Book excerpt: The collision and subsequent interaction of counter-streaming plasmas occurs in several areas of laser-plasma research including double foil targets for x-ray lasers and the plasma blow-off inside ICF hohlraums. Because a single fluid model allows for only one value of the flow velocity at any one spatial location, interpenetration of the plamas is not allowed resulting in immediate stagnation with complete conversion of the ion-streaming kinetic energy to thermal energy. Multifluid models have been developed which employ multiple ion fluid species that interact through the self-consistent electrostatic field and collisional coupling. Because they are approximations to a kinetic situation, the form of these coupling coefficients is not unique, with various workers using differing approximations. More recently, Larroche has implemented a finite difference approach to the ion Fokker-Planck equation while Jones and co-workers have performed two-dimensional simulations of colliding plasmas using a particle-in-cell code with a new collisional model. Our kinetic modeling also makes use of particle in cell (PIC) techniques with Monte Carlo (MC) particle-particle collisions algorithm that is equivalent to the Fokker-Planck collision operator. We have made direct comparison of this MC-PIC model to multifluid simulations on both simple slowing-down and equilibration problems as well as problems characteristic of laser generated colliding plasmas. These comparisons have established the validity of the multifluid model as well as aided in the development of the kinetic capability for more challenging geometries.

Book excerpt: Laser-driven "inverted corona" fusion targets have attracted interest as a low-convergence neutron source and as a platform for studying kinetic physics in inertially confined plasmas. These targets consist of a fuel layer lined along the interior surface of a hollow or gas-filled plastic hohlraum. The plasma streams generated in vacuum targets are initially nearly collisionless as they converge, leading to wide interaction length scales and long interaction time scales as the jets interpenetrate. With the inclusion of a low-density gas fill, ejected particles from the shell can pass far into the gas before colliding, leading to significant mixing across the gas-shell interface. Such interactions are difficult to accurately model using standard hydrodynamic simulations, which assume high collisionality. In this work we model the system using a kinetic-ion, fluid-electron hybrid particle-in-cell (PIC) approach. We also demonstrate the potential of the hybrid-PIC approach for full-scale modeling and experimental design. The entire system is modeled in one integrated simulation, including laser energy deposition, hydrodynamic/kinetic evolution of the plasma, and fusion dynamics. Simulations demonstrate significant kinetic effects (interpenetration, beam-beam fusion, and weakly collisional electrostatic shocks) that are mediated by collisional processes and can be tuned by changing the initial fill pressure of the gas. These effects are detectable through neutron diagnostics. Using two-dimensional simulations we also investigate compression symmetry, hotspot velocity, and directional differences in neutron spectra, as well as make comparison with x-ray emission images. Predictions of neutron yield scaling vs. gas pressure show excellent agreement with experimental data recorded at the OMEGA laser facility, suggesting that one-dimensional kinetic mechanisms may be sufficient to capture the mix process.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an overview of the basic concepts and new methods in the emerging scientific area known as quantum plasmas. In the near future, quantum effects in plasmas will be unavoidable, particularly in high density scenarios such as those in the next-generation intense laser-solid density plasma experiment or in compact astrophysics objects. Currently, plasmas are in the forefront of many intriguing questions around the transition from microscopic to macroscopic modeling of charged particle systems. Quantum Plasmas: an Hydrodynamic Approach is devoted to the quantum hydrodynamic model paradigm, which, unlike straight quantum kinetic theory, is much more amenable to investigate the nonlinear realm of quantum plasmas. The reader will have a step-by-step construction of the quantum hydrodynamic method applied to plasmas. The book is intended for specialists in classical plasma physics interested in methods of quantum plasma theory, as well as scientists interested in common aspects of two major areas of knowledge: plasma and quantum theory. In these chapters, the quantum hydrodynamic model for plasmas, which has continuously evolved over the past decade, will be summarized to include both the development and applications of the method.
