Book excerpt: The purpose of this quasi-experimental study was to compare the effects of literature instruction using traditional methods to literature instruction using Reading Apprenticeship (RA) to determine if outcomes of attitude and achievement of students enrolled in World Literature courses are changed. Participants included 104 students from 1 junior college in a southeastern state. Of these 104 students, 68 were taught using a traditional method of instruction, and 36 were taught using the RA method of instruction. Students were administered the Rhody Secondary Reading Attitude Survey to determine attitude scores at the beginning of the semester and attitude scores at the end of the semester. In addition, the Accuplacer-Reading Comprehension Test was administered to assess students' reading achievement at both the beginning of the semester and at the end of the semester. To analyze the data, a repeated-measures MANOVA was used to determine if statistically significant differences were present in students' attitudes and achievement scores based on instruction type. Also, the repeated measures MANOVA was used to determine if there was an interaction between attitude and achievement scores. After analyzing the data that was collected, the results indicated a statistically significant difference between the attitude scores of students taught literature using traditional instruction and students taught literature using RA instruction. The attitudes of students who were taught World Literature through traditional instructional methods experienced little change, and the attitudes of students who were taught World Literature using the RA method significantly increased. The results of the achievement tests and the interaction were not statistically significant.

Book excerpt: This qualitative study examined the impact of the Reading Apprenticeship framework on teachers' instructional practices and classroom environments. Moreover, it examined how the instructional deliveries and classroom environments of teachers trained in the Reading Apprenticeship concepts compared to those who do not have a working knowledge of the framework. To complement the study, an overview of The Reading Apprenticeship framework developed by the Strategic Literacy Initiative at WestEd was presented along with current and seminal research that reinforces its theoretical underpinnings and practical applications. Other comparable intervention programs are summarized to present an overview of common strategies and practices that characterize adolescent literacy models. The study was conducted in a suburban high school with an enrollment of approximately 1241 students and it used two groups of teachers and two groups of students as participants. The research employed questionnaires and focus group interviews, and the data generated from these instruments showed that the Reading Apprenticeship had a positive effect on the instructional practices and classroom environments of the teachers who had received training in the framework. For instance, teachers who were trained in the framework engaged their students in metacognitive and process-based learning, collaborative learning, and the learning of reading strategies within the context of the content more so than their colleagues. These trained teachers' classroom environments were also more consciously structured and placed a greater emphasis on safety and flexibility.

Book excerpt: Many high-school students lack the specific subject matter knowledge, vocabulary, and reading strategies they need to learn from complex texts. Secondary teachers need professional development to improve content literacy instruction. This qualitative case study explored the impact of the Reading Apprenticeship Improving Secondary Education (RAISE) on three teachers and their students over an eight-month period. The teachers in this study attended RAISE workshops and received in-school coaching designed to help them recognize their own subject matter expertise and to apprentice students into the discourse and practices of historians through metacognitive inquiry. The teachers also learned how to support students in building identities as readers who could solve reading problems and persevere in learning from complex texts. The study was conducted at two Midwestern high schools, one rural and one urban. AP World History and U. S. History classes were the focus of the study. Analysis consisted of multiple cycles of coding that surfaced themes; these themes provided scaffolding for the analysis of the narrative responses of the participants and guided the selection of representative examples from transcripts. In the final analysis, the teachers demonstrated instructional efficacy and supported students in developing agency for reading complex history texts. The Reading Apprenticeship model was effective as an instructional innovation and transformational professional development option for school districts.

Book excerpt: The impetus of this study was to explore the perceptions of teachers and students from a suburban school district in southeastern Pennsylvania and the effect of Reading Apprenticeship Framework (RAF) on instructional practices in high school. The study was limited to the perceptions of high school teachers providing reading instruction in the curriculum areas of English, Social Studies, World Language, and Health and Physical Education; specifically, the negative and positive impact of using the RAF. The study involved examining teachers' delivery of content as they used RAF strategies in the classroom. Finally, this study considered the perceptions of students in grades 11 and 12 participating in Reading Apprenticeship Framework classrooms, specifically, the students' personal perceptions of reading within the content areas in high school. The results of the study indicated that both teachers and students believed that RAF is a framework that supports student reading achievement and teacher instructional practices within high courses. The incorporation of RAF increased teacher understanding of student learning and finally, student motivation was also increased.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Purpose, scope, and method of study. This study compared reading achievement between two groups of students in Christian schools: one used a phonics approach, while the other used a balanced approach to teach reading to fourth-grade students. The difference of the means of the spring 2002 SAT reading comprehension scores and the spring 2003 SAT reading comprehension scores of the students in the two groups were compared. Scaled scores were used because the scaled score enables one to compare students' test scores with those of other students and evaluate changes in student performance across subtests and testing occasions. School administrators provided data from spring 2002 SAT scores and spring 2003 SAT scores for each student. The students were divided into four different levels based on their spring 2002 SAT scaled score. The data was analyzed by a factorial ANOVA. The independent variables were the method of instruction and the scaled score level of the students, while the dependent variable was the change in the students' scores from pretest to posttest. Findings and conclusions. The findings indicated that there was no significant difference between the two groups (phonics approach and balanced approach). Thus, the hypothesis of this study was rejected. Teaching methodology had no significant effect on reading comprehension achievement for this study. A significant main effect for Level was found. Students (in both groups) that started fourth grade at the lowest level showed a significant increase in scaled score on reading comprehension by the end of fourth grade when compared against the other three reading performance levels."--Abstract.
