This book was released on 1988 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A four-month experiment was conducted to evaluate the toxicity of a sewage effluent using both single-species and whole ecosystem tests. Fresh effluent from the East Greenwich, Rhode Island, sewage treatment plant was added daily to six experimental ecosystems (mesocosms). Sewage effluent additions were made at 0.1, 1.0, and 10% of the daily seawater input (960 L/day) from Narragansett Bay. Reagent grade, inorganic nutrients were added to the control, 0.1% and 1.0% effluent treatments to normalize nutrient loadings in all treatments. The Arbacia punctulata sea urchin sperm cell test was conducted on effluent and mesocosm samples. In the mesocosms, measurements of responses at the population, community, and ecosystem levels of biological organization were made.
Book Synopsis Ecological Toxicity Testing by : John Cairns, Jr.
Download or read book Ecological Toxicity Testing written by John Cairns, Jr. and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1994-12-27 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ecological Toxicity Testing provides a critical comparison of toxicity tests at different levels of biological organization from cells to landscapes. While ecological toxicity tests can be designed at any of the many levels of complexity and on spatial scales ranging from square millimeters to square kilometers, the uses to which this information can be put often differs with scale. In the past decade, tests at all levels have been refined and subjected to critical evaluations of their predictive accuracy. This text/reference includes evaluations of toxicity test systems at various scales and complexities by expert practitioners. It also offers broader analyses of the effects of scale on endpoint selection, test design and analyses, and chemical sensitivity.

Book Synopsis Review of Single Species Toxicity Tests by : U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
Download or read book Review of Single Species Toxicity Tests written by U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and published by . This book was released on 2013-10 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) was introduced on December 2, 1970 by President Richard Nixon. The agency is charged with protecting human health and the environment, by writing and enforcing regulations based on laws passed by Congress. The EPA's struggle to protect health and the environment is seen through each of its official publications. These publications outline new policies, detail problems with enforcing laws, document the need for new legislation, and describe new tactics to use to solve these issues. This collection of publications ranges from historic documents to reports released in the new millennium, and features works like: Bicycle for a Better Environment, Health Effects of Increasing Sulfur Oxides Emissions Draft, and Women and Environmental Health.
Book Synopsis Comparison of Estimates of Effects of a Complex Effluent at Differing Levels of Biological Organization by : R. Ayers
Download or read book Comparison of Estimates of Effects of a Complex Effluent at Differing Levels of Biological Organization written by R. Ayers and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Impact of a toxic municipal sewage effluent containing textile dyes was evaluated using standard acute and chronic single-species tests and a microcosm test using indigenous microbiota from the receiving stream. Estimated effect levels were compared with the calculated in-stream waste concentration and measured impacts on stream microbiota and macrobenthos. Acute tests examined effluent effects on Daphnia pulex, and short-term chronic effluent dilution tests were conducted using Ceriodaphnia dubia and larval Pimephales promelas. Microcosm tests examined effluent effects on the structure and function of microbial communities on artificial substrates. Additional tests examined effects of receiving stream water on C. dubia and microcosms.
