Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Colonial Reformer, Vol. 1 of 3 When the past is reviewed, and the clear sad lamp of experience sheds its soft gleam upon the devious track, then are all apparent the scarce shunned precipices, the hidden pitfalls, the bones, of long dead victims. Then can we measure the tender patience with which our guardian angel warned or wooed into safety. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Set in the tumultuous decades of post-revolutionary America, Reluctant Reformer brings to light the long neglected New York lawyer-politician, Nathan Sanford. As a lawyer, Sanford contributed to modern property law. In the United States Senate, he dealt with central banking, struggled against slavery, and supported popular voting for presidential electors. He was a major designer of the program to rationalize the nation's currency. Against a backdrop of European wars and the War of 1812, he capitalized on opportunities for upward social mobility in a period of nation-building and commercial expansion. At the New York State Constitutional Convention of 1821, he fought for universal manhood suffrage. Educated in history and government at Clinton Academy on Long Island and at Yale, and a student at the Litchfield School of Law, Sanford rose quickly to prominence as the federal attorney appointed by President Jefferson to serve all of New York State. Fueled by ambition, he navigated a career among Republican factional leaders—DeWitt Clinton, Aaron Burr, and Martin Van Buren—first in New York City, and then in the state and the nation. In 1824, he ran for vice president on the ticket with Henry Clay. Attuned to his familial ties to eastern Long Island but beyond the bounds of the rural community of his youth, Sanford faced decisions about whom to trust with a militia's gun and a citizen's vote. He could shift from his principles toward political compromise, as in restricting black male suffrage and in the removal of Indians from their ancestral lands. In this book, Sanford is revealed as a wealth-seeking lawyer and officeholder who contributed to the expansion of democratic rights and responsive government in the Early Republic. In doing so, he proved to be a reluctant reformer who deserves a place in our public memory.

And even likewise in all ceremonies and sacraments, he searcheth the significations, and will not serve the visible things. It is as good to him, that the priest say mass in his gown as in his other apparel, if they teach him not somewhat, and that his soul be edified thereby. And as soon will he gape while thou puttest sand as holy salt in his month, if thou shew him no reason thereof. He had as lief be smeared with unhallowed butter as anointed with charmed oil, if his soul be not taught to understand somewhat thereby and so forth. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Little Journeys to the Homes of Great Reformers, Vol. 20 The fourth Wesley of note was Martha, who looked so much like her brother John, that occasionally, in merry mood, she dressed herself in his cassock and surplice, and suddenly appearing before the family deceived them all until she spoke. Martha was the only girl in the brood who was heir to her mother's mind. Had she lived in this age she would have made for herself a career. A contemporary says, She could preach like a man, a remark, I suppose, meant to be complimentary. In one respect she excelled any of the Wesleys - she had a sense of humor that never for sook her. John usually was able to laugh; Charles smiled at rare intervals; and Samuel never. As it was, Martha married and was swallowed by the conven tions, for the times subdue us, and society takes in dividuality captive and binds it hand and foot with green withes. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reginald Hetherege, Vol. 1 of 3 Whether Reginald was anything more worthy of description than the buoy at the Nore our readers must judge for themselves, it is most absolutely certain that he at one time earned the love and respect of all who knew him. He floated, like the great buoy, passively through calm weather and foul weather, some times with the waves rippling pleasantly about him, sometimes with the great northern seas pouring over his head, until the last ship he waited to pilot came safe into port; and then he broke from his moorings, and was towed com fortably into port himself. So much for Goodge's simile. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. She had been meditating on her subject ever since she had heard the evangelist whose words she quoted, and fancied she had thoroughly digested it. She was - or supposed herself - a great thinker as well as a great talker, and she had come to the conclusion that a child in the house was an absolute necessity. I see but one objection to your plan, Lou, ' said Mr. Prettyman, who was some what oi a wag, and as great a talker as his wife. 'suppose he was to turn out a thief, or a murderer, for, you know, we mightn't be sure of his parents, and there's a great talk now-a-days Of heredity, of crime, as they call it; or, if it was a she, perhaps she would elope with the footman, as her mother would probably have been - well.
