Northwest Region Science and Technology and published by Thunder Bay, Ont. : Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources, Northwestern Ontario Forestry Program. This book was released on 1994 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A survey of recently seeded and planted jack pine stands was undertaken to estimate the cost effectiveness of various establishment techniques. The survey included 37 5-9-year-old jack pine stands in northwestern Ontario that were assessed using aerial photography. The stands represented the common regeneration methods of aerial and precision seeding on furrows, aerial and precision seeding on intermittent scalps, and planting. The survey areas also represented three site types based on depth of mineral soil to bedrock ranging from shallow to deep.

Book Synopsis Seed Ecophysiology of Temperate and Boreal Zone Forest Trees by : RobertE. Farmer
Download or read book Seed Ecophysiology of Temperate and Boreal Zone Forest Trees written by RobertE. Farmer and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-11-01 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first truly modern book solely devoted to seed reproduction of forest trees-from flowering to establishment, with emphasis on the interaction of environment with physiological processes. Focus is on seed function in natural settings and the application of information to natural regeneration of forests. This easy-to-read text addresses important principles and provides in-depth coverage of existing literature. Presentation of the information is organized to allow for a natural development of the main theme with full explanations of such important components as seed production, dispersal and germination, as well as the integral parts played by water, temperature, light, chemicals, animals, pathogens and aging. A highly useful book for investigators, practitioners or students.

Book Synopsis Bartt Precision Seeder Trial by : Brian Bulley
Download or read book Bartt Precision Seeder Trial written by Brian Bulley and published by Thunder Bay : Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources, Northwest Region Science and Technology. This book was released on 1995 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Precision seeding is an alternative method to aerial seeding for regenerating forests and has such advantages as less seed required per hectare, ability to control seedling density, and enabling simultaneous site preparation and seeding. Limited experience with mechanical direct seeding in northwestern Ontario prompted a June 1989 operational trial using the Bartt precision seeder on a site in the Wabigoon Forest near Ignace. This report summarizes the results of the trial after its fifth year. The objective of the trial was to determine whether the Bartt seeder could increase jack pine stocking when compared to a control no-seeding treatment. The results also include a comparison between the relative stocking and density of pine seedlings at the precision-seeded site and at an adjacent, aerially seeded jack pine stand of the same age.

Book Synopsis Seed Zone Delineation for Jack Pine in the Former Northwest Region of Ontario Using Short-term Testing and Geographic Information Systems by : W. H. Parker
Download or read book Seed Zone Delineation for Jack Pine in the Former Northwest Region of Ontario Using Short-term Testing and Geographic Information Systems written by W. H. Parker and published by Sault Ste. Marie, Ont. : Great Lakes Forestry Centre. This book was released on 1996 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes a study conducted to obtain a better understanding of the pattern of adaptive variation of jack pine that would improve existing seed transfer guidelines. A short-term provenance test was conducted for 102 seed sources grown in common environments at a greenhouse for one season and at three field trials for two growing seasons. In the study, 32 biological variables were determined for each seed source, including seedling heights, needle flushing dates, timing of shoot elongation, and relative freezing damage. Multiple regressions were run for each variable against 12 climatic variables interpolated for each of the seed sources using a geographic information system (GIS). Principal components analysis summarized the main components of variation. Regression equations were used to model patterns of adaptive variation, and these patterns were graphically reproduced as contour maps using GIS. A series of focal point seed zone maps were then produced by GIS intersection of the regression-based contour maps. Based on these maps, a summary of the pattern of adaptive variation in jack pine was used to produce a recommendation for breeding zone boundaries.

Book Synopsis The Role of Insectivorous Birds in Forest Ecosystems by : James G. Dickson
Download or read book The Role of Insectivorous Birds in Forest Ecosystems written by James G. Dickson and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Role of Insectivorous Birds in Forest Ecosystems is a publication of the proceedings of The Role of Insectivorous Birds in Forest Ecosystems symposium, held on July 13 and 14, 1978 at Nacogdoches, Texas. The proceedings discuss the ecology of insectivorous birds and acknowledge their roles in forest ecosystems. The book begins with an introduction to and history of insectivorous birds and their roles in forest ecosystems. It then discusses the sampling methods for bird and insect populations, bird foraging strategies, and ecology of insectivorous bird species and communities. This book will be helpful to forest managers in managing insectivorous birds. It is also especially valuable in formulating biological control strategies for use in forests.
