Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two experiments tested human subjects under whole-body vertical vibration to (1) compare effects on performance of 5 cps sinusoidal, 5 cps random amplitude, and 4-12 cps random vibration equated on the basis of power, and (2) determine acceleration levels at which significant performance decrements are found for each type of vibration. The complex experimental task required two-dimensional compensatory tracking, visual monitoring, and auditory monitoring during 20-minute vibration exposures at levels equated to 5, 15, 25, and 30 percent of the 1-minute human tolerance values for 5 cps sinusoidal vibration. Performance decrements under vibration were restricted to tracking, the most demanding component of the task complex. Tracking performance deteriorated with increasing acceleration levels of each type of vibration. Overall performance differences associated with the different types of vibration equated on the basis of power were not significant. A number of task and procedural variables, including task difficulty, work-rest cycle, and prior experience appear to be important determinants of performance capabilities and fatigue effects found in vibration studies, indicating a need for further investigation of these variables. Book excerpt: A bibliography compiled from a number of disciplines which bear on the problem of motion and its effects on human performance is presented. Psychophysiological reports in the area of spatial orientation, perception, and receptor mechanisms provide background on the human organism in relation to motion stimuli. The effects of aerospace vehicle motion are represented by a compilation of studies of performance under acceleration, vibration and buffeting, tumbling, and weightlessness. Reports on training and motion simulation, equipment and methodology, and general anlyses of the whole problem area are presented. (Author).

Book excerpt: This compendium, written by active researchers in the field, encompasses topics ranging from anatomical and physiological subjects, through analyses of stimulus characteristics, prediction of sickness, and consideration of human factors, to pharmacological and behavioral therapeutic measures for terrestrial as well as microgravity travelers. Material often found scattered in diverse journals, paper-bound proceedings of symposia, difficult-to-find laboratory reports, or included with other topics in collections having a diffuse focus, are presented here in one volume dedicated to a single theme. The critical up-to-date- reviews are a first source for researchers and research program managers as well as an essential information source for engineers and practitioners.

This volume summarizes the current understanding of the many human responses to vibration.Divided into two parts, this book deals with whole-body vibrations and hand-transmitted vibration. In each part the experimental data and appropriate models are presented in detail so that readers can address practical problems. An extensive guide to national and international standards is provided, and a large multidisciplinary glossary of terms assists in understanding the relevant technical and medical jargon. This comprehensive reference volume is accessible to all those interested in human vibration: medical doctors, engineers, lawyers, scientists, and health and safety officials and administrators.LK uses the following bulleted list_This new text features:An up-to-date statement of current knowledge on human responses to vibrationA comprehensive glossary of terms in current use in the fields of vibration and human responseAn extensive bibliography and guide to national and international standards
