From the delivery of essential drugs, the reduction in teacher absenteeism, the containment of illegal logging, the construction of roads, the provision of water andelectricity, the international trade in oil and gas, the conduct of public budgeting and procurement, and the management of public revenues, corruption shows its many faces. 'The Many Faces of Corruption' attempts to bring greater clarity to the often murky manifestations of this virulent and debilitating social disease. It explores the use of prototype road maps to identify corruption vulnerabilities, suggests corresponding 'warning signals,' and proposes operationally useful remedial measures in each of several selected sectors and for a selected sampleof cross cutting public sector functions that are particularlyprone to corruption and that are critical to sector performance.Numerous technical experts have come together in this effort to develop an operationally useful approach to diagnosing and tackling corruption. 'The Many Faces of Corruption' is an invaluable reference for policymakers, practitioners, andresearchers engaged in the business of development.

Book Synopsis The Poetic Conventions of Tina Sambal by : Hella Eleonore Goschnick
Download or read book The Poetic Conventions of Tina Sambal written by Hella Eleonore Goschnick and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 478 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: this study, an analysis of poetry in Tina Sambal, a Philippine language spoken by about 70,000 persons in northern Zambales province, looks at the characteristics of the different poetic genres and poetic conventions followed in writing songs and poems. Primary emphasis is on phonological restrictions, grammatical liberties, and semantic embellishments. The first chapter describes Tina Sambal poetic genres and their use, focusing on the changing use of songs and poems, 11 specific song types (religious poetry, hortatory songs, life-story songs, entertaining songs, comical songs, compositions for special occasions, poems, serenading and caroling songs, courting songs, love letters, and sad love songs), functions of Tina Sambal songs and poems, traditional singing customs, and comparison with other Philippine languages. The second chapter examines the Tina Sambal poetic conventions, and the third chapter offers a brief conclusion. A separate section--and the longest in the book--consists of a "Chrestomathy" containing typical Tina Sambal poems and songs and an excerpt from one Tina Sambal Passion, each with an introduction and free translation, grouped according to genre. Appended materials include notes on typical features of Tina Sambal orthography and grammar; terms relating to poetry and song; esoteric words used; an index of authors, singers, and contributors; transcriptions of song melodies; and a list of available recorded songs. A glossary of technical terms and a list of references are also included. (MSE)
Book Synopsis The Routledge Handbook of Critical Resource Geography by : Matthew Himley
Download or read book The Routledge Handbook of Critical Resource Geography written by Matthew Himley and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-07-13 with total page 494 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Handbook provides an essential guide to the study of resources and their role in socio-environmental change. With original contributions from more than 60 authors with expertise in a wide range of resource types and world regions, it offers a toolkit of conceptual and methodological approaches for documenting, analyzing, and reimagining resources and the worlds with which they are entangled. The volume has an introduction and four thematic sections. The introductory chapter outlines key trajectories for thinking critically with and about resources. Chapters in Section I, "(Un)knowing resources," offer distinct epistemological entry points and approaches for studying resources. Chapters in Section II, "(Un)knowing resource systems," examine the components and logics of the capitalist systems through which resources are made, circulated, consumed, and disposed of, while chapters in Section III, "Doing critical resource geography: Methods, advocacy, and teaching," focus on the practices of critical resource scholarship, exploring the opportunities and challenges of carrying out engaged forms of research and pedagogy. Chapters in Section IV, "Resource-making/world-making," use case studies to illustrate how things are made into resources and how these processes of resource-making transform socio-environmental life. This vibrant and diverse critical resource scholarship provides an indispensable reference point for researchers, students, and practitioners interested in understanding how resources matter to the world and to the systems, conflicts, and debates that make and remake it.

Book excerpt: This authored dictionary presents a unique glossary of paleontological terms, taxa, localities, and concepts, with focus on the most significant orders, genera, and species in terms of historical turning points such as mass extinctions. The book is an accurate and up-to-date collection of the most important paleontological terms and taxa, and may be used as a resource by students, researchers, libraries, and museums. Though useful to many in professional and academic settings, the book is also aimed at general readers of scientific literature who may enjoy the material without a background in paleontology. While there are many current resources on the subject, few fully encapsulate an accurate representation of the paleontological lexicon. This book attempts to compile such a representation in a moderately comprehensive manner, and includes a list of the most important monographs and articles that have been consulted to put together this essential work.
