Book excerpt: Demand estimation is a fundamental task in retail operations and revenue management, providing the necessary input data for inventory control, assortment and price optimization models. The task is particularly difficult in operational contexts when product availability varies over time and customers may substitute. In addition to the classical multinomial logit (MNL) model and its variants (e.g., nested logit, mixed MNL), new demand models have been proposed (e.g., the Markov chain model) and others have been revisited (e.g., the rank-based and exponomial models). At the same time, new computational approaches were developed to ease the estimation function (e.g., column generation, EM algorithms). In this paper, we conduct a systematic, empirical study of different demand models and estimation algorithms, spanning both maximum likelihood and least squares criteria. Through an exhaustive set of numerical experiments on synthetic and real data, we provide comparative statistics of the quality of the different choice models and estimation methods, and characterize operational environments suitable for different model/estimation implementations.

Book excerpt: This paper develops a dynamic model of retail competition and uses it to study the impact of the expansion of a new national competitor on the structure of urban markets. In order to accommodate substantial heterogeneity (both observed and unobserved) across agents and markets, the paper first develops a general framework for estimating and solving dynamic discrete choice models in continuous time that is computationally light and readily applicable to dynamic games. In the proposed framework, players face a standard dynamic discrete choice problem at decision times that occur stochastically. The resulting stochastic-sequential structure naturally admits the use of CCP methods for estimation and makes it possible to compute counterfactual simulations for relatively high-dimensional games. The model and method are applied to the retail grocery industry, into which Wal-Mart began rapidly expanding in the early 1990s, eventually attaining a dominant position. We find that Wal-Mart's expansion into groceries came mostly at the expense of the large incumbent supermarket chains, rather than the single-store outlets that bore the brunt of its earlier conquest of the broader general merchandise sector. Instead, we find that independent grocers actually thrive when Wal-Mart enters, leading to an overall reduction in market concentration. These competitive effects are strongest in larger markets and those into which Wal-Mart expanded most rapidly, suggesting a diminishing role of scale and a greater emphasis on differentiation in this previously mature industry.

Three common techniques for interpretation are described here: first differences, marginal effects and elasticities, and odds ratios. Concepts related to these techniques are also discussed, as well as methods to account for estimation uncertainty. Interpretation of binary logits, ordered logits, multinomial and conditional logits, and mixed discrete choice models such as mixed multinomial logits and random effects logits for panel data are covered in detail. Book excerpt: In this research, we provide a new method to estimate discrete choice models with unobserved heterogeneity that can be used with either cross-sectional or panel data. The method imposes nonparametric assumptions on the systematic subutility functions and on the distributions of the unobservable random vectors and the heterogeneity parameter. The estimators are computationally feasible and strongly consistent. We provide an empirical application of the estimator to a model of store format choice. The key insights from the empirical application are: 1) consumer response to cost and distance contains interactions and non-linear effects which implies that a model without these effects tends to bias the estimated elasticities and heterogeneity distribution and 2) the increase in likelihood for adding non-linearities is similar to the increase in likelihood for adding heterogeneity, and this increase persists as heterogeneity is included in the model.
