This book was released on 2016-03-03 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Singing the Body Electric explores the relationship between the human voice and technology, offering startling insights into the ways in which technological mediation affects our understanding of the voice, and more generally, the human body. From the phonautograph to magnetic tape and now to digital sampling, Miriama Young visits particular musical and literary works that define a century-and-a-half of recorded sound. She discusses the way in which the human voice is captured, transformed or synthesised through technology. This includes the sampled voice, the mechanical voice, the technologically modified voice, the pliable voice of the digital era, and the phenomenon by which humans mimic the sounding traits of the machine. The book draws from key electro-vocal works spanning a range of genres - from Luciano Berio's Thema: Omaggio a Joyce to Radiohead, from Alvin Lucier's I Am Sitting in a Room, to Björk, and from Pierre Henry's Variations on a Door and a Sigh to Christian Marclay's Maria Callas. In essence, this book transcends time and musical style to reflect on the way in which the machine transforms our experience of the voice. The chapters are interpolated by conversations with five composers who work creatively with the voice and technology: Trevor Wishart, Katharine Norman, Paul Lansky, Eduardo Miranda and Bora Yoon. This book is an interdisciplinary enterprise that combines music aesthetics and musical analysis with literature and philosophy.

Book excerpt: By turns heartbreaking, hilarious, and utterly human, The House of God is a mesmerizing and provocative novel about what it really takes to become a doctor. “The raunchy, troubling, and hilarious novel that turned into a cult phenomenon. Singularly compelling…brutally honest.”—The New York Times Struggling with grueling hours and sudden life-and-death responsibilities, Basch and his colleagues, under the leadership of their rule-breaking senior resident known only as the Fat Man, must learn not only how to be fine doctors but, eventually, good human beings. A phenomenon ever since it was published, The House of God was the first unvarnished, unglorified, and uncensored portrait of what training to become a doctor is truly like, in all its terror, exhaustion and black comedy. With more than two million copies sold worldwide, it has been hailed as one of the most important medical novels ever written. With an introduction by John Updike

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author's goal is to help people lose excess weight while eating Mediterranean-style, leading to better health and longevity. The traditional Mediterranean diet is rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, nuts, olive oil, fish, judicious amounts of wine, with minimal saturated fats (e.g, beef and pork). Scientists in the mid-20th century found that this diet was associated with longer life and less chronic disease. Over the last 5 years, nutrition researchers have identified which components of the Mediterranean diet, and in what amounts, lead to the observed health and longevity benefits. Dr. Steve Parker (M.D.), enhances the traditional Mediterranean diet by incorporating these latest scientific breakthroughs. The author reviews nutrition, psychological issues, and the consequences of overweight. Then, four different calorie-level eating plans are laid out. An individual's recommended caloric intake is determined by sex and weight. The eating plans approximate the traditional Mediterranean diet. Dieters choose from an extensive list of readily available foods. Easy recipes are provided but are optional. Dr. Parker, a medical school professor with 24 years¿ clinical experience, also emphasizes the importance of exercise for prevention of diseases such as cancer, diabetes, dementia, and heart attacks. A chapter is devoted to adaptation of the program by people with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Later chapters discuss weight-loss surgery and weight-loss pills and nutritional supplements. The final chapter discusses prevention of weight regain. The appendix has a recommended reading list (bibliography), list of helpful Internet resources, and scientific journal references. An index is provided.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Social Order/Mental Disorder represents a provocative and exciting exploration of social response to madness in England and the United States from the eighteenth through the twentieth centuries. Scull, who is well-known for his previous work in this area, examines a range of issues, including the changing social meanings of madness, the emergence and consolidation of the psychiatric profession, the often troubled relationship between psychiatry and the law, the linkages between sex and madness, and the constitution, character, and collapse of the asylum as our standard response to the problems posed by mental disorder. This book is emphatically not part of the venerable tradition of hagiography that has celebrated psychiatric history as a long struggle in which the steady application of rational-scientific principles has produced irregular but unmistakable evidence of progress toward humane treatments for the mentally ill. In fact, Scull contends that traditional mental hospitals, for much of their existence, resembled cemeteries for the still breathing, medical hubris having at times served to license dangerous, mutilating, even life-threatening experiments on the dead souls confined therein. He argues that only the sociologically blind would deny that psychiatrists are deeply involved in the definition and identification of what constitutes madness in our world – hence, claims that mental illness is a purely naturalistic category, somehow devoid of contamination by the social, are taken to be patently absurd. Scull points out, however, that the commitment to examine psychiatry and its ministrations with a critical eye by no means entails the romantic idea that the problems it deals with are purely the invention of the professional mind, or the Manichean notion that all psychiatric interventions are malevolent and ill-conceived. It is the task of unromantic criticism that is attempted in this book.

Book excerpt: The novel starts with some Canadiana and then goes from birth through some retail, medical school, and the internship of a young man and some related adventures he has had: fights, erotica, events in medical practice, and then what happened on the day Ms. Libby Zion died (March 5, 1984)that was when many teachers and professors of medicine and surgery said that American medicine, as they knew it, had changed forever. And there are a couple of wars. There is also all the medical/surgical activities: CPR, malpractice, triage, and acuity. The way the ER should be run and much more are all updated to 2018. Through aphorisms, experts in various fields give running commentaries, and while much of a medicos (medical student/intern/young doctor) experience is described, the book comes neither with an MD nor a fellowship in surgery!

Book excerpt: New York Times bestselling author and neuroscientist Daniel J. Levitin shifts his keen insights from your brain on music to your brain in a sea of details. The information age is drowning us with an unprecedented deluge of data. At the same time, we’re expected to make more—and faster—decisions about our lives than ever before. No wonder, then, that the average American reports frequently losing car keys or reading glasses, missing appointments, and feeling worn out by the effort required just to keep up. But somehow some people become quite accomplished at managing information flow. In The Organized Mind, Daniel J. Levitin, PhD, uses the latest brain science to demonstrate how those people excel—and how readers can use their methods to regain a sense of mastery over the way they organize their homes, workplaces, and time. With lively, entertaining chapters on everything from the kitchen junk drawer to health care to executive office workflow, Levitin reveals how new research into the cognitive neuroscience of attention and memory can be applied to the challenges of our daily lives. This Is Your Brain on Music showed how to better play and appreciate music through an understanding of how the brain works. The Organized Mind shows how to navigate the churning flood of information in the twenty-first century with the same neuroscientific perspective.
