Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Commentary on the Book of Psalms 1. Ungodliness saith to the wicked in the midst of my heart, There is no fear of God before his eyes. 2. For he flattereth himself in his own eyes, until his iniquity be found to be hateful. 3. The words of his month are iniquity and deceit; he hath left of to understand that he may do good. 4. He meditates [or devises] iniquity upon his bed; he setteth himself in a way that is not good; and abhorreth not evil. 1. Ungodliness saith to the wicked in the midst of my heart. Commentators are not agreed as to the interpretation of the first verse. Literally it is, The saying [or speech] of transgression, or rather, Transgression saith to the wicked. But as there is no need to depart from the proper signification of the words, I rather agree with others in supposing that the language of the prophet is to this effect: The malice of the wicked, though seemingly hidden and unknown, speaks aloud in my heart, and I am a sure witness of what it says or suggests. And, first, it is to be observed, that the prophet speaks not of outward faults, but penetrates even to the very source; as if he had said, Although the wicked cloak their malice with wily dissimulation, yet I know it so well that I seem to hear it speaking. It is indeed true, that as the ungodly and profane rush headlong into every kind of wickedness, as if they were never to be called to render up an account of it, the judgment which David here expresses may be formed even from their life; but his language is much more emphatic when he says, that the servants of God openly perceive the depravity of such persons hidden within the heart. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Commentary on the Psalms, Vol. 1 It is justly remarked, however, by Koester, that the suppo sitiou in question by no means requires us to hold that the Psalm is a late production, and probably composed by the col lector himself. The simplicity and freshness which characterize it are against this. That it must have been composed, at any rate, before Jeremiah, is evident from his imitation of it. A more determinate conclusion regarding the time of its composi tion, can only, since the Psalm itself furnishes no data, be de rived from ascertaining its relation to Psalm second. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Commentary on the Book of Psalms But the symphonies which the Church singeth with Christ out of this book are not all a fellowship of suffering. For not only by the Shedding of his blood did Messiah make propitiation for her sins, and destroy her writing of condemnation, and put a new song in her mouth Who is he that condemneth, but also for her hath he purchased the raiment of an everlasting righteousness, and the beauties of holiness, and the Spirit of a perfect Obedience, which, by previous justifying faith, she claimeth as her own, and over which she singeth other symphonies of gladness: I have kept the ways of the Lord, and have not wickedly departed from my God. For all his judgments were before me, and I did not put away his statutes from me. I was upright before him, and I kept myself from mine iniquity. Therefore hath the Lord recompensed me according to my righteous dealing, according to the cleanness of my hands in his eye sight. And in the greatness of her loyal love, how many a song sing eth the daughter of Zion, touching the things that belong unto the King, when her tongue is as the pen of a ready writer: Thou art fairer than the children of men; grace is poured upon thy lips, therefore God hath blessed thee for ever. Bless the Lord, 0 my soul, and forget not all his benefits, who redeemeth thy life from destruction, and crowneth thee with loving kindness, and tender mercies. And with what a brave pulse of glory doth her heart exult toward the accomplishment of Messiah's king dom, and the fulness of his power; when all lands shall call upon his name, and all nations Shall bow before him, and there shall be given to him of Sheba's gold, and his name shall endure for ever, and last like the sun, and men shall be blest in him, and all nations shall call him blessed! Then his people sing in high symphony with their triumphant King, and all-conquering Lord, in whom each one feeleth himself to be a conqueror and a king, seated on his throne, and sharing in his royal sovereignty, Thou hast made me the head of the heathen; a people whom I have not known shall serve me, as soon as they hear Of me they shall obey me. The' strangers shall submit themselves unto me. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Commentary on the Book of Psalms, Vol. 1 Another excellence of this commentary is its practical character. The author does not confine himself to the dry and lifeless detail of mere grammatical praxis, as if he had been commenting on a Greek or Roman classic. He turns all his explanations to practical account, and thus his work exhibits a happy combination of critical and philological remark with practical exposition. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A d104ual Commentary on the Book of Psalms The value, to the devotional student of the Holy Scriptures, of reference to parallel illustrative passages in the same Sacred Writings, has been generally acknowledged by those who have adopted this scriptural method of study. By thus comparing spiritual things with spiritual, under the supplicated teaching of the Holy Spirit of promise, we may trust to be made perfect and complete in all the will of God, and that the word of Christ will dwell in us richly in all wisdom. