Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Collection of the Most Approved Examples of Doorways Some writers suppose, that the Greeks derived many of their customs from the Egyptians, and this opinion seems to acquire force from a practice of that people similar to the one just noticed, many of their temples being approached through long avenues of sphynxes, placed there as guardians of the entrance leading to these superb fanes. But cautious as were the ancients to protect their threshold by every possible precaution from the depredation of the midnight robber or the impertinent intrusion of unwelcome visitors, they were no less anxious to receive their friends and relations with every demonstration of welcome. The hospitable salutation of salve inscribed on the wall, traced in mosaic on the sill itself, or worked on the pavement immediately within the porch, offered a propitious omen to those, whom they held in particular regard. Frequent instances of this custom occur in the Houses of Pompeii, a city, rich in these memorials of the domestic habits of the ancients, and affording the antiquary a fruitful source, from which he may derive a greater intimacy with the common usages of life and a greater insight into the customs of the ancients recorded in their writings, than in any other remains of antiquity. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Door Beautiful One of the most essential points in building hardwood veneer doors is that all moisture be eliminated. Every piece of wood going into the door must be absolutely dry. After having once been dried, this wood must be kept in rooms heated. To a high degree of temperature so that no moisture can re-enter the pores. We have been able to accomplish this in the most satisfactory manner after years of experience and experimenting along scientific lines. After. The wood has been thoroughly prepared, the cores or foundations are built up of narrow strips of pine with edges of hardwood glued together with the very best of veneer glue under powerful hydraulic pressure, thus obtaining a perfect joint. After this the cores are planed to an even thickness, the face veneers are applied and again subjected to hydraulic pressure for a number of hours. The core or center piece is always placed at right angle to the veneers so that swelling, shrinking and checking is impossible. In this way Morgan Company build Perfect Doors and can afford to guarantee every hardwood door they build. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The author puts this book in the best possible context by referring to the ""magisterial and paradoxical Dr. Schumpeter"". A figure in a rare class with John Maynard Keynes, Friedrich von Hayek, and Alfred Marshall, the work of Joseph Schumpeter is equalled only in monumental significance by his personal trials and tribulations. The work is divided into two volumes - the first covering his career in Europe and the second his life and achievements in America.Walt Rostow, in his Foreword, sums up Robert Loring Allen's achievement in biography and intellectual history thus: ""In dealing with Schumpeter's life, Allen exhibits a rare consciousness of the extraordinary complexity and only limited penetrability of the human personality Schumpeter's closely interwoven personal and professional life unfolds, Allen develops without dogmatism a pattern of linkages for the reader to contemplate. In a splendid final passage, he provides a memorable summation.""What makes this enormous effort so successful is the linkage of the personal and the professional, the biographical with the intellectual. Indeed, it is Schumpeter's single-minded determination to explain within a single, formal theory, the dynamics of capitalism that bridges the gap in space, time, and personality. To his books The Theory of Economic Development, and Capitalism, Socialism and Democracy, both published by Transaction, is now added the specific contexts in which these and his other works were written. The author of this biography, like the subject himself, is a masterful student of the craft of economics, and its place within the larger social science contexts that Schumpeter worked. In this work, we are introduced into the main current of European and American social science alike. The title of the book, Opening Doors, derives from Schumpeter's life long aim to appeal to inquiring minds to move through such doors in an effort to create the social science of the"

Spanning the breadth of Islamic civilization from Morocco to Indonesia, this book demonstrates how Muslims have used the literary and visual arts in all their richness and diversity to communicate religious values. Each of the seven chapters opens a "door" that leads progressively closer to the very heart of Islam, from the foundational revelation in the Qur'an to the transcendent experience of the Sufi mystics. However, unlike most studies of Islam, which see spirituality as the concern of a minority of mystical seekers, Seven Doors demonstrates its central role in every aspect of the Islamic tradition.

This book was released on 2006-07-19 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Home Office Ministers hold regular meetings with ministers of the interior of the other five largest EU States. The last such meeting was in Heiligendamm in March 2006 and covered topics such as their joint response to terrorism, illegal immigration and organised crime. Decisions were reached, which if taken forward, would significantly change current EU thinking and declared Government policy. Yet little information was released about the meeting and the Home Office issued no press notice. This report looks at the outcomes of the meeting and in particular the implications of the proposals for data sharing. The Committee is concerned that the ministers want to press forward with the principle of availability and disregard issues of data protection. They are worried about the erosion of civil rights.
