Book Synopsis Print Culture in Early Modern France by : Carl Goldstein
Download or read book Print Culture in Early Modern France written by Carl Goldstein and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2012-02-13 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, Carl Goldstein examines the print culture of seventeenth-century France through a study of the career of Abraham Bosse, a well-known printmaker, book illustrator, and author of books and pamphlets on a variety of technical subjects. The consummate print professional, Bosse persistently explored the endless possibilities of print – single-sheet prints combining text and image, book illustration, broadsides, placards, almanacs, theses, and pamphlets. Bosse had a profound understanding of print technology as a fundamental agent of change. Unlike previous studies, which have largely focused on the printed word, this book demonstrates the extent to which the contributions of an individual printmaker and the visual image are fundamental to understanding the nature and development of early modern print culture.

Download or read book Rembrandt written by Amy Golahny and published by Brill's Studies in Intellectua. This book was released on 2020 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Rembrandt: Studies in his Varied Approaches to Italian Art explores his engagement with imagery by Italian masters. His references fall into three categories: pragmatic adaptations, critical commentary, and conceptual rivalry. These are not mutually exclusive but provide a strategy for discussion. This study also discusses Dutch artists' attitudes toward traveling south, surveys contemporary literature praising and/or criticizing Rembrandt, and examines his art collection and how he used it. It includes an examination of the vocabulary used by Italians to describe Rembrandt's art, with a focus on the patron Don Antonio Ruffo, and closes by considering the reception of his works by Italian artists"--
Download or read book The Four Horsemen written by Cathy Leahy and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 87 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Europe experienced great turmoil between the fifteenth and seventeenth centuries. Bitter religious conflicts, war and other disasters such as plague and famine generated deep anxieties and were increasingly read as divine punishments or warnings that the Last Days were imminent. Artists gave expression to these fears in a range of extraordinary images that are analysed in depth in this publication. Illustrations of the Apocalypse, as well as images of skeletons personifying Death, and of physically deformed creatures, extreme natural phenomena and diabolical witches were all manifestations of the sense of impending social and religious crisis. Lavishly illustrated with works by artists including Albrecht Drer, Jacques de Gheyn II and Stefano della Bella, The Four Horsemen: Apocalypse, Death and Disaster provides a fascinating insight into the art, culture and turbulent times in later medieval, Renaissance and early modern Europe.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Once considered the golden age of French printmaking, Louis XIV’s reign saw Paris become a powerhouse of print production. During this time, the king aimed to make fine and decorative arts into signs of French taste and skill and, by extension, into markers of his imperialist glory. Prints were ideal for achieving these goals; reproducible and transportable, they fueled the sophisticated propaganda machine circulating images of Louis as both a man of war and a man of culture. This richly illustrated catalogue features more than one hundred prints from the Getty Research Institute and the Bibliothèque nationale de France in Paris, whose print collection Louis XIV established in 1667. An esteemed international group of contributors investigates the ways that cultural policies affected printmaking; explains what constitutes a print; describes how one became a printmaker; studies how prints were collected; and considers their reception in the ensuing centuries. A Kingdom of Images is published to coincide with an exhibition on view at the Getty Research Institute from June 18 through September 6, 2015, and at the Bibliothèque nationale de France in Paris from November 2, 2015, through January 31, 2016.

Book Synopsis Trilogy about Several Urban View and Landscape Prints by : M. Rosa Vives
Download or read book Trilogy about Several Urban View and Landscape Prints written by M. Rosa Vives and published by Edicions Universitat Barcelona. This book was released on 2021-10-25 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Trilogy about Several Urban View and Landscape Prints presents three essays dedicated to the specific observation of prints, by great artists such as Canaletto, Goya, Hokusai and Picasso, whose main theme is the representation of outdoor space: landscapes and urban views. M. Rosa Vives studies the contextualisation of these prints and their creative and iconographic links with tradition, and with other artists and creative media. The works remind us that engraving has been, and continues to be, an artistic medium with its own language, a particular technology, and a sensorial form of expression and communication. They also recall how, before the advent of photography, engraving was a major force behind the spreading of images and culture.
