to maintain teacher licensure. Only four states have or are developing PE content standards. Most states allow a PE teacher student ratio of 1:30. PE is being assessed by state approved assessment in five states and DC. Book excerpt: The purpose of this investigation was to determine, and then compare and contrast, the performance-based teaching behaviors of effective practitioners in three different environments: (a) general physical education (GPE) teachers who work with students without disabilities; (b) GPE teachers who work with students with disabilities in an integrated setting; and (c) adapted physical education (APE) teachers who work with students with disabilities in a segregated setting. A mixed methods design using both qualitative and quantitative methods with sequential procedures was used (Creswell, 2003). The sampling design was purposive. Participants (N = 10) were professors of master's degree programs in Adapted Physical Activity, Adapted Physical Education, and/or Special Physical Education. The questionnaire, Performance-based Teaching Behaviors of General and Adapted Physical Educators , consisted of informed consent information and a combination of close-ended (rating scale) and open-ended (comment) questions. Questions were developed using a three-phase approach: (a) an in-depth review and analysis of performance-based teaching behaviors listed in the literature, the National Standards for Beginning Physical Education Teachers (NASPE, 2003), the Standards for Advanced Programs in Physical Education Teacher Education (NASPE, 2001), and the Adapted Physical Education National Standards (Kelly, 2006); (b) information regarding performance-based teaching behaviors obtained from interviews; and (c) validity and reliability measures. Data were collected in summer of 2008. Participants were asked to rank the importance of each of the 145 teaching behaviors for each of the three physical education environments. Data were analyzed using descriptive and nonparametric statistics. Within the limitations of this study, both similarities and differences were identified in the teaching behaviors of effective physical educators who work with and without students with disabilities. Based on the results of this study, a number of teaching behaviors are necessary for effective physical education teachers in any setting and additional teaching behaviors are required for the effective teaching of students with disabilities in both general and adapted physical education.

Book excerpt: "The purpose of this study is to determine if the Class 'B' high school physical education classes in Washington State are in compliance with Title IX, which mandates that physical education classes be assigned on a coeducational basis. Also, an attempt was made to gauge the perceptions of the physical educators concerning coeducational physical education, and to determine if a difference existed between the male and female perceptions of coeducational physical education. A questionnaire was developed and sent to 50 randomly selected class 'B' high schools in Washington State. Along with finding the mean answer of each response, separate independent t tests were run on the data in an attempt to determine if there was any significant difference between the perceptions of the male and female physical education teachers. The data indicates that the only significant difference between the perceptions, was on hypothesis IV, which stated that there is no significant difference between male and female physical educator's perceptions of how a coeducational physical education setting enhances the female's performance level. The male respondents disagreed (71%) while the female respondents agreed (67%) that the female's performance level was enhanced by coeducational physical education. The data also shows that 59% of the respondents were in favor of returning to noncoeducational physical education"--Dcoument.

Book excerpt: A recent influx of Federal, State and Local agencies have developed agendas which focus on improving the status of teaching in America's schools. Much of the thrust of the agendas has focused on developing professional development programs for educators. Teachers' stages of development literature indicate that individual's professional development needs change over time and across contexts. In this light, one model of professional development will not meet the needs of all educators. Therefore, the primary purpose of this study was to describe the professional development opportunities of four experienced elementary physical educators and the extent to which these experiences informed the teaching-learning process. The secondary purpose of the study was to attain the experienced teachers' perspectives on the impact of individual professional development on student learning and thirdly to identify the constraints and supports for professional development opportunities. The qualitative data collection methods included: teacher interviews, observation of teaching, collected documents, and e-mail communication with the four participants. The quantitative data included participants' responses on the Teachers' Concerns Questionnaire-Physical Education (McBride, 1993) and on the Perceived Needs Questionnaire-Physical Education (Conkle, 1995). Data analysis procedures included questionnaire mean scores, constant comparative methods, and document analysis. Findings indicated that individual experiences and life cycles may have an effect on the concerns of teachers as well as the types of professional development pursue. Further, the school context and district support impacts the types of opportunities teachers explore. Specifically there is a lack of alignment between state and local professional development policies and the professional development needs of elementary physical educators. Many of the professional development "best practices" such as accommodating for individual differences, conducting development over a sustained period of time, and implementation of follow-up activities were not implemented in practice. Further, the topics of school building level professional development sessions were not relevant for the participants. Thus, mandated attendance at opportunities provided within the district did not meet the professional development needs of the participants. Few instances were found in which knowledge gained through professional development informed teaching practice. The participants described the development of a network of physical education peers who assisted with providing support and decreasing isolation.

They are the catalysts between students, parents, and teachers, that have the potential to greatly influence the culture and climate of their schools. As large influencers of the school, their perceptions towards physical education (PE) can have a great impact on PE teachers and the PE curriculum itself. Using the Occupational Socialization Theory, this study aims to understand how administrators’ prior socialization experiences impact their current perceptions towards PE. The purpose of this study is to investigate administrators’ perception on PE and how they use these perceptions to combat marginalization. A qualitative case study was used to obtain an understanding of how five participants’ childhood and professional experiences impact their perception and action towards PE. Data was collected through a questionnaire, autobiography, and three rounds of interviews. The data was examined with a collaborate qualitative analysis approach. The findings from the study were described thematically and results were categorized into three main themes: the power of memory: (a) the impact of positive experiences during childhood PE and physical activity, (b) disservice to PE: lack of administrative preparation, and (c) PE was valued despite marginalization witnessed. Within the first theme there were three subthemes: (a) experiences within administrators’ own K-12 PE and physical activity, (b) involvement of sport and athletics helped develop a strong appreciation for physical activity, and (c) community, family, and friends impacted positive perceptions of PE and physical activity throughout childhood. The second main theme was comprised of two subthemes: (a) preparation into administrative roles was deficit in preparing them to support PE and (b) administrators established a culture and provided advocacy for PE teachers to overcome marginal status. The results suggest that administrators’ positive childhood experiences in PE were derived from a collection of experiences related to PE and events organized by the PE teacher. Despite the lack of training to supervise or support PE during the professional or training phase of their life, the appreciation that was developed throughout childhood, make them advocates for PE in their current schools and communities
