Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to compare the effectiveness of two free throw shooting methods, the Ed Palubinskas Method (PM) and the Free Shoot Method (FSM), and their ability to improve free throw shooting accuracy. The experimental group, using the PM, and the control group, using the FSM, shot the same amount of free throws over a 13 week period. Subjects were 33 male intermediate basketball students at Brigham Young University. Subjects in both groups shot 26 free throws twice a week. Subjects were tested once every other week by shooting and recording the amount made out of nine attempts. There was no significant improvement for trials for both groups over the 13 weeks (F=1.583, p=.154). There was also no significant difference between groups (F=.445, p=.510) nor any interaction between groups (F=.642, p=.696). There was no significant difference in free throw shooting accuracy between the PM and FSM for the selected groups.

Book excerpt: "The significance of this study was to determine if using a big ball basketball during practice will increase free throw shooting percentage in high school male athletes. The big ball was designed to improve shooting accuracy of basketball players by: 1) increasing the tracking of the ball, 2) increasing the arch on the free throw shot, 3) forcing subjects to spread hand on the back of the ball. The subjects were eighteen boy's varsity and junior varsity basketball players from Sultan High School. The study took place during the 1999-2000 high school boy's basketball season. Subjects practiced for two and a half hours, six days a week throughout the season. The season lasted from November until February. The study involved a pre-test at the beginning of the season and a post test at the end of the season. The results of the test were factored using a two way ANOVA to determine significance. There was also a paired t-test between control and experimental groups. This study found that both control and experimental groups had improved their shooting percentages from pre-test to post-test. There was no difference between experimental and control group to support the effect of increased shooting percentage due to the big ball basketball"--Document.

Book excerpt: Fifth and sixth grade boys (N = 38) participated in the free throw study to examine the effects of massed and distributed practice during a 10-session experimental program. Ss were randomly assigned to two groups: a massed practice group (n = 19), and a distributed practice group (n = 19). Each S in the massed practice group practiced 20 consecutive free throws during each session. Each S in the distributed practice group practiced 20 free throws, attempted two free throws then waited until every other subject in his sub-group had attempted two free throws before taking his next turn. An ANCOVA produced P> .05 between the massed practice free throw shooting method and the distributed practice free throw shooting method. Results of using the adjusted mean scores indicated that the massed practice group showed the greater increase in improvement over the distributed practice group.

Book excerpt: Many researchers have confirmed that students with disabilities engage in significantly less physical activity than their nondisabled peers in physical education class. One of the elements that influences student participation in physical education class is attitude and there is a gap in the literature with respect to investigating the attitudes of students with learning disabilities, emotional/behavioral disabilities, or attention difficulties. There is limited research on how teachers perceive and assist students to participate in physical education. This dissertation is looking specifically at enjoyment and useful attitudes of physical activity in physical education class for students with learning disabilities.

Book excerpt: In this fifth edition of A Cognitive Psychology of Mass Communication, author Richard Jackson Harris continues his examination of how our experiences with media affect the way we acquire knowledge about the world, and how this knowledge influences our attitudes and behavior. Presenting theories from psychology and communication along with reviews of the corresponding research, this text covers a wide variety of media and media issues, ranging from the commonly discussed topics – sex, violence, advertising – to lesser-studied topics, such as values, sports, and entertainment education. The fifth and fully updated edition offers: highly accessible and engaging writing contemporary references to all types of media familiar to students substantial discussion of theories and research, including interpretations of original research studies a balanced approach to covering the breadth and depth of the subject discussion of work from both psychology and media disciplines. The text is appropriate for Media Effects, Media & Society, and Psychology of Mass Media coursework, as it examines the effects of mass media on human cognitions, attitudes, and behaviors through empirical social science research; teaches students how to examine and evaluate mediated messages; and includes mass communication research, theory and analysis.
