Relations for the expected values and variances of the measurements obtained using these methods are derived. The relative advantages of these methods for long and short sample measurements are dicussed. A method is presented for computing estimates of the coefficients of the differential equation for the human pilot from the regression coefficients obtained for the orthogonalized exponential analysis method. Differences in describing function estimates obtained from direct open-loop measurements in which the error signal is used as the input for analysis and estimates obtained from closed-loop measurements in which the system input signal is used as the input are also discussed.
