This thesis seeks to expand upon this well known notion and use it as part of an empirical analysis of the determinants of local demand for NBA franchises. This paper starts by focusing on the traditional notion of competitive balance, with specific regard to the sport basketball and the National Basketball Association specifically. It then quantifies the degree of competitive balance in the NBA since 1990 using metrics similar to those used by Quirk and Fort in their 1992 book Pay Dirt: The Business of Professional Team Sports. An extensive amount of linear regression analysis is then conducted, first looking at all teams and then teams belonging to certain market types. The empirical results indicate that competitive balance is not a significant determinant of local demand. The results also indicate key differences in the determinants between low-income market teams and high-income market teams. I make two recommendations as to how the NBA could beneficially alter its business model based upon these regression results: abolishing guaranteed contracts and changing the 100/0 home/away gate split.

Book excerpt: The owners of professional basketball teams in the National Basketball Association (NBA) and the American Basketball Association (ABA) wanted to merge the 2 leagues because a war between them over players had led to escalating salaries. The National Basketball Players Association (NBPA) responded with a lawsuit to block the merger citing antitrust regulations. When the owners went to Congress to ask for a special antitrust exemption, they were denied. This case study discusses the impact of communication on legislative lobbying, specifically how the NBPA used direct and indirect lobbying techniques to block the first NBA-ABA merger attempt. This case study offers a means to understand how and why some entities succeed in their public debates, while others fail. For the scholar, this case study adds to the limited literature on legislative lobbying from a communication perspective. For the practitioner, this study provides some guidelines for the effective use of lobbying.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine the relative effects of selected marketing techniques on the attendance of minor professional hockey teams during two stages of a playing season. Twenty-six marketing techniques comprised a questionnaire using a 5-point Likert scale to describe the degree of relative importance each marketing technique had on attendance from the view of the population of 28 marketing directors in the American (AHL) and International (IHL) Hockey Leagues. It was hypothesized that no differences would exist in marketing techniques between high and low attendance teams during two stages of the playing season, and that no differences would exist in marketing techniques between winning and losing teams during two stages of the season. Descriptive statistics were used to determine general trends in the data and independent samples t-tests were used to test for significant differences. The response rate was 93% and significant differences resulted. Marketing techniques generating differences for high and low attendance teams were media relations, and ticket options and incentives during the first half of the season. Winning and losing teams differed significantly for media sponsorships during the first half of the season, and for ticket options and incentives, and signage during the second half. This study provided information regarding the marketing environment and the marketing activities of minor professional hockey teams and indicated a further need to study marketing techniques used in different sports.
