McCarthy and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The current study examined predictive validity of the Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills (DIBELS) for future performance on the Wisconsin Knowledge and Concepts Examination (WKCE). The intent of the study was 1) to explore the overall validity for the use of DIBELS assessments with English-learner (EL) students and 2) to compare the predictive validity between EL and non-EL students. Spring of first grade performance on the DIBELS assessments of Nonsense Word Fluency (NWF), Phoneme Segmentation Fluency (PSF), and Oral Reading Fluency (ORF) was compared to Fall of third grade performance on the WKCE for 450 non-EL students and 58 EL students. The EL students were primarily of Hmong-speaking background. Comparisons were then made between the predictive validity of DIBELS assessments for EL and non-EL students to determine if there was a difference in how well these assessments correlated with future WKCE performance. NWF and ORF appear to have the strongest predictive validity for future WKCE performance for EL students, with ORF being the more significantly correlated assessment between the two. ORF and NWF were also the two most strongly correlated assessments for the non-EL students. When reflecting on the predictive validity differences between EL and non-EL students, the correlation was much stronger for the non-EL students, suggesting that the DIBELS assessments are better predictors for WKCE performance for non-EL students overall. Findings are discussed in terms of the relationship between the DIBELS assessments' predictive validity for the WKCE for EL and non-EL students. Limitations and implications for future research are also discussed." -pages iii-iv

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Teaching reading in the mainstream classroom is a challenge. This challenge is compounded when trying to meet the needs of English language learners. Recently, Response to Intervention (RTI) has been suggested as a framework for classroom teachers to use in order to meet the wide range of needs of their students. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of an RTI reading instructional model when used with English language learners (ELLs) in mainstream classrooms. A mixed-method, quasi-experimental, pre/post design was implemented. A purposive sample was drawn from third grade students in schools that integrated ELLs and native English speakers. Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills (DIBELS) and the Developmental Reading Assessment (DRA) were used to assess Reading achievement. Student reading assessment scores from the end of second grade were used as a covariate. Data were analyzed using MANCOVA. Further analysis of the ELLs included in the study was conducted using MANCOVA with Assessing Comprehension and Communication in English State-to-State (ACCESS) reading subsections as a covariate. The results of this study showed that ELLs in schools implementing reading RTI were able to achieve predicted reading benchmark levels at the same rate as native English speakers in the same schools. Overall, the number of students reaching benchmark levels was nearly equal in RTI and comparison schools; however, RTI schools had a greater number of ELLs reaching the benchmark. ELLs in RTI schools made the greatest gains in reading scores between assessments as compared to all other groups in the study.

Book Synopsis Essentials of Assessing, Preventing, and Overcoming Reading Difficulties by : David A. Kilpatrick

This book was released on 2015-08-10 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Practical, effective, evidence-based reading interventions that change students' lives Essentials of Understanding and Assessing Reading Difficulties is a practical, accessible, in-depth guide to reading assessment and intervention. It provides a detailed discussion of the nature and causes of reading difficulties, which will help develop the knowledge and confidence needed to accurately assess why a student is struggling. Readers will learn a framework for organizing testing results from current assessment batteries such as the WJ-IV, KTEA-3, and CTOPP-2. Case studies illustrate each of the concepts covered. A thorough discussion is provided on the assessment of phonics skills, phonological awareness, word recognition, reading fluency, and reading comprehension. Formatted for easy reading as well as quick reference, the text includes bullet points, icons, callout boxes, and other design elements to call attention to important information. Although a substantial amount of research has shown that most reading difficulties can be prevented or corrected, standard reading remediation efforts have proven largely ineffective. School psychologists are routinely called upon to evaluate students with reading difficulties and to make recommendations to address such difficulties. This book provides an overview of the best assessment and intervention techniques, backed by the most current research findings. Bridge the gap between research and practice Accurately assess the reason(s) why a student struggles in reading Improve reading skills using the most highly effective evidence-based techniques Reading may well be the most important thing students are taught during their school careers. It is a skill they will use every day of their lives; one that will dictate, in part, later life success. Struggling students need help now, and Essentials of Understanding and Assessing Reading Difficulties shows how to get these students on track.
Book Synopsis The Validity of DIBELS as an Indicator of Early Literacy Achievement by : Theodore Zarowny

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As assessment for learning becomes a more common practice in schools throughout North America, this study adds to the current literature that validates assessment practices which educators may use to help guide instruction and support student learning. This study examines the concurrent validity of the Dynamic Indicators of Early Literacy Skills (DIBELS) using Kindergarten and Grade 1 teacher-assigned year-end scores and reading Curriculum Based Measurement (WRC) as the criterion variables. Besides conducting a test of validity, this study will also establish DIBELS benchmarks, or cut-off points, for Kindergarten and Grade 1 using a Northern British Columbia sample. DIBELS scores and CBM reading scores for Kindergarten and Grade 1 students were compared to their final Language Arts performance score. A correlational analysis between the criterion and predictive variables did not confirm concurrent validity of the various DIBELS measures at the Kindergarten level. Being limited to a pass/fail option for final reporting of Language Arts, the teacher assigned final scores resulted in a skewed distribution making a correlation difficult to confirm, indicating the possibility of a Type II error with the Language Arts data. However, significant correlation coefficients were produced between Grade 1 DIBELS measure and WRC. After establishing benchmarks for DIBELS, risk factors were able to be established. These risk factors provide an indication to educators the degree to which a student may be at risk in their early literacy development. This study supports the use of using DIBELS as part of a teacher's assessment regime to identify potential at risk readers so that timely and appropriate interventions can be put into place.

Download or read book THE EARLY GRADE READING ASSESSMENT written by Amber K. Gove and published by RTI Press. This book was released on 2011-09-28 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Early Grade Reading Assessment (EGRA) measures students' progress towards reading. EGRA gauges early literacy skills through a 15-minute individual oral assessment of five fundamental reading skills. RTI worked with education experts to develop the EGRA in 2006, and it has been piloted and implemented in more than 40 countries. This volume aims to take stock of the substantial amount of information and experience generated through the use of EGRA, and to share this knowledge with practitioners, policymakers, and international donors. Chapters cover not only particular applications of the instrument but also put EGRA in the context of broader issues and developments in literacy and education.