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Commentary on the Book of Psalms, Vol. 5 The utility of the two tables adverted to is too obvious to require to be dwelt upon. From the former the reader will perceive how completely the inspiration of the psalms is established by new testament authority, and how highly they were appreciated by christ and his apostles, there being no portion of Old Testament Scripture from which they so frequently quoted. The other Table will readily serve as a guide to the selection of such psalms as may be adapted to the doctrines of the Christian system, the duties of the Christian life, or the varied circumstances, whether prosperous or adverse, in which the Christian or the Church of God may be placed. It is a thoroughly heartfelt and intelligent expression of the love to the sanctuary of - ja - hve which yearns towards it out of the distance, and calls all those happy who have the like good fortune to have their home there. The prayer takes the form of an intercession for God's anointed; for the poet is among the followers of David. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Commentary on the Psalms, Vol. 3 The Psalmist prays for help on behalf of the oppressed church, particularly on behalf of Joseph and Benjamin, ver. 1 - 3, and describes, in mournful language, their oppression in ver. 4-7. In ver. 8 - 13, Israel appears under the image of a vine tree, which at first is carefully attended to, and had spread forth luxuriantly, but now 'had become altogether destroyed. In ver. 14 - 19, the Psalmist prays that God would again take this vine tree under his gracious protection. Ver. 1-7 are evidently to be considered as an Introduction; and the individual character of the Psalm is to be found in the figure of the vine tree. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Commentary on the Psalms, Vol. 2 If we draw the superscription into the compass of the Psalm, which we are here peculiarly warranted to do, the meditation will complete itself in the number ten, which again falls into two fives. The prayer and confidence rising on the ground of the Mosaic blessing, is ruled by the number three. The Psalm is as to its subject nearly allied to Ps. Xi. And xiv. With whose introduction that of this holds a close resemblance even in expression. Of any particular occasion we are not to think. The Psalmist speaks for the fearers of God, and in their name. Already does Luther remark in his summaries this is a didactic Psalm. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Plain Commentary on the Book of Psalms, (the Prayer-Book Version, ) Chiefly Founded on the Fathers, Vol. 2: Containing Psalms 73-150 Iris, of course, clear that the meaning which all who read the Psalms, as well as other portions of Holy Scriptures, have first to look to, is that of the words taken in their plain and literal sense. We certainly can make no great progress in the study of God's Word until we have understood its Literal meaning. In the historical books this is generally very plain; but in the poetical and prophetical por tions of the Bible it is much more difficult to dis cover it, because the writers intended that it should be so. It was one of the great points of ancient learning, as it is of modem. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Psalm-Mosaics a Biographical and Historical Commentary on the Psalms But few words of introduction are needed to such a Collection of Notes as the present; it speaks for itself. It was in 1872, when at Lichfield Theological College, that the words of the then Principal, Canon Curteis, first suggested to the writer the idea of collecting, during his readings, such biographical and historical illustrations of the Psalms as are contained in this volume. The chief object in publishing them is the hope that they may be of help to the reader, in the religious life; for most of them testify to the fact that the words of a Psalm, in the days that are gone, have comforted in time of bereavement, and succoured in time of danger - they are still potent to comfort and succour those in similar circumstances to-day. Dean Stanley has truly said: 'The Psalter, by its manifold application and uses in after-times, is a vast palimpsest, written over and over again, illuminated, illustrated by every conceivable incident and emotion of men and nations; battles, wanderings, dangers, escapes, death-beds, obsequies of many ages and countries, rise, or may rise, to our view as we read it.' Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Commentary on the Book of Psalms, Vol. 2 of 3 This Psalm opens with great dignity, and the pro phet speaks as one having authority. He demands an audience, like that which is to be assembled at the last day; having something to deliver, which is universally important and interesting; something which concerns every age, and condition, and nation, under heaven. And we may observe, that although the sound of this Psalm, when first uttered, could be heard only within the confines of J udea, yet the knowledge of it hath since actually been diffused in the Christian church, throughout the world, from the rising to the setting sun. But how few, alas! Have duly attended to the salutary lesson, which it so di vinely teacheth! About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
