Book excerpt: In 1801, the United Kingdom was a semi-confessional State, and the national established Churches of England, Ireland and Scotland were vital to the constitution. They expressed the religious conscience of the State and served as guardians of the faith. Through their parish structures, they provided religious and moral instruction, and rituals for common living. This book explores the struggle to strengthen the influence of the national Churches in the first half of the nineteenth century. For many, the national Churches would help form the United Kingdom into a single Protestant nation-state, with shared beliefs, values and a sense of national mission. Between 1801 and 1825, the State invested heavily in the national Churches. But during the 1830s the growth of Catholic nationalism in Ireland and the emergence of liberalism in Britain thwarted the efforts to unify the nation around the established Churches. Within the national Churches themselves, moreover, voices began calling for independence from the State connection - leading to the Oxford Movement in England and the Disruption of the Church of Scotland.

Book excerpt: The nineteenth century has often been termed a "revolutionary age" on account of the rapid and radical changes which took place in industry and transport, housing and public health, science and technology, education and social life. Religion also played an important part in this revolutionary age. In particular evangelical Christianity shaped the Victorian years. From Parliament where they were represented by William Wilberforce, the Clapham Sect, Lord Shaftesbury and an increasing number of bishops, right down to the poor on whose behalf they campaigned unceasingly, evangelicals began to influence every level of society.Despite the significance of this age for evangelical Anglicans, surprisingly little has been written. Evangelical Anglicans in a Revolutionary Age seeks to restore the balance. Based on a wide range of primary sources—sermons, tracts, private correspondence, newspapers, and journals—Nigel Scotland presents an extensive study of life in this era. Evangelical Anglicans and social action, theology, education, culture, politics, and mission are dealt with. Particular attention is also given to prominent individuals such as Charles Simeon, John Sumner, Spencer Perceval, and Josephine Butler in this extensive study that celebrates the rising number of Evangelical Anglicans in the revolutionary age.

Book excerpt: First published in 2006. The reform of the Church of England in the first half of the nineteenth century was moulded considerably by the same pressures of industrialization, urbanization, and population growth that rapidly altered English society adn its institutions as a whole. The present work examines the responses of the episcopal leadership of the Church of England and Wales to the transformation of teh soceity to which they ministered. It considers primarily their social ideas and policies from teh decade preceding the French Revolution to the middle of the nineteenth century: from the period when a few bishops began to worry abotu the effectiveness of their abuse-ridden Church to the time when teh established Church, ecclesiastically reformed and spiritually revitalized, looked forward to evangelizing the multitudes who peopled the new age. The study concentrates on the attitudes and policies of those prelates installed in the years before 1783, between 1783 and 1812, between 1812 and 1830, and finally between 1830 and 1852. Professor Soloway also examines their social connections, showing the predominantly aristocratic nature of the Church's leadership in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. He emphasises the importance of the role of these men in guiding, administering and reforming the established Church in a period of unprecedented economic and social change.
