Book excerpt: Purpose: According to the National Factsheet on the Educational Outcomes of Children in Foster Care (2014), Foster children are three times more likely to be expelled from school, two times more likely to receive out of school suspensions, and on average have experienced more than five school changes in their educational career. The purpose of this study is to explore the relationship between a foster child’s academic success and the number of placements they have been in. Research Question: Is a foster child’s school performance as indicated by their grade point average impacted negatively if they have been placed in multiple homes? Method: In a secondary data analysis of 20 current foster children’s client files, we compared GPA scores (as a measure of school achievement) of foster youth with single versus multiple placements; and stable (more than one year in current placement) versus unstable placements. Results: An independent-samples t-test was conducted to compare GPA for single placement vs multiple placements foster youth. There was significant difference for single placement (M = 2.48, SD = .43) multiple placements, M = 1.86, SD = 0.59; t(6) = -2.38, p = 0.03 (one-tailed). In support of the hypothesis, foster youth with a single placement had a higher GPA. Another independent-samples t-test was conducted to compare GPA for stable (more than one year in current placement) and unstable placements foster youth. There was significant vii difference in scores for stable placement (M = 2.29, SD = 0.56) and unstable placement M = 1.73, SD = 0.54; t(17) = 2.26, p = 0.0186. The results show that foster children with stable placements had a higher GPA then unstable placements. Discussion: An analysis of data shows that multiple placements has a negative impact on a foster child’s GPA, while having a stable placement can increase a child’s GPA.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What happens to looked-after children in the longer term? This book analyses the outcomes of a large-scale study of foster children in the UK. It includes individual case studies and draws extensively on the views of foster children themselves. The authors examine: Why children remain fostered or move to different settings (adoption, residential care, their own families or independent living) How the children fare in these different settings and why What the children feel about what happens to them. Other important issues covered include the support given to birth families to enable children to return home, the experience of adopters, the ways in which foster care can become more permanent and the experiences of young people in independent living. In bringing together these results the book provides a wealth of findings, many of them new and challenging. It offers positive and practical recommendations and will be an enduring resource for practitioners, academics, policy makers, trainers, managers and all those concerned with the well-being of looked-after children.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the fact that most people become parents and everyone who has ever lived has had parents, parenting remains a mystifying subject about which almost everyone has opinions, but about which few people agree. Striking permutations on the theme of parenting are emerging--single parenthood, blended families, lesbian and gay parents, and teen versus fifties first-time moms and dads. Divided into four volumes, the Handbook of Parenting is concerned with different types of parents, basic characteristics of parenting, forces that shape parenting, problems faced by parents, and the practical sides of parenting. Contributors have worked in different ways toward understanding all of these diverse aspects of parenting and look to the most recent research and thinking in the field to shed light on many topics every parent has wondered about. Because development is too subtle, dynamic, and intricate to admit that parental caregiving alone determines the course and outcome of ontogeny, volume 1 concerns how children influence parenting. Volume 2 relates parenting to its biological roots and sets parenting in its ecological framework. Volume 3 distinguishes among the cast of characters responsible for parenting and is revealing of the psychological make-ups and social interests of those individuals. Volume 4 describes problems of parenting as well as the promotion of positive parenting practices. Written to be read and absorbed in a single sitting, each chapter addresses a different but central topic in parenting, and is rooted in current thinking and theory as well as classic and modern research on that topic. All chapters follow a standard organization including an introduction to the chapter as a whole followed by historical considerations of the topic, a discussion of central issues and theory, a review of classic and modern research, forecasts of future directions for theory and research, and a conclusion. In addition to considering their own convictions and research, the chapter contributors present and broadly interpret all major points of view and central lines of inquiry.

Book excerpt: This volume focuses on concepts central to the understanding of the key features of individuality which undergo significant transformations throughout the adolescent period: Personality, self, and ego. While rooted in distinct theoretical traditions, these three concepts, in combination, capture the core aspects of the formation of the individual's unique sense of self or identity, a psychosocial development fundamentally associated with adolescence. Consistent with the developmental-systems models of person-context relations at the forefront of current human development theory and research, the articles within this volume focus on the dynamic, reciprocal relations between youth and key socializing agents within their ecologies. Nevertheless, the articles represented in this volume illustrate that when attempting to understand the development of personality- and self-systems, scholars differ in the extent to which they place primary emphasis on the individual, on the context, or on the relationship between the two.
