Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Century of Mining and Metallurgy in the United States: Centennial Address of Abram S. Hewitt, President Elect of the American Institute of Mining Engineers; Philadelphia, June 20, 1876 The Indians inhabiting the Mississippi Valley before the advent of the whites probably did not understand the metallurgy of lead. Galena has been found in the Western mounds, but, it is said, no lead. In 1700 and 1701 Pere Le Sueur made his famous voyage up the Mississippi, discovering, as he claimed, many lead mines. Lead mining was begun in Missouri in 1720, while that country belonged to France, and under the patent granted to Law's famous Mississippi Company. Mine la Motte, named after a mineralogist who came over with Renault, the superintendent, was one of the first discoveries. It has been in operation at intervals ever Since, and is now successfully managed by Mr. Cogswell, a member of our Institute, who may, I think, truthfully claim that he has charge of the oldest mining enterprise still active in the United States. The ores yield a small percentage \of nickel and cobalt, as well as lead. It was in 1788 that Dubuque obtained from the Indians the grant under which he mined until the year of his death, where the city now stands which bears his name. The land was subsequently ceded to the United States by the Indians, and the representatives of Dubuque were forcibly ejected. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gambling on Ore examines the development of the western mining industry from the tumultuous and violent Gold Rush to the elevation of large-scale copper mining in the early twentieth century, using Montana as representative of mining developments in the broader US mining west. Employing abundant new historical evidence in key primary and secondary sources, Curtis tells the story of the inescapable relationship of mining to nature in the modern world as the United States moved from a primarily agricultural society to a mining nation in the second half of the nineteenth century. In Montana, legal issues and politics—such as unexpected consequences of federal mining law and the electrification of the United States—further complicated the mining industry’s already complex relationship to geology, while government policy, legal frameworks, dominant understandings of nature, and the exigencies of profit and production drove the industry in momentous and surprising directions. Despite its many uncertainties, mining became an important part of American culture and daily life. Gambling on Ore unpacks the tangled relationships between mining and the natural world that gave material possibility to the age of electricity. Metal mining has had a profound influence on the human ecology and the social relationships of North America through the twentieth century and throughout the world after World War II. Understanding how we forged these relationships is central to understanding the environmental history of the United States after 1850.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The History of Metals in America chronicles the development of metals as both an industrial activity and a science. Progress involving structural metals made possible the air, land, sea, and space travel of today, skyscrapers reaching over 100 stories high, and many other engineering accomplishments that continue to shape modern society. This lively book takes the reader on a fascinating journey through the evolution of metals and metallurgy from the beginning of iron production in colonial times with the first iron plant in 1645 to the prevailing metals of the 21st century. Each chapter describes the development of a metal or series of metal alloys, industry growth, and modern uses in manufacturing. It includes chapters on cast iron, wrought iron, alloy steels, tool steels, stainless steels, nickel-base superalloys, aluminum, and titanium. Other chapters cover the science of metals as it developed from 1890 to 1950 and the biographies of the pioneers of metals research. The final chapters cover the formation, growth, and decline of the integrated steel industry and the rise of a new industry in steel minimills. The History of Metals in America will appeal to readers in all sectors of the materials industry, students and faculty of engineering programs, middle and high school American history students, and anyone interested in the history of technology, travel, tools, and machinery in the U.S. The author, Charles R. Simcoe, wrote more than 40 articles for ASM International’s Advanced Materials & Processes magazine, including a monthly series entitled “Metallurgy Lane,” which became the basis for this book.

Department of Energy commissioned the National Research Council (NRC) to undertake a study on required technologies for the Mining Industries of the Future Program to complement information provided to the program by the National Mining Association. Subsequently, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health also became a sponsor of this study, and the Statement of Task was expanded to include health and safety. The overall objectives of this study are: (a) to review available information on the U.S. mining industry; (b) to identify critical research and development needs related to the exploration, mining, and processing of coal, minerals, and metals; and (c) to examine the federal contribution to research and development in mining processes.
