Book excerpt: Demineralization of enamel has been one of the iatrogenic effects of fixed orthodontic therapy, for which various authors have suggested the use of fluoride to reduce the decalcification and development of white spot lesion. In the present study, the shear bond strength of light-cure composite adhesive, self-cure composite adhesive, light-cure glass ionomer cement and acidic primer were tested at the end of 24 hours after bonding. The results proved that the acidic primer system had highest shear bond strength while Light-cure glass ionomer system had the least shear bond strength. But the mean values met the minimal shear bond strength required for orthodontic bonding. After bond failure, least amount of glass ionomer cement was present on the enamel surface, followed by acidic primer system, light-cure composite and self-cure composite system. So, it is advantageous to use light-cure glass ionomer cement for bonding in terms of less amount of time spent and no enamel damage during cleaning procedure after debonding.
Book Synopsis Shear Bond Strength of Brackets Adhered to Laser-Etch Versus Acid-Etch by : Hakam Alfaqheri
Download or read book Shear Bond Strength of Brackets Adhered to Laser-Etch Versus Acid-Etch written by Hakam Alfaqheri and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2011-10 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many studies have been done on the shear bond strength of brackets adhered to acid-etched enamel and so far, there is no study on shear bond strength of brackets adhere to laser-etched enamel in Iraq. So, this study is an attempt to compare the shear bond strength of brackets adhered to laser-etched enamel with that of brackets adhered to acid-etched enamel. The application of laser irradiation to etch dental enamel for direct bonding of orthodontic appliance has been studied. CO2 (Carbon Dioxide) laser are capable of producing surface irregularities in human enamel which resemble those resulting from etching of enamel with ortho-phosphoric acid. Whether laser conditioning improves the retention of composite resins to the same degree as conventional acid-etching techniques has been the subject of several investigations.

Book Synopsis Self-Etching Primers and Shear Bond Strength of Orthodontic Brackets by : Amit Goyal

This book was released on 2011-12 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Self-etching primers are the latest addition to the armamentarium of an orthodontist. Their main advantage is that they reduce the number of steps required in the bonding of orthodontic brackets. However, their low ph was a cause of concern. This book describes a study undertaken to see the effects of ph of self-etchant on shear bond strength of orthodontic brackets. These shear bond strengths were also compared to those obtained with a conventional 3-step bonding system. It was found that self-etching primers not only reduce the chair time in an orthodontist's clinic but also reduce the amount of enamel lost during etching. The bond strength achieved was less than that of the conventional bonding system but was acceptable for orthodontic purposes. Thus self-etching primers are an important and useful invention for simplifying the most critical step in orthodontic clinic- bonding.
Book Synopsis Effect of Phosphoric Acid Etching Prior to Application of Self-etching Primer (SEP) on Shear Bond Strenght by : Grace Shao-Chiu Chen

This book was released on 2010 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: INTRODUCTION: The objective of this study was to determine the effect of phosphoric acid etching prior to application of self-etching primer on orthodontic bonding in terms of shear bond strength and the adhesive remnant on the enamel surface at debonding. METHODS: Fifty-one extracted human premolars were pumiced, rinsed, dried, and then subjected to three different treatments: Group 1: no phosphoric acid etching + Transbond Plus SEP; Group 2: 15-second etching with 37% phosphoric acid + rinsed + dried + Transbond Plus SEP; Group 3: 30-second etching with 37% phosphoric acid + rinsed + dried + Transbond Plus SEP. Precoated metal brackets (3M Unitek, APC Plus, Victory brackets) were then bonded following the manufacturer's recommendation. An Instron Universal Testing Machine was used to test shear bond strength (SBS) at a crosshead speed of 0.5 mm/min. Adhesive remnant index (ARI) was assigned to all specimens under a 16 times magnification using a light microscope. RESULTS: One-way repeated measured analysis of variance test (ANOVA) revealed no significant differences in shear bond strength among all three groups. Kruskal Wallis test revealed that there was a significant difference in ARI score between Group 1 when compared to Groups 2 and 3. Two-way analysis of variance was used to examine any statistical difference in frequency of enamel fracture craters among the three groups. CONCLUSION: There was no statistical difference in shear bond strength between the three groups. Most specimens demonstrated adequate shear bond strength (>/= 6 MPa) for routine clinical application. Etching enamel with phosphoric acid prior to the use of Transbond Plus SEP resulted in more adhesive remaining on the enamel surface. The removal of this excess surface cement may lead to increased enamel loss during post debonding clean up.

This book was released on 2004 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conditioning and priming of unground enamel using conventional acid etchants and bonding resins has been recommended for effective bonding in orthodontics. The use of the newer single-step self-etching adhesives which etch, prime and apply the resin bonding agents simultaneously without rinsing, has been increasing in popularity. The purpose of this study was to compare the shear-peel bond strength and the amount of adhesive remaining on the tooth after debonding of a traditional two-step etch and prime technique, with a single-step alternative, when used with a composite resin adhesive system and a resin-modified glass ionomer cement system.
