Book excerpt: The elderly population in our society is increasing both in number and proportion, with the life expectancy of women increasing more than men. Their needs have been given increased attention in recent years. Many studies have been done on clothing for older women, but few have dealt with the older woman's clothing practices for specific occasions and whether these practices have changed since she was middle-aged. The major purposes of this study were to determine the types of clothing women 65-74, 75-84, and 85 and over wear for specific occasions compared to the types of clothing they wore when they were in their 40's; and to investigate the relationship of the older woman's present clothing behavior to: perception of self as young, middle-aged or elderly; occupation prior to retirement; marital status; education; degree of social participation; and sex-role concept. In addition, the investigator was interested in finding out if the elderly woman was wearing bifurcated garments, and whether certain physical characteristics were affecting her clothing choices. The sample was randomly selected from Benton County voter registration files and included a total of 102 women age 65-74, 75-84, and 85 and over. Information gathered from interviewing the subjects in their homes was recorded on data collection sheets, scored, coded, and then keypunched on cards to facilitate statistical analysis. The McNemar test for the significance of change was used to determine if there was a significant change in the clothing behavior of women 65-74, 75-84, and 85 and over. A chi-square test was used to investigate relationships between the present clothing behavior of women 65 and over and perception of self, occupation when 55-64, marital status, education, degree of social participation, and sex-role concept. A chisquare test was also used to compare education and sex-role concept. A significance level of .05 was selected for all statistical tests. The proportion of older women in Benton County represented in this study was 65-74 (3%), 75-84 (5%), and 85 and over (16%). The majority of the women perceived themselves as middle-aged, lived in a city (25,000-99,000), were widowed, and had a higher education level than the average in Oregon. It was found that 80.4% of the sample wear bifurcated garments. For each age group, the percentage wearing them was 94.1% (age 66-74), 88.2% (age 75-84), and 58.8% (age 85+). In addition, arthritis was the most frequently mentioned physical problem, and the preferred clothing characteristic for those who have physical problems is a garment with a front opening. There were many significant changes in the clothing behavior of older women from when they were in their 40's to the present. There were 30 significant changes for women 65-74, 22 for women 75-84, and 16 for women 85 and over. A total of 68 significant changes was found in 240 statistical tests, which was high considering that statistical tests were run for every occasion and category of dress even though some categories of dress did not fit the occasion (e.g., bathrobe for church). Inmost instances of significant change, women decreased the frequency with which they were wearing dresses or suits, and increased their frequency of wearing bifurcated garments. There was little relationship found between the present clothing behavior of women 65 and over and: perception of self as young, middleaged, or elderly; occupation at age 55-64; marital status; educational level; level of social participation; and sex-role concept.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine whether women aged 65 and older are wearing sweatshirts and sweatpants for activewear, and, if so, to investigate the types of activities they are worn for, reasons for wearing, feature preferences, and fitting problems. While sweatshirts and sweatpants have been popularly worn by younger generations, there is little published research on their wear by the elderly. A convenience sample of 222 female members aged 65 and older taken from 34 Family and Community Education (FCE) extension study groups within four counties in the Willamette Valley of western Oregon was used in the research. A questionnaire-survey was administered at FCE meetings to provide quantitative and qualitative data. Eighty-three percent or 185 participants affirmatively answered to wearing either sweatshirts, sweatpants, or both garments of sweats attire. The largest percentage of respondents (43%) reported they "Usually wear sweatshirts and sometimes wear sweatpants". Activities with the highest frequency cited by respondents for wearing sweats attire included (in descending order): (a) exercise, (b) home-based indoor activities and situations, and (c) outdoor activities and situations. During the winter, 79% of the participants wore sweats attire frequently (a minimum of 2-3 times per week). Extremely important reasons cited for wearing sweats attire were "Warmth" and "Easy to care for or launder". The most highly desired features in sweats attire included: pullover sweatshirts with raglan sleeves, sweatpants with an elastic waistband and pockets, medium thick/medium weight, cotton/manufactured fiber blends, fleece interior, and muted colors that hide soil. Clothing size was more frequently related to these preferences than health status or age. Excess lengths of sleeves and pant legs, and tight, high necklines were the most frequent fitting problems cited. ANOVA and Newman-Keuls Multiple Comparison Procedure were used to analyze relationships. Poor health status and increased fitting problems showed a statistically significant relationship at p≤.01. Sweats attire provoked either very positive or very negative written comments. Non-wearing participants reacted negatively to the appearance and warmth of sweats attire, whereas, wearing-participants reacted strongly to benefits of comfort and warmth. Practical for lifestyle and easy manageability when dressing and undressing were also high considerations for positive respondents. Additional uses cited by respondents for sweats attire included sleepwear. The findings imply that sweats attire is frequently worn by active, older Oregon women for casual, familiar activities, situations, and environments. Also implied is the need for manufacturers and retailers to recognize the diversity of this heterogeneous population. Stereotypical images and clothing styles can be challenged to address the elderly population's needs for clothing comfort and current style, while offering functionality with such special features as extra pockets; shorter lengths with adequate torso ease; wider, lower necklines for postural changes; light weight fabrics with warmth; and easy-care finishes.

