Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Common-Sense View of the Books of the Old Testament Rufus phineas stebbins was born at South Wilbraham, Mass., March 3, 1810. He grew up under the discipline of poverty and hard work. By his unaided efforts, - teaching school in the winter, toiling on the farm during vacations, he fitted himself for college and paid his expenses while there, graduating at Amherst in 1834. He had been reared under the influence of Methodism, his mother being a devoted member of that church; and up to the time of his entering college he had hardly known of any other faith. Some work by Dr. Charming which fell into his hands led him to a care ful reading of the Bible with reference to its theological teachings; and the result of a long and patient study was the acceptance of Unitarian views, to the preaching of which he then consecrated his life. What if I told you there was tons of stuff in the Bible that you’ve never heard about? Things like talking donkeys, self-conscious magicians, and kings who think they’re cows. The Bible is a curious book full of deeply flawed people and a God who refuses to give up on them. Don’t believe me? Look for yourself. In these 60 devotions, we examine these unique stories, the circumstances and biblical truth around them, and what they reveal about the heart of God.

Download or read book Cross Vision written by Gregory A. Boyd and published by Fortress Press. This book was released on 2017-08-15 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Renowned pastor-theologian Gregory A. Boyd tackles the BibleÕs biggest dilemma. Ê The Old Testament God of wrath and violence versus the New Testament God of love and peaceÑitÕs a difference that has troubled Christians since the first century. Now, with the sensitivity of a pastor and the intellect of a theologian, Gregory A. Boyd proposes the Òcruciform hermeneutic,Ó a way to read the Old Testament portraits of God through the lens of JesusÕ crucifixion. Ê In Cross Vision, Boyd follows up on his epic and groundbreaking study, The Crucifixion of the Warrior God. He shows how the death and resurrection of Jesus reframes the troubling violence of the Old Testament, how all of Scripture reveals GodÕs self-sacrificial love, and, most importantly, how we can follow JesusÕ example of peace.
