Book excerpt: Proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) stretching has often been identified as an effective stretching technique for improving range of motion (ROM) prior to exercise. The two PNF stretching techniques that are most commonly performed are autogenic inhibition and reciprocal inhibition stretching. These techniques increase ROM by applying resistance to either agonist (i.e. autogenic) or antagonist (i.e. reciprocal) muscle groups to reduce reflex activity. Variability in PNF stretching procedures, however, cause difficulty comparing studies and translating findings to clinical practice. Limited research has also been performed on the effects of PNF stretching on athletic performance. The present study compared the effects of static, autogenic inhibition, and reciprocal inhibition stretching on knee extension ROM and vertical jump performance. Thirty healthy participants (16 male and 14 female) performed an Active Knee Extension test and a Vertical Jump test after 4 counter balanced stretching conditions. The stretching conditions consisted of no stretching (control), static stretching, autogenic inhibition stretching, and reciprocal inhibition stretching. A one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) with repeated measures and the Bonferonni post hoc test identified static stretching, autogenic inhibition stretching, and reciprocal inhibition stretching significantly increased knee extension ROM by means of 7.8, 8.1, and 9.4 degrees, respectively when compared to no stretching (p.001). No significant differences were identified between the ROM increases associated with each technique (p0.05). Pairwise comparisons also identified no significant differences in vertical jump height (cm) before or after the use of static, autogenic inhibition, or reciprocal inhibition stretching (p>0.05). The present study was the first to compare these stretching techniques using recommended pre-activity procedures. The results of this study identified all three stretching techniques as effective techniques for improving ROM prior to exercise without decreasing vertical jump performance.

Despite having little research to support its use, self myofascial release--foam rolling--has been suggested as a viable alternative (Macdonald et al, 2013). The objective of this study was to determine how self myofascial release (SMR) of the hamstring muscle group affects ROM and torque production capabilities of the hamstring muscle group. Ten subjects (age 26.5 ± 6.5 years, mass 74.4 ± 12.1 kg, height 173 ± 8 cm) were recruited. A within subjects randomized, cross-over design was used. In the control session subjects warmed up and rested passively before having their hamstring ROM and isokinetic eccentric/concentric hamstring torque production capabilities measured. In the experimental session, subjects warmed up and performed SMR before testing. Paired t-tests were used to assess mean differences between passive and experimental measures (p >0.05). No significant differences in ROM or torque production were found between the control and experimental measures. In contrast to previous reports, these findings suggest that SMR is no more effective than passive rest in increasing ROM or isokinetic force production of the hamstring muscle group. --Page iv.

Maximal voluntary isometric contractions of the quadriceps and hamstrings were assessed for the dominant limb. Subjects: Seventeen moderately physically active males and females with no history of lower extremity injury within the past six months were used in this study. Measurements: Angular displacement in degrees was assessed to determine hamstrings extensibility. Peak muscle force production (PFP) and peak rate of force production (PRFP) was assessed for quadriceps and hamstring isometric contractions. The differences between treatments were analyzed using a repeated measure analysis of variance. Outcomes: ANOVA revealed no statistically significant difference between treatments for the variables of hip flexion range of motion and peak force production. Post hoc comparisons revealed that peak rate of force production was significantly less for the stretching treatment compared to the other three conditions. The outcomes showed no difference between the active treatments and the control condition in muscle force production and range of motion.

The residual effects of each method were also examined. Thirty-nine subjects were randomly assigned to one of three groups. Group A received a two minute passive stretch. Group B received hot packs applied for 30 minutes followed by a two minute passive stretch. Group C received ultrasound at 1.5 W/cm2 followed by a two minute passive stretch. Right hamstring tightness was measured using the Active-Knee-Extension Test as a pre-test, following each of the six treatments, and at each of the three residual effects evaluations. A repeated measures ANOVA revealed a significant interaction between measurement trials and treatment groups. A simple effects test and Tukey post hoc test showed that a significant difference existed between the pre-test and each post treatment measurements in all groups. It was also found that within the control group, a significant difference existed between the pre-test and the first and second residual effects measurements. The results of this study do not support the use of hot packs or ultrasound followed by a static stretch in the clinical setting, when the same results may be obtained by static stretch alone.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the acute effects of a single bout of "low intensity" static stretching of the hamstring muscle for 0, 30, 60, 120 seconds to determine which duration of stretching will produce and maintain the greatest gains in knee ROM. Nineteen participants aged 55-80 years were volunteered for the study. Results of the study showed that a longer duration stretch of 60-120-seconds was more effective in producing acute gains in knee ROM than a shorter duration of 30 seconds within the older adults.

There has been little research investigating the acute effects of static stretching of the antagonist on the expression of strength and power. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of static stretching of the antagonist muscles on a variety of strength and power measures. Sixteen active males were tested for vertical jump height and isokinetic torque production in a slow knee extension (KES) at 60 [degrees]/s and a fast knee extension (KEF) at 300 [degrees]/s. Electromyography was taken during knee extension tests for the vastus lateralis and the biceps femoris muscles. Participants performed these tests in a randomized counterbalanced order with and without prior antagonist stretching. All variables for stretching and non-stretching treatments were compared using paired t tests at an alpha of .05. Paired samples t tests revealed a significant (p = .034) difference between stretch KEF and non-stretch KEF conditions. There was no significant (p> .05) difference between KES stretch and non-stretch conditions. Vertical jump height was significantly (p = .011) higher for the stretching treatment than the non-stretching treatment. Vertical jump power was also significantly higher (p = .005) in the stretch versus the non-stretch condition. Paired samples t test indicated no significant (p> .05) difference between testing conditions for electromyography, represented as a percentage of maximal voluntary contraction (MVC). These results suggest that stretching the antagonist hamstrings prior to high speed isokinetic knee extension increases torque production. It also demonstrated that stretching the hip flexors and dorsi flexors may enhance jump height and power. Practitioners may use this information to acutely enhance strength and power performances.

Other research has found that stretching with vibration is an effective method for increasing range of motion about the hips while performing the splits. These studies have utilized athletic populations such as gymnasts and divers who require great ranges of motion. It is unclear whether similar results can be shown in the general population who do not utilize the same extreme ranges of motion. The purpose of this study was to measure the effect ofvibration while stretching on hip extension range of motion. Thirty participants (21.5 ± 1.77 years, 172 ± 8.64 cm, and 73.18 ± 11.82 kg) had their maximal hip extension range of motion measured before the stretching intervention. Hip extension was measured using a double-arm universal goniometer and a modified Thomas test. Each subject served as their own control and a randomly chosen leg served as the experimental condition and the other served as the control. Subjects stretched their hip flexors in a lunge position on the experimental leg with the vibration stimulus activated, and again on the control leg without the vibration stimulus. After the intervention, maximal hip extension was measured again. Difference scores were calculated in each condition and compared using a student's paired t-test. The paired t-test showed that both static stretching with vibration and static stretching alone significantly increased hip extension range of motion (p = 0.001 and 0.007, respectively). A paired t-test also found that the vibration stimulus increased range of motion significantly more than static stretching alone with a mean difference of 1.81 ± 3.30° (p = 0.005).