The purpose of Study One was to determine the effects of a leisure education program on leisure participation in new, current, and re-engaged activities among older adults living alone in the community and receiving home care services. A single subject research design combining elements from the multiple probe and alternating treatments designs across subjects (ABC) was used in this study. Effects were assessed by introducing the leisure education intervention across subjects at different times. One subject received a one-hour leisure education program once a week (ten sessions over a period of 11 weeks). The second subject also received a one-hour leisure education program once a week (eight sessions over a period of ten weeks). Of the remaining two subjects in this study, one withdrew and another was eliminated, rendering it difficult to reliably and validly interpret the results. Study Two was conducted following the withdrawal of two subjects. The purpose of study two was to identify issues related to leisure participation in the homes and communities of five older adult women. (Abstract shortened by UMI.).

At least 17.7 million individuals in the United States are caregivers of an older adult with a health or functional limitation. The nation's family caregivers provide the lion's share of long-term care for our older adult population. They are also central to older adults' access to and receipt of health care and community-based social services. Yet the need to recognize and support caregivers is among the least appreciated challenges facing the aging U.S. population. Families Caring for an Aging America examines the prevalence and nature of family caregiving of older adults and the available evidence on the effectiveness of programs, supports, and other interventions designed to support family caregivers. This report also assesses and recommends policies to address the needs of family caregivers and to minimize the barriers that they encounter in trying to meet the needs of older adults.

Book excerpt: "The purpose of this cross-sectional study was to examine selected health outcomes in women aged 55 years and older during retirement and to determine whether a relationship exists between women's health outcomes and aspects of retirement, including status (part or full-time retirement), type (voluntary or forced retirement), and timing (early-prior to age 65-or on-time). This study was guided by the Roy's Adaptation Model, with health viewed as adaptations to the focal stimulus of retirement within the model's four adaptive modes: physiological, self-concept, role function, and interdependence. Eighty women aged 55 years and older who were retired at least part-time from working outside the home were recruited using convenience sampling from senior and community settings within five southeastern US states (North Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Arkansas, and Louisiana). The average age of participants was 66 years. The average retirement age was 62 years. The majority of women were white, married, non-caregivers, and resided in rural areas. Health outcomes and health conditions were collected using self-report questionnaires by participants. Health outcomes included physical function, self-assessed health, functionality, and social support. Health conditions included chronic conditions such as diabetes, chronic heart disease, and memory impairment. Differences in the proportion of women grouped by retirement type, timing, or status were examined for measures in each of the four adaptation modes. Retirement group differences were compared using one-way ANOVA and Chi-square tests. Women's retirement experiences were explored using open-ended questions. This study generated new knowledge regarding how retirement status, type, and timing relate to essential health outcomes for the fast-growing population of women retirees in the United States. Type of retirement was found to be significantly associated with variables representing all four RAM adaptive modes, with forced retirement showing poorer health outcomes compared to voluntary retirement. Retirement type may have important implications in multiple health-related aspects of what is often a lengthy two-decade retirement period for women. A greater proportion of forced retirees reported diabetes, stroke, and memory loss compared to voluntary retirees in this study. This is significant due to connections previously described in the literature between these health conditions. Forced retirement type was related to lower self-rated health, lower functionality, less participation in volunteer activities, and less emotional support from others. Women of minority race/ethnicity in this study were more likely to have forced retirements than white women. Forced retirement can create an economically-challenging situation that impacts health through a myriad of pathways including lowering self-esteem, decreasing quality of life, and decreasing health-seeking behaviors. The ability to better predict and address health changes in older women will aid in preserving their safety and independence and help offer the best quality of life for as long as possible. This new knowledge reveals useful information for clinicians and has important implications that may lead to early interventions for this population to improve health outcomes during retirement. In addition, labor or corporate employers should consider strategies that include greater job flexibility options to increase employee retention and re-evaluate current policies when planning women's retirement."--Abstract from author supplied metadata.
