Book excerpt: This collection of papers seeks to bridge the divide between English and French Canada by bringing to light the distinctive viewpoints of those two sides regarding historical events. It chronicles 34 events that have marked political relations between the two linguistic communities from the arrival of the British in 1759 through to the 1995 Quebec referendum. Each event is summarized from the viewpoint of both Anglophones and Francophones. Chapter 1 covers early events including the British conquest, the 1830s rebellions, Confederation, and the hanging of Louis Riel. Chapter 2 covers the making of the welfare state, including unemployment insurance, tax rental agreements, pension plans, and health insurance. Chapter 3 covers Canadian identity events such as creation of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, adoption of a new flag, and bilingualism & multiculturalism policies. Chapter 4 covers events in Quebec since the Quiet Revolution, including the DeGaulle visit in 1967, the October 1970 crisis, Quebec language laws, and the 1982 patriation of the Constitution. Chapter 5 covers economic debates, including the Churchill Falls power contract and the Canada-US Free Trade Agreement. The final chapter is entitled "Failed reconciliation" and includes papers on the Meech Lake Accord, the 1990 crisis at Oka, and the Charlottetown accord of 1992. Includes index.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "There is an urgent need at the heart of linguistic theorising to take account of bi- and multilingual perspectives. In the field of language planning, issues of bilingualism are often perceived through monolingual filters and resolved by monolingual responses. In this volume issues of monolingualism, multilingualism and identity are addressed directly in detailed studies of Canada and Spain." "John Edwards and Charlotte Hoffmann are both well-known authorities on bilingualism and problems associated with language in multilingual societies. In this book they provide state of the art articles on Spain and Canada. Their insights are useful in a period of evolution in both these countries." "After each of the articles, which were presented in a seminar series, there is a transcript of the debate which followed. The invited audiences are all scholars working on the area or in allied fields."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. All Rights Reserved

Download or read book Debts to Pay written by John F. Conway and published by James Lorimer & Company. This book was released on 2004-04-01 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the resignation of Lucien Bouchard and Jean Charest's resounding win in the recent provincial election, many in English Canada have come to believe that Quebec separatism has finally been defeated. But polls show that sovereignty is still strongly supported by many Quebeckers, and by young people in particular. This new edition of Debts to Pay, a book dealing with Quebec/Canada relations, offers a fresh perspective on the recent changes in Quebec. Saskatchewan-based sociologist and historian John Conway investigates the early days of Jean Charest's government and looks ahead to the effect that Paul Martin's ascension in Ottawa could have on Canada's constitutional struggles. Conway attempts to understand Quebec's aspirations by understanding its history. Through a discussion of relations between Quebec and Canada in the past and present, he explores the division of power between the two societies and provides insights into the source of Quebec's grievances. Debts to Pay offers insight into the bitter and longstanding rift that still remains a threat to the integrity of the Canadian nation.
