Book excerpt: Cleft lip with or without cleft palate (CL/P) is one of the most common craniofacial anomalies. Patients with CL/P often require extensive and prolonged orthodontic treatment due the skeletal and dental malocclusions that frequently manifest, making the orthodontic burden of care significant compared to the non-cleft patient. Orthodontic treatment may be required at various stages in their dental and skeletal development, during which orthodontic records must regularly be taken, including cephalometric radiographs. These radiographs allow for analysis of skeletal and dental relationships by relating various anatomical landmarks through linear and angular measurements. Due to the time-consuming nature of the current computer-aided method, which currently involves an orthodontist locating points of a lateral skull radiograph on a computer monitor, systems have recently been developed to automate the cephalometric process. However, while systems such as CephX have been shown to significantly shorten analyzing time, the accuracy of the measurements is inadequate. Further, radiographs of CL/P-affected patients are often excluded from the sample, as identification of cephalometric landmarks is more complicated due to abnormal anatomy. There is promise that lateral simulated 2D cephalometric projections from CBCTs improve the accuracy of cephalometric measurements over 2D cephalograms. This study sought to compare the accuracy and analyzing time between web-based fully automated and computer-aided cephalometric analysis of lateral cephalometric images derived from cone-beam computed tomography in unilateral cleft lip and palate-affected patients. Both methods of cephalometric analysis were performed on 36 CBCTs obtained of individuals with unilateral cleft lip and palate in the mixed dentition stage. Of the 12 measurements obtained, 4 measurements, U1-PP (°), SN-MP (°), U1-SN (°) and U1-NA (mm) were both statistically significant (P

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Majoradvances in the diagnosis and treatment of oral clefts have been made in the past 50 years, and recent genetics and epidemiological studies have led to new theories about the causes of cleft lip and palate. Addressing issues that are relevant to clinicians, researchers and family members, this book is a comprehensive, well-illustrated, and up-to-date account of the many facets of this common disorder. The authors describe the embryological and molecular mechanisms of cleft causation, present and illustrate the genetic and epidemiological methods used to identify risk factors for oral clefts, and describe treatments by the various professionals of the cleft team. A section is also devoted to the integration of research findings into public health practice, including ethical and financial considerations. The book draws together such diverse disciplines as craniofacial development, gene mapping, epidemiology, medicine, ethics, health economics, and health policy and management, and it will be an invaluable reference work.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chronic inflammation such as seen in periodontitis and its bidirectional influence on the systemic health has been of increased interest for a decade. In this text book, we have explored the biological and genetic pathways by which periodontal diseases may influence these disease processes and vice versa. Occlusal rehabilitation using the MEAW technique for the effective treatment of class II deep bite malocclusion and the timely management of cleft lip and palate to benefit the holistic welfare of the patient are presented here. The book addresses the development of bioinspired functionally graded dental restorative materials and also a simulation method that can improve clinical durability and enhance the functional capability of the dentition and indirect prostheses. In conclusion, various pathways for the promotion of oral health with evidence-based concepts are considered.

The objective is to concisely discuss the methodology of interspecialty care and stimulate future ideas for prophylactically managing or preventing such deformities. I am confident that one day the surgical interventions that bombard the patients from the day of newborn delivery and throughout the years of youth should be significantly decreased based on the genetic prophylactic intervention, probably.
