Book excerpt: The Student Support Service Program is one of five federally funded programs under the Trio auspice of the U.S. Department of Education. Trio programs are designed to assist people in their efforts to pursue postsecondary education. Student Support Service (SSS) programs are specifically designed to improve grade point averages, retention rates, and graduation rates of low-income individuals, first-generation college students, and students with certified disabilities. Participants in this study were divided into two groups: one group participated in the SSS program and the other group didn't. The two groups shared commonalities regarding their identification as first-generation college students classified as low income and/or possessing a certified disability. Both groups were given the Assessment of Skills for Successful Entry and Transfer Short Battery of Tests (ASSET) in reading, writing, and numerical skills in the fall semester of 2004. There was not a statistical difference in the differences of mean scores for SSS participants when compared to nonparticipants, based on ASSET scores in writing, reading, and numerical skills. These data showed that SSS participants and nonparticipants had similar academic aptitude before participation or nonparticipation in the SSS program. Statistical data indicated that SSS participants achieved higher grade point averages and had higher rates of graduation than did nonparticipants. SSS participants were more likely to be retained at the institution than were nonparticipants. An opinionaire revealed that there were statistically significant differences in SSS participants' and nonparticipants' perceptions of the effectiveness of support services.

Book excerpt: Abstract: The purpose of this study was to explore the role of Student Support Services (SSS) in encouraging student involvement and its impact on student perceptions and academic experiences in three technical colleges in upstate South Carolina. By examining Alexander Astin's theory of student involvement in the services provided by the program, a better understanding of the existing functions of SSS may be obtained. The study may offer information to increase knowledge and awareness about the college experience for a diverse group of college students. It is hoped that the study will help to better understand unique experiences of SSS participants and how to create better ways of meeting their needs. In order to explore the role of SSS qualitative methods were employed to conduct this research within the population of three Student Support Service programs housed in South Carolina's upstate technical colleges. Focus groups were conducted in the spring of 2009 with a total of 100 students. Transcripts of the focus groups were thematically analyzed for this study. Findings revealed evidence that supports Astin's student involvement theory and Tinto's student retention model and the impact that the SSS Program has on participant student involvement, student perceptions and academic experiences. The impact of involvement is multifaceted because it influences the program participants' certainty of choice of major, helped focus students on attainment of their goals and careers, willingness to stay in school, and improved overall academic experiences. In terms of academic experiences, program participants reported high levels of satisfaction with their grade point averages, advising services, improved test scores, cultural enrichment, transferability, confidence, and overall program experiences. In terms of barriers to student success that were discussed, students were much more likely to discuss barriers that were outside of their control, such as the lack of facility space. Results of this study may contribute to the existing research concerning student involvement in Student Support Services. The findings may be used to help improve services rendered and provide much needed high quality educational programming for academically disadvantaged students. The results may contribute to the understanding of how student perceptions and experiences may impact future policies as well as the restructuring of other academic support programs based on student involvement. This research may also help analyze and identify best practices of upstate South Carolina's Student Support Services program which may be used to benchmark evaluations to assess services provided and program effectiveness.

Book excerpt: First-generation and nontraditional students represent significant segments of the undergraduate population in the United States, but graduation rates for both groups lag despite extensive outreach efforts. This study utilized a mixed-methods design to examine the influence of both characteristics on student experience. The study applied McClusky's (1963, 1971) margin in life theory to first-generation students in a TRIO Student Support Services program. The purpose of the study was to determine differences between first-generation student's margin in life scores based on traditional or nontraditional status, gender, age, employment, relationship status, and TRIO participation level; and to identify common load and power variables of first-generation students and how the TRIO program contributed to their power. Quantitative results indicated limited differences in margin in life scores, with the exception of higher parenting power scores among nontraditional versus traditional students, and higher health power scores among somewhat active students versus slightly active students. Qualitative results revealed family as both a load and power variable for first-generation students and that TRIO SSS program is relevant to both traditional and nontraditional first-generation students even when power and load variables differ.

