Book Synopsis Lorca's Late Poetry by : Andrew A. Anderson

Book excerpt: Federico García Lorca (1898-1938), is often thought of as a fine lyric poet of the 1920s who then developed into one of Spain's greatest playwrights (1931-36). But other aspects of Lorca's literary career are equally significant: the earlier theatrical pieces, which he had started writing by 1918, the bold, experimental, expressionist plays of 1930-31, and (the subject of this volume) the later poetry written as his powers as a dramatist matured in the 1930s. Professor Anderson's book is the first in any language to focus specifically on Lorca's poetic output from 1931 to 1936. It offers extensive, detailed analyses of all the poetry composed during that period: Diván del Tamarit with its Arab-Andalusian flavour and stylization, the Llanto por Ignacio Sánchez Mejías, a sustained lament on the death of a bullfighter friend, Seis poemas galegos, and Sonetos, love poetry echoing Petrarch, Shakespeare and Góngora - four collections equal or superior in quality, power and suggestiveness to Lorca's canonic poetical works. Adopting a literary-critical approach based on the close reading of individual texts, with relevant background information, Professor Anderson elaborates on the themes and techniques, imagery and symbolism, strengths and weaknesses, of each poem in the four collections. Thereby he can relate this corpus to the whole of Lorca's work, showing that it cannot be neatly categorized under any of the avant-garde "-isms" prevalent in the 1920s and 1930s. His arguments for a revised appraisal of Lorca's creative development lead to a compelling case for a re-evaluation of his "late poetry". An Appendix gives English translations of all the poems under discussion (other Spanish quotations are translated in the text), and there is a fifteen-page bibliography of primary and secondary material.

Book excerpt: Although Lorca and, to a lesser extent, Alberti, are commonly described as popular poets, little has been done to demonstrate their fundamental attraction to, and repeated experiments with, the poetry of Spain's oral tradition. In this study of Lorca and Alberti's early dramatic works, lectures, and presentations, we see that lo popular was an essential feature in their very conception of art, as well as in their view of themselves as Spain's leading literary ambassadors, during the years 1923 to 1935.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1926, as a young man of 28 with a growing reputation as an oral poet, Federico Garcia Lorca (1898-1936) toyed with the idea of proving his worth in writing by bringing out a boxed set of three volumes of his verse. Because the Suites , Canciones , and the Poema del cante jondo eventually came out singly (in the case of the Suites , posthumously), readers have not always realised that they formed a single body of work -- one which, Lorca himself was surprised to note, has 'una rarisima unidad', an odd unity of aims and accomplishment. This is poetry which takes up the question of desire in progressively depersonalizing ways, and shows modernism coming into being. Through renunciation, by cutting away the personal and the taboo, Lorca created a poetry that, like no other in Europe, stood between the avant-garde and oral traditions, making their contradictions his truth. Roberta Ann Quance is Senior Lecturer in Spanish at Queen's University, Belfast.

Book Synopsis Lorca's Drawings and Poems by : Cecelia J. Cavanaugh
Download or read book Lorca's Drawings and Poems written by Cecelia J. Cavanaugh and published by Bucknell University Press. This book was released on 1995 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lorca's Drawings and Poems focuses on the act of reading Lorca's drawn or written texts and how the reading of one genre can inform the reading of another. Throughout the study, poetry and drawings from every period of Lorca's career are examined. Selected drawings are interpreted; next, poems contemporary to those drawings are analyzed in their light. In chapter 1, a common poetics is extracted from Lorca's comments about his drawings and writing and placed in the context of the literary and artistic movements of his day. The evolution of the literary criticism that examines Lorca's drawings is traced and reviewed. Lorca's texts are examined from varying perspectives in the chapters that follow. In chapter 2, drawings and poems from 1927 to 1928 are analyzed in light of Lorca's participations in artistic and literary movements during those years. Texts from each period of Lorca's work are read in chapter 3 in a study of Lorca's employment of space and his depiction of setting and subject in his drawings and poems. Such a chronological approach allows the reading of Lorca's texts to reveal the evolution of his aesthetics as well as to identify the imagery and techniques that remained consistent throughout his career.
