Book excerpt: I feel very honoured to have been asked to write a brief foreword for this book on QRD-RLS Adaptive Filtering–asubjectwhichhas been close to my heart for many years. The book is well written and very timely – I look forward personally to seeing it in print. The editor is to be congratulated on assembling such a highly esteemed team of contributing authors able to span the broad range of topics and concepts which underpin this subject. In many respects, and for reasons well expounded by the authors, the LMS al- rithm has reigned supreme since its inception, as the algorithm of choice for prac- cal applications of adaptive ltering. However, as a result of the relentless advances in electronic technology, the demand for stable and ef cient RLS algorithms is growing rapidly – not just because the higher computational load is no longer such a serious barrier, but also because the technological pull has grown much stronger in the modern commercial world of 3G mobile communications, cognitive radio, high speed imagery, and so on.

Book excerpt: An important working resource for engineers and researchers involved in the design, development, and implementation of signal processing systems The last decade has seen a rapid expansion of the use of field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) for a wide range of applications beyond traditional digital signal processing (DSP) systems. Written by a team of experts working at the leading edge of FPGA research and development, this second edition of FPGA-based Implementation of Signal Processing Systems has been extensively updated and revised to reflect the latest iterations of FPGA theory, applications, and technology. Written from a system-level perspective, it features expert discussions of contemporary methods and tools used in the design, optimization and implementation of DSP systems using programmable FPGA hardware. And it provides a wealth of practical insights—along with illustrative case studies and timely real-world examples—of critical concern to engineers working in the design and development of DSP systems for radio, telecommunications, audio-visual, and security applications, as well as bioinformatics, Big Data applications, and more. Inside you will find up-to-date coverage of: FPGA solutions for Big Data Applications, especially as they apply to huge data sets The use of ARM processors in FPGAs and the transfer of FPGAs towards heterogeneous computing platforms The evolution of High Level Synthesis tools—including new sections on Xilinx's HLS Vivado tool flow and Altera's OpenCL approach Developments in Graphical Processing Units (GPUs), which are rapidly replacing more traditional DSP systems FPGA-based Implementation of Signal Processing Systems, 2nd Edition is an indispensable guide for engineers and researchers involved in the design and development of both traditional and cutting-edge data and signal processing systems. This volume provides the reader with a comprehensive up-to-date look at recent works describing new innovative developments of fuzzy hardware. An important research trend is the design of improved fuzzy hardware. There is an increasing interest in both analog and digital implementations of fuzzy controllers in particular and fuzzy systems in general. Specialized analog and digital VLSI implementations of fuzzy systems, in the form of dedicated architectures, aim at the highest implementation efficiency. This particular efficiency is asserted in terms of processing speed and silicon utilization. Processing speed in particular has caught the attention of developers of fuzzy hardware and researchers in the field. The volume includes detailed material on a variety of fuzzy hardware related topics such as: Historical review of fuzzy hardware research Fuzzy hardware based on encoded trapezoids Pulse stream techniques for fuzzy hardware Hardware realization of fuzzy neural networks Design of analog neuro-fuzzy systems in CMOS digital technologies Fuzzy controller synthesis method Automatic design of digital and analog neuro-fuzzy controllers Electronic implementation of complex controllers Silicon compilation of fuzzy hardware systems Digital fuzzy hardware processing Parallel processor architecture for real-time fuzzy applications Fuzzy cellular systems Fuzzy Hardware: Architectures and Applications is a technical reference book for researchers, engineers and scientists interested in fuzzy systems in general and in building fuzzy systems in particular.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this memorandum we show how the method of QR decomposition (QRD) may be applied to the adaptive filtering and beamforming problems. QR decomposition is a form of orthogonal triangularisation which is particularly useful in least squares computations and forms the basis of some very stable numerical algorithms. When applied to the problem of narrowband adaptive beamforming where the data matrix, in general, has no special structure, this technique leads to an architecture which can carry out the required computations in parallel using a triangular array of relatively simple processing elements. The problem of an adaptive time series filter is also considered. Here the data vectors exhibit a simple time-shift invariance and the corresponding data matrix is of Toeplitz structure. In this case, the triangular processor array is known to be very inefficient. Instead, it is shown how the Toeplitz structure may be used to reduce the computational complexity of the QR decomposition technique. The resulting orthogonal least squares lattice and 'fast Kalman' algorithms may be implemented using far fewer processing elements. These 'fast' QRD algorithms are very similar to the more conventional ones but, in general, are found to have superior numerical properties. A narrow-band beamformer is essentially a spatial filter and the corresponding adaptive beam-forming problem may be formulated in terms of least squares minimisation. A fundamental structure in least squares minimisation problems is an adaptive linear combiner. This may be applied directly to the problem of narrowband adaptive beamforming, resulting in the so-called generalised sidelobe canceller.