Book excerpt: Brief Literature Review The literature review explored the effects of undergraduate student support services and activities on the retention and academic success of low-income and first-generation college students. Topics from demographics, disadvantages, and strengths inherent to low-income and first-generation college students to institutional and social barriers as well as strengths from lessons learned and research already done on TRIO programs were studied. Statement of the Problem As budgets shrink the talk of accountability as well as the need for programs to reach ever-increasing levels of efficacy, expand. On the national level TRIO programs have proven success, however, it is just as important to demonstrate whether or not a program is also achieving significant success at the campus it is situated in. If a TRIO Student Support Service (SSS) program fails to establish itself, as a valid student support service for the campus, the need for it would likely be called into question. Worse yet, the opportunity to solidify itself as model college retention program could be lost and at higher risk is that programs ability to raise awareness and acceptance of TRIO programs, funding for which is held at the whim of our politicians on Capitol Hill. Methodology The study is quantitative and relies on descriptive statistics and statistical analysis of the data gathered. The statistical tools used include a two-tailed T test, and a measure of linear correlation. The statistical analysis of the data was used to determine if membership in the UC Davis TRIO SSS program has an impact, positive or negative, on TRIO SSS participant GPA and retention rates through the seventh quarter. Conclusions and Recommendations The study concluded that participation in the UC Davis TRIO SSS program does have a significant and positive impact on student retention/persistence rates through the seventh term of enrollment at UC Davis. In exploring the GPA variable the study revealed justification for services rendered as well as evidence of a possible positive impact on GPA. Recommendations range from ways to refine the current study to areas of further research broken down by sex, ethnicity, region, and other demographics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the final report of the National Evaluation of Student Support Services (SSS). SSS is one of eight federally funded grant programs that are administered as part of the Federal TRIO Programs within the U.S. Department of Education (ED). The SSS program, in particular, focuses on students while they are enrolled in college. In general, SSS provides the most services to first-year college students, though it does also provide services in later years. The purpose of the study was to estimate the effects of SSS on the outcomes of the student participants. The full report discusses five academic outcomes. For brevity, this summary focuses only on the key outcomes: (1)retention in college; (2) transfers from two-year to four-year institutions; and (3) degree completion. The study used a variety of statistical methodologies to estimate the effects of participating in the SSS program as a college freshman (the only year for which it was possible to collect program participation data) and also the more general effect of receiving supplemental services during college. The major finding is that analytic models that account for differences in service levels generally showed positive and statistically significant effects. Participation in SSS projects as measured by the amount of services received during the freshman year is associated with moderate increases on the key measures of college retention and degree completion but neither increases nor decreases student transfers from two-year to four-year institutions and neither increases nor decreases the outcomes on some of the key measures in the HLM models. Although these models controlled for student demographics and, whenever possible, prior achievement, one limitation of this model is the potential selection bias of participants who received more services. Models that measure supplemental services regardless of whether they were offered by the SSS project or were offered by some other service provider on campus are associated with positive and statistically significant effects on all outcome measures of retention, transfers from two-year to four-year institutions, and degree completion. In addition this report includes analyses that simply consider whether or not the student was classified as being in SSS as a college freshman, although this comparison was considered of limited validity given the structure of SSS grants. A major limitation of this analysis is that it does not account for the level of service received by SSS participants; nor does it account for the fact that comparison students may have received similar services that were not funded by the federal SSS program. This measure did not show any effect from participating in SSS as a college freshman. Appended are: (1) Detailed Tables; and (2) Methodology. (Contains 51 exhibits and 41 footnotes.).

Book excerpt: This study examined the experiences of first-generation, economically disadvantaged, and disabled students' utilization of TRIO Student Support Services and their perceptions related to factors associated with the services. The populace studied were Mexican-Americans, a subgroup of the Latin@ population as it is the fastest growing racial/ethnic minority group in the United States totaling approximately 12.5% of the nation and expected to almost double to 24% by 2050 (U.S. Census Bureau, 2000). Due to the abundance of Latin@s enrolling at community colleges (Fry, 2002; Tierney, 2005), it is important to do individualized studies on student experiences on their perspective of college interventions as a means to find ways to retain higher numbers of students, leading to higher graduation and transfer rates. Using a qualitative, multiple case study approach, the researcher explored a border, rural community college. Social capital was used as the theoretical framework. Six, Mexican-American students served as the participants. The data collection methods were through semi-structured interviews over the course of the summer semester of 2013 at a Hispanic-Serving institution. The expected results were that students' perceptions would validate the necessity for programs such as TRIO Student Support Services to serve as a tool for retention and completion at the two-year college or transferring to a university and completing.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this qualitative narrative inquiry was to determine if, and to what extent, student support services are related to the persistence of at-risk students enrolled in a community college on Long Island, New York. The theoretical foundation for the current study was Tinto’s (1993) integration framework. The researcher sought to answer questions of to what extent student support services are related to persistence into a second year as well as to what extent student support services offered at the community college are a direct result to academic success. The sample was 10 students who were enrolled in the student support service program within one New York Community college. The researcher conducted interviews with the participants utilizing open ended questions, lending to descriptions from the participants point of view, of their experiences of the student support service department. The study results indicated the support services made a difference in college readiness. The results supported the program had a positive impact on student persistence among the participants from one semester to the next and had a positive impact on retention of the at-risk student. Additional research is needed to illuminate student characteristics that are considered influential in understanding student persistence in community college.

Book excerpt: Abstract: This study examined the role of a federally funded, TRIO Student Support Services (SSS) program designed to increase the retention and persistence of first-generation, low income students at a large, public university. While there is ample research focusing on the effectiveness of the SSS programs, there are few qualitative studies presenting the student participants' perspective about their experiences with the services provided. The participants (n =20) in this study were divided into two groups: 10 students who had participated in a 5 week, summer bridge program, and 10 students with similar characteristics but who did not actively participate in the SSS program. Findings suggested that from the perspective of the first-generation and low-income college students in this study, support programs assisted them with finding a community on campus, offered validating experiences that fostered involvement, and promoted a sense of belonging that encouraged retention and persistence.
