Book Synopsis Tiger Salamanders by : Jens Benthien
Download or read book Tiger Salamanders written by Jens Benthien and published by tredition. This book was released on 2018-11-28 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jens Benthien introduces the interested beginner to the world of keeping and breeding Tiger Salamanders in the terrarium, but also provides some useful pointers and suggestions for the more advanced terrarium keeper. While Tiger Salamanders are well suited to the beginner in keeping amphibians, it is also of interest to the more advanced enthusiast, in particular because it poses some challenges with regard to propagating it. Following an overview of the genus, the distribution, and the ecology of Tiger Salamanders in the wild, the book with its appr. 80 color photographs details how to house these animals according to their biological needs, how to properly feed and care for them, and what is required to propagate the representatives of the North American Tiger Salamanders of the genus Ambystoma. Their ability to optionally remain and become sexually mature at their larval stage (neoteny), the problem of hybridizing, and the possible emergence of color anomalies are briefly discussed as well.

Book Synopsis Comparative Vertebrate Neuroanatomy by : Ann B. Butler
Download or read book Comparative Vertebrate Neuroanatomy written by Ann B. Butler and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2005-09-02 with total page 739 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Comparative Vertebrate Neuroanatomy Evolution and Adaptation Second Edition Ann B. Butler and William Hodos The Second Edition of this landmark text presents a broad survey of comparative vertebrate neuroanatomy at the introductory level, representing a unique contribution to the field of evolutionary neurobiology. It has been extensively revised and updated, with substantially improved figures and diagrams that are used generously throughout the text. Through analysis of the variation in brain structure and function between major groups of vertebrates, readers can gain insight into the evolutionary history of the nervous system. The text is divided into three sections: * Introduction to evolution and variation, including a survey of cell structure, embryological development, and anatomical organization of the central nervous system; phylogeny and diversity of brain structures; and an overview of various theories of brain evolution * Systematic, comprehensive survey of comparative neuroanatomy across all major groups of vertebrates * Overview of vertebrate brain evolution, which integrates the complete text, highlights diversity and common themes, broadens perspective by a comparison with brain structure and evolution of invertebrate brains, and considers recent data and theories of the evolutionary origin of the brain in the earliest vertebrates, including a recently proposed model of the origin of the brain in the earliest vertebrates that has received strong support from newly discovered fossil evidence Ample material drawn from the latest research has been integrated into the text and highlighted in special feature boxes, including recent views on homology, cranial nerve organization and evolution, the relatively large and elaborate brains of birds in correlation with their complex cognitive abilities, and the current debate on forebrain evolution across reptiles, birds, and mammals. Comparative Vertebrate Neuroanatomy is geared to upper-level undergraduate and graduate students in neuroanatomy, but anyone interested in the anatomy of the nervous system and how it corresponds to the way that animals function in the world will find this text fascinating.

Book Synopsis Visual Behavior in Salamanders by : Gerhard Roth
Download or read book Visual Behavior in Salamanders written by Gerhard Roth and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Salamanders are subject to misconceptions even among vertebrate zoologists and physiologists. They are often said to exist only in northern temperate zones, being bound to aquatic or very moist cool habitats. In reality, more than half of all salamander species live in subtropical and tropical zones, ex clusively in the New World. Again, more than half of the salamand~r species have become totally independent of aquatic habitats following the loss of a free larval stage. Many of the subtropical and tropical salamanders have become adapted to rather high temperatures up to 26-28 DC. The brain and the sensory systems of salamanders are often considered to be primitive, and their behavior is thought to be simple and uninfluenced by learning. However, careful studies show that the salamander brain possesses virtually all the ana tomical and functional properties found in anurans, which are usually regarded as being much more evolved with respect to the guidance of comparable behavior. Most of the salamander species not only possess a highly efficient visual system, which is the topic of the present work, but can orient themselves almost as effectively by means of olfaction, vibration sense, and electroreception. Furthermore, it has recently been shown that at least part of their behavior, especially that concerned with feeding and prey preferences, is strongly influenced by individual experience.
Book Synopsis Phylogenies and the Comparative Method in Animal Behavior by : Emília P. Martins
Download or read book Phylogenies and the Comparative Method in Animal Behavior written by Emília P. Martins and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1996 with total page 429 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last ten years, the "comparative method" has been revolutionized by modern statistical ways of incorporating phylogenies into the design and analysis of comparative studies. The results of this revolution are particularly important in the study of animal behavior, which has relied on interspecific comparisons to infer universal trends and evolutionary patterns. The chapters of this edited volume consider the impact of modern phylogenetic comparative methods on the study of animal behavior and discuss the main issues that need to be considered in design and analysis of a comparative study, considers possible differences between the evolution of behavior and the evolution of morphology, and reviews how phylogenetic comparative studies have been used in certain areas of behavioral research.

Book Synopsis Evolutionary Neuroscience by : Jon H Kaas
Download or read book Evolutionary Neuroscience written by Jon H Kaas and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2009-07-28 with total page 1039 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Evolutionary Neuroscience is a collection of articles in brain evolution selected from the recent comprehensive reference, Evolution of Nervous Systems (Elsevier, Academic Press, 2007). The selected chapters cover a broad range of topics from historical theory to the most recent deductions from comparative studies of brains. The articles are organized in sections focused on theories and brain scaling, the evolution of brains from early vertebrates to present-day fishes, amphibians, reptiles and birds, the evolution of mammalian brains, and the evolution of primate brains, including human brains. Each chapter is written by a leader or leaders in the field, and has been reviewed by other experts. Specific topics include brain character reconstruction, principles of brain scaling, basic features of vertebrate brains, the evolution of the major sensory systems, and other parts of brains, what we can learn from fossils, the origin of neocortex, and the evolution of specializations of human brains. The collection of articles will be interesting to anyone who is curious about how brains evolved from the simpler nervous systems of the first vertebrates into the many different complex forms now found in present-day vertebrates. This book would be of use to students at the graduate or undergraduate levels, as well as professional neuroscientists, cognitive scientists, and psychologists. Together, the chapters provide a comprehensive list of further reading and references for those who want to inquire further. The most comprehensive, authoritative and up-to-date single volume collection on brain evolution Full color throughout, with many illustrations Written by leading scholars and experts

Book Synopsis Integumentary Developmental Patterns in the Tiger Salamander (Ambystoma Tigrinum) by : Anne M. Seitz
Download or read book Integumentary Developmental Patterns in the Tiger Salamander (Ambystoma Tigrinum) written by Anne M. Seitz and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: " ... The purpose of this study was to determine developmental patterns in the integument of the tiger salamander, Ambystoma tigrinum. Because the tiger salamander begins life as an aquatic larvae and metamorphoses into a terrestrial adult, drastic changes must occur in the dermis and epidermis to allow for success in both habitats. The analysis of specific integumentary structures with regards to body length and overall stage of development allows a view of the process of maturation that the tiger salamander must follow to succeed in a terrestrial environment ... I hypothesize that as Ambystoma tigrinum approaches, enters and completes metamorphosis, the integument will change from that of a fish-like larvae to that suited for life as a terrestrial adult"--Author's introduction.
