This book was released on 1989 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Introduction the author describes the experience which led him to write the book, and on which much of it is based. He then considers seven themes: these are myth, time, evil, purity, images, renunciation, and woman. Each theme is allotted a chapter in which it is considered first within a Hindu and then within a Christian context. This treatment brings out the differences and similarities between the two traditions in ways which are often unexpected. In the final chapter he examines the implications of his findings both for the theology of religions and for inter-faith encounter.

Book excerpt: "How are Christians, with their claims of a definitive gospel, salvation once for all achieved by Jesus, to regard the beliefs of other religions? Many different answers have been given, particularly during this century, when greater mobility and social change have made the questions of local and practical, as well as theoretical and international interest. The problems and the issues involved are well illustrated in Christian attitudes to Hinduism, and it is these that Professor Sharpe discusses in his book. After looking at the older 'orthodox' views of the relationships between religions, he considers the argument, popular at the beginning of this century, that Christ fulfils all religions, the criticism of this thesis and the view that other religions, whatever their merits, are morally deficient. Then after studying Hindu views of Christianity, he follows development through the period between the wars and post-war developments in Protestantism and in relation to Vatican II to the positive attitudes which are to be found today among adherents of both religions." - Publisher

Book excerpt: This title looks at two of the greatest religions of mankind in terms of their number of adherents: Hinduism, which is largely restricted to India, and Christianity, which has spread worldwide. The contrasts between the two seem on the surface to be vast, but when we look more closely we find that certain themes are of central concern to both. These are the themes this book explores. It demonstrates how they are treated in both religions, showing the diversity of approach within each and how they interrelate. Starting from the most basic issue of the nature of the divine, successive chapters then look at divine interaction with mankind, authority and mediation, devotionalism and personal piety, meditation and asceticism, social values and morality, and meaning and ends. The final chapter surveys the history of contact and dialogue between the two religions from as early as the third century AD up to the present. This fascinating subject matter is handled in a manner that serves to highlight the rich variety of both traditions and provides an accurate, yet readable, account of the material. The approach is basically scholarly but not purely academic: attention is paid both to the history of the two religions and to their current positions and practice. The presentation is consistent and clear, ensuring that the book will be of real interest to a wide readership.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the history that divides them, Hinduism and Orthodox Christianity have much in common. In The Human Icon, Christine Mangala Frost explores how both religions seek to realise the divine potential of every human being, and the differences in their approach. Frost, who has experienced both the extraordinary riches and the all-too-human failings of Hinduism and Orthodox Christianity from the inside, is perfectly placed to examine the convergences and divergences between the two faiths. Inspired by a desire to clear up the misunderstandings that exist between the two, The Human Icon is a study in how two faiths, superficially dissimilar, can nevertheless find meeting points everywhere. The powerful intellectual and spiritual patristic traditions of Orthodox Christianity offer a rare tool for revitalising too-often stalled dialogue with Hinduism and present the chance for a broader and more diverse understanding of the oldest religion in the world. Tracing the long history of Orthodox Christianity in India, from the Thomas Christians of ancient times to the distinctive theology of Paulos Mar Gregorios and the Kottayam School, Frost explores the impact of Hindu thought on Indian Christianity and considers the potential for confluence. With a breadth of interest that spans Hindu bhakti, Orthodox devotional theology, Vedanta and theosis, as well as meditational Yoga and hesychastic prayer, Frost offers a fresh perspective on how the devotees of both faiths approach the ideal of divinisation, and presents a thoughtful, modern methodology for a dialogue of life.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Higher Hinduism in Relation to Christianity: Certain Aspects of Hindu Thought, From the Christian Standpoint I take great pleasure in writing a few words of introduction to this important essay by my friend Rev. T. E. Slater, of the London Mission, Bangalore. The present work was submitted in 1899 to the Saxon Missionary Conference at Leipzig in response to an invitation for a 'Missionary Prize Essay' on 'a presentation of the fundamental views of the Hindus, religious and philosophical, according to the Vedas, Upanishads, and of the Brahminic (especially the Vedanta) philosophy, and an estimate of the same from a Christian point of view.' The Essay (which thus determined the form and context of the present work) was to have in view the fact that, in the intellectual struggle which has been evoked by Christian missions in India, the educated Hindus are, indeed, ready to throw over the popular religion, but cling so much the more tenaciously to their more ancient faith as contained in their best religious literature. It was designed to instruct educated friends of missions at home in the true genius of the Hindu religion and its fundamental distinction from Christianity, as well as to aid the missionary abroad in his conflict with Hinduism. In response to this invitation, eight essays were sent in, five of which were written in German and three in English.
