This book was released on 2016 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examines the extent to which selected demographic characteristics (nontraditional student, English as a second language [ESL], male student, and first generation student) predict early-program success, successful on-time completion, and NCLEX-RN success in baccalaureate nursing education for a sample of students at a Midwestern university. To determine the relationships among study variables, correlational analysis was used. Logistic regression was utilized to examine the relationship of the predictive variables (nontraditional student, ESL student, male student, and first-generation student) to the outcome variables (early-program success, successful on-time completion, and NCLEX-RN success). In addition, descriptive statistics, including measures of central tendency (mean, median, and mode), variation (standard deviation), and frequency distributions, were utilized to analyze the data collected for five cohorts of students from 2009-2015.

This book was released on 2015 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this retrospective quantitative study was to describe and compare the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN) first-time pass rates of students who participated in an optional NCLEX-RN review course with those who did not among 2012-2014 Associate Degree Nurse (ADN) graduates from a northeastern Minnesota community college. The successful completion of the ADN program at a northeastern Minnesota community college and participation in an optional NCLEX-RN exam review course were the factors used to describe and determine dependence with NCLEX-RN exam first time pass rates. A non-probability convenience sample of 220 ADN graduates was used, and the data from this sample were then analyzed using an open source software called R (R Development Core Team, 2008).The statistical technique used was the Fisher's Exact Test. The research variable was the pass rate of students taking the NCLEX-RN exam. There were no statistically significant findings related to age, ethnicity, cumulative GPA, or gender on the passing rate of the NCLEX-RN exam. The researcher concluded that further research is needed to determine whether other factors including program entrance exam criteria, foundational nursing course grades, the student's first language, or the amount of time between graduation and taking the NCLEX-RN exam affect the outcome.

Book excerpt: As the US population becomes more diverse, schools of nursing are faced with the formidable challenge of graduating diverse groups of competent students who will pass the NCLEX-RN® and serve an equally diverse public in the safest manner possible. Although institutions of higher learning have adopted plans to enhance diversity among nursing graduates, tension is created between these initiatives and the academic rigor required by nursing education. In particular, schools of nursing in diverse urban metropolitan areas face unique challenges educating increasing number of men, minorities, and students for whom English is a second language (ESL). Stanton-Salazar's (2011) Social Capital Framework indicates academic success is impacted by the amount of social capital students bring to the educational setting. Nursing students from urban areas often bring less social capital, thus prompting nurse educators to closely examine and revise pedagogical methods. This study identified and analyzed the predictive power of demographic and academic variables on students' success on the NCLEX-RN® at a large urban university's pre-licensure nursing programs. Linear logistic regression model results indicated GPA is an extraordinarily strong predictor. However, revised logistic regression models excluding GPA amplified the predictive power of the other variables including ESL status and ATITM Comprehensive Predictor Examination score. ATITM emerged as the most robust predictor of success on the NCLEX-RN®, demonstrating even a small increase in ATITM score significantly impacted students' likelihood to pass the NCLEX-RN®. Gender and minority status were not significant predictors of students success on the NCLEX-RN®. Attrition rates for male, minority, and ESL students averaged twice those of females, non-minorities, and native English speakers. Recommendations to promote success for these students included opportunities to enhance social capital, deeper investment in a holistic admissions process, pedagogical innovations, and full integration of ATITM formative and summative strategies into the nursing curriculum. By promoting success for all students, male, minority, and ESL scholars can be viewed not from a perspective of potential failure, but rather from that of rich potential for contributions to the profession of nursing.

Book Synopsis Practices and Programmatic Features of an ADN Program that Produced Graduates from Diverse Backgrounds who Passed the NCLEX-RN by : Jennifer Harrison Siu

This book was released on 2011 with total page 486 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The central issue is that NCLEX-RN standards have been raised requiring nursing graduates to demonstrate greater knowledge on the national licensure examination in order to be licensed. This has ramifications for nursing programs and their ability to sustain a high percentage of graduates from diverse backgrounds who go on to pass the NCLEX as first-time test takers. This study investigated the practices and programmatic features of Sacramento City College's nursing program, a successful program characterized by its history to produce graduates from diverse backgrounds who passed the NCLEX-RN. The findings of this mixed methods study, which used data sources from faculty and graduate surveys, curricula documents, and NCLEX reports, supported observations and published recommendations of best practices noted by nursing education experts. The study also presented factors not commonly found in the research, such as maintaining a rigorous nursing program and high NCLEX passing rates while upholding diversity trends within its student body and the open access policy on a ix community college campus. In conclusion, the study explicitly recognized that the state's investment in nursing education cannot be evaluated by simply examining NCLEX success 0́3 the ultimate return on investment in nursing programs is having graduates practice nursing in California.

Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: The purpose of this quantitative study was to examine the relationship between individual and institutional factors that influence the academic and NCLEX-RN® success of racial/ethnic minority nursing students in an Associate Degree Nursing program. The independent variables were race/ethnicity, nursing course grades (NCG), nursing grade point average (NGPA), HESI E2 exam scores, and financial support/aid (yes/no); and the dependent variables were academic success and NCLEX-RN® success. The study used Marianne Jeffreys' Nursing Undergraduate Retention and Success (NURS) model as the theoretical framework. Data was collected from an existing student database on eight cohorts of (White, Black/African American, & Hispanic) nursing students (N=617) who have or should have already graduated and taken the NCLEX-RN®. Results from statistical analyses revealed significant relationship between race/ethnicity and academic success, but no significant relationship between race/ethnicity and NCLEX-RN® success. Hispanic nursing students had the lowest enrollment rate. Black/African American nursing students had higher attrition rates than the other two racial/ethnic groups. Additional results indicated significant relationship between NCG, NGPA, and HESI E2 mean scores and academic and NCLEX-RN success. Policy recommendations to facilitate the academic success of all (primarily Hispanic & Black/African American) nursing students are provided.

This book was released on 2014 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today's complex healthcare system requires nursing graduates to be prepared to deliver high quality, patient-centered care to a diverse population. Nurse educators must be highly proficient nurses as well as excellent educators who are able to facilitate student learning. There is a paucity of published literature regarding the optimal preparation for nurses entering the faculty role. This retrospective survey study examined the relationship between the educational preparation of nursing faculty and the student outcomes of program pass rates and performance on key components on the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN) in 40 associate degree nursing (ADN) programs in Florida, both public and private/proprietary. The specific components of educational preparation that were included in this study were (a) the highest degree attained; (b) the type of doctoral degree attained (Doctor of Education, Doctor of Philosophy, Doctor of Nursing Practice, or other); and (c) completion of a minimum of nine credits of graduate level education coursework covering topics such as curriculum development, instructional design, assessment and evaluation, and adult learning theories. Other faculty characteristics analyzed were teaching experience, student-to-faculty ratio, and percentage of full-time faculty. All faculty data were grouped by program. Faculty characteristics shown to predict program NCLEX-RN pass rates were faculty completion of graduate level education coursework and years of teaching experience (averaged teaching experience by the full-time faculty group within a program), although faculty completion of education coursework was related to NCLEX-RN pass rates at a significantly higher rate than was found with years of teaching experience. Based on the findings from this study, ADN programs in Florida that employ full-time faculty members who have completed graduate-level education coursework may see positive effects on NCLEX-RN pass rates. Likewise, ADN programs in Florida that increase the average teaching experience of the full-time faculty may see positive effects on NCLEX-RN pass rates.
