Book excerpt: Abstract: Shoulder rehabilitation incorporates strengthening, flexibility and functional exercises into a therapy program. Multiple methods are used in strengthening the shoulder. Two common strengthening tools utilized in shoulder rehabilitation are free weights and Theraband. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of a training protocol using either Theraband or free weights on shoulder external rotation strength. Subjects consisted of 29 healthy, female Springfield College students (x age = 19.83 ± 1.56 yr; x height 162.98 ± 6.78 cm; x weight 68.25 ±18.78 kg). Subjects were randomly assigned to one of 3 groups; experimental group A which trained with Theraband, experimental group B which trained with free weights, and control group C which did not train. Subjects in the two experimental groups performed 3 sets of 6 repetitions of prone external rotation exercise with the right arm positioned in the plane of the scapula. Subjects trained 3 times a week for 4 weeks. Strength was measured using a six repetition maximum (6RM) at pretraining, midpoint, and posttraining for both free weights and Theraband for subjects in all 3 groups. A repeated measures analysis of variance (ANOVA) for free weight 6RM and Theraband 6RM revealed similarly significant (P

Strength Band Training shows you how to maximize strength, speed, and flexibility in the gym, at home, or on the road. With more than 160 exercises and predesigned workouts for fitness and sport-specific training, you will discover why strength bands are the ultimate tool for targeting, isolating, rehabilitating, and developing every major muscle group. The third edition includes a strength assessment index to measure progress, new chapters addressing training for older adults and rehabilitation, training tips connecting research to specific exercises, and injury prevention guidelines throughout. The book is organized to group exercises by upper and lower body strengthening, joint and muscle isolation, core stability, flexibility, and total body fitness. The full-color photos throughout the book showcase both flat bands and tubing. The elastic resistance exercises allow you to add resistance in multiple directions—something free weights and machines cannot do—for resistance routines that can simulate sport-specific demands, strengthen your core, or help you prevent or recover from common injuries. The book has a total of 27 different programs designed for optimal fitness, team sport training, individual sport training, or rehabilitation. Portable and easy to adjust, strength bands provide resistance for any level of strength, fitness, or ability. If you’re an athlete, fitness enthusiast, older adult, or someone recovering from injury, you will find the exercises and programs you need to improve strength, shape your physique, and regain movement. This book was released on 2017 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introduction and objective Machines and free weights are two forms of external resistance which are used in todays training programs. Free weights have higher stability requirements compared to machines which follow a fixed path and require less effort of the stabilizing muscles (Schwanbeck, 2009) (Willoughby DS, 1990).The purpose of this study is to examine the difference in progression in strength and postural control in a resistance training program specifically for the shoulder region between these two forms of external resistance. Participants were randomly assigned to three groups, one training with free weights, one with machines and one where the participants trained with machines the first 5 weeks and switched to free weights after the intermediate evaluation. There will be referred to this group as the switch group. The first research question is whether there is a difference in progression in strength and postural control. Secondly, the purpose is to examine the effect on progression in strength and postural control when making a transition from machines to free weights. Methods To this end, the three groups were tested pre, intermediate and after the training program. To evaluate progression in strength and postural control, 1RM-testing and the FMS test battery was used. Circumference measurements were measured according ISAK guidelines. Results Results indicate a significant progression in strength in every group and for all the exercises (p0,028). For body weight, circumference measurements and relevant FMS-tests there was not always a significant difference within groups (p>0,05) although relevant circumferences for the shoulder all increased significantly (p0,045) along with the overall FMS-score (p0,002). No significant differences (p>0,05) were found between the 3 groups. Conclusion All 3 groups made a significant improvement in 1RM-tests, implying that when using free weights, machines or a combination of the two, there is a significant rise in strength. Circumference measurements concerning the shoulder region all increased significantly along with the overall FMS-score which could point to an improvement of the dynamic stability. The switch group which trained with machines the 5 first weeks and switched to free weights after the intermediate evaluation showed similar progression in strength and postural control compared to the other groups.

Book excerpt: Progressive overload through the range of motion (ROM) is important for proper rehabilitation of muscle strength, yet varies across types of resistance for a given exercise. The purpose of this study was to compare strength curves (SC) for shoulder internal (IR) and external rotation (ER) with resistance curves (RC) for two application angles (A and B) of Thera-Band resistance to determine which application angle best overloads IR and ER through the ROM. Thirty volunteer subjects participated in this study. SCs were obtained experimentally by measuring maximal isometric torque for IR and ER from 30 ̊to 135.̊ RCs were calculated using regression equations from the literature. Significant differences (p

This book was released on 2017 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Objectives: To investigate the differences between strength training with machines and free weights and the transition from machines to free weights on progression and postural control. This study was specified on the effects on m. hamstrings. Method: Thirty healthy, male participants (26,4 ± 8,4 years, 180,4 ± 7,2 cm, 79,3 ± 10,2 kg, 2340,9 ± 1444 MET min/week) between 19 and 44 years old, who didn't perform strength training in the past 12 months before the start of the study, were included. Antropometric measures, 1RM-test leg curl, 1 RM-test stiff-legged deadlift, standing broad jump (SBJ) and Functional Movement Screen (FMS) were tested before, after 5 weeks and after 10 weeks of training. The participants were randomly divided into group 1 (G1): 5 weeks machines followed by 5 weeks free weights, group 2 (G2): 10 weeks machines and group 3 (G3): 10 weeks free weigths. The participants trained 2 times a week. Mann-Whitney U Tests, Friedman tests en Wilcoxon Rank Tests with Bonferroni correction were executed during the statistic analysis. Results: Thigh circumference was in G1 significant smaller than in G2 and G3 at pre-test. G1 scored at mid-test significantly worse on SBJ compared with G3. Each group progressed significantly during the period of training for 1RM-tests leg curl and stiff-legged deadlift, SBJ and FMS-total score. Thigh circumference improved significantly only in G1 en G3. Only G2 improved significantly at inline lunge. Conclusion: Few differences were found between the groups for antropometric measures, SBJ, FMS and 1RM-tests. This means that type of weight training is not important. Studies with more participants in each group who investigate the differences between these forms of strength training on progression and postural control for a longer period of time, are necessary.
