Book Synopsis A Comparison of Hypertrophy, Strength and Power Changes Between Eccentric Isotonic and Eccentric Isokinetic Leg Training by : Gail M. Trojack
Download or read book A Comparison of Hypertrophy, Strength and Power Changes Between Eccentric Isotonic and Eccentric Isokinetic Leg Training written by Gail M. Trojack and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effects of 6 week eccentric isotonic and eccentric isokinetic training programs on hypertrophy, strength and power development in the quadriceps were compared. Male Ss (N=22) participated including 7 training isotonically (T), 7 training isokinetically (K), and 8 control subjects performing no resistance leg training (C). Ss performed 3 sets of 10 repetitions on Monday, Wednesday and Friday with an additional set on Friday to systematically adjust work load. No group significantly increased thigh girth or body weight. Both groups exhibited carryover of concentric strength from eccentric training in certain tests. (T) improved significantly over (C) in isotonic concentric one repetition maximum, 5 second isometric, and both Margaria Kalaman power tests. (T) improved significantly over (K) in the concentric isotonic one repetition maximum as well. (K) improved significantly over (C) in average concentric peak torque (170°/second) and in the Margaria Kalaman power test at 6 meters. Both groups exhibited carryover of strength when tested at fast speeds from slow speed training programs (60°/second). (T) improved significantly over (C) in average eccentric peak torque (170°/second) and the Margaria Kalaman tests of power. (K) significantly improved over (C) in average concentric peak torque (170°/second), eccentric total work (170°/second) and the Margaria Kalaman power test at 6 meters. Both groups significantly improved over (C) in eccentric isotonic one repetition maximums. Only (K) significantly increased average eccentric peak torque at 60° /second over (C).

Book Synopsis The Effects of Retro Running on Quadriceps and Hamstring Muscle Strength by : Craig G. Anderson
Download or read book The Effects of Retro Running on Quadriceps and Hamstring Muscle Strength written by Craig G. Anderson and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of retro running (RR) training on concentric and eccentric quadriceps and hamstring muscle strength. Fourteen healthy female college students (mean age = 21.1 + 1.8 yrs, mean mass = 59.7 -C 5.3 kg, mean height = 160.7 & 4.8 cm) with no history of forefoot or midfoot injury participated. All subjects were currently running at least 16.0 km/wk (10.0 mi/wk) and maintained their running regimens throughout the study. Concentric and eccentric quadriceps and hamstring muscle strength of each subject was tested on the KinCom 500H computerized dynamometer prior to and immediately following the 6 weeks of RR training. The RR group additionally participated in RR training on a treadmill three times per week for 6 weeks with 100% compliance. Data was analyzed with four repeated measures ANOVAs, one for each of the strength test modes. A correction factor was utilized secondary to the multiple ANOVAs, resulting in an alpha level of 0.0125 being required for significance. While the RR group showed increases in muscle strength following the 6 weeks of RR training in all four testing modes, these differences were not statistically significant (P> .05). Though no significant differences were found, the effect of RR on increasing quadriceps and hamstring muscle strength cannot be ruled out.

Book Synopsis Progress in Medical Genetics by : Marlene A. Horry
Download or read book Progress in Medical Genetics written by Marlene A. Horry and published by Nova Publishers. This book was released on 2006 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past decade, medical genetics has emerged as an important and powerful medical speciality with increasing appreciation of its role and function among the medical specialities. This emergence is related to a great extent to the progress in the Human Genome Project which promises wide ranging applications in the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of human diseases. Nevertheless, discussions about the role of genetics in preventive medicine and public health rightfully lead to ethical, legal and social concerns about general applicability of genetic testing in the population. The interpretation of the word prevention in the context of genetic diseases leads to the unavoidable discussions of genetic engineering, prenatal diagnosis and selective termination, as well as broader concerns about discrimination in health care coverage, employment and in society.

Book Synopsis The Quadmill: effects of eccentric training vs. concentric training on lower extremity power and anaerobic capacity by : John Crosby
Download or read book The Quadmill: effects of eccentric training vs. concentric training on lower extremity power and anaerobic capacity written by John Crosby and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Training focuses on the concentric action of muscle during exercise for most exercise programs, but eccentric training may yield greater results. The Quadmill is a unique piece of training equipment that focuses on training the quadriceps muscle eccentrically. Purpose: to determine if using the Quadmill could increase power and anaerobic capacity to the same level, if not greater, than a standard concentric focused lower body training protocol. Participants were 44 undergraduate college students (24 Male 20 Female) Design: participants placed into three equal groups (Quadmill, Lifting, Control). The two experimental groups (Quadmill and Lifting) underwent seven weeks of a training intervention based on group. Pre- and post-tests of power (vertical jump height and approach jump height) and anaerobic capacity (shuttle run) were used to measure performance. The Quadmill group was statistically significant from both of the other groups in terms of power after the seven weeks. Conclusion: eccentric training with the Quadmill can yield grater power development than concentric training with a standard resistance training program.
