Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Betty Shanks was brutally murdered 70 years ago. This book’s third edition reveals Betty’s secret life as documented in an ASIO file, which states that: - Betty was in an ‘intimate association’ with a young married man who was a member of the Communist Party of Australia. - Betty’s best friend from schooldays at Brisbane Girls Grammar School and at the University of Queensland, Winifred Cowin, worked for ASIO before committing suicide in 1958. - An ASIO officer arrived in Brisbane on Sunday 21 September 1952 to recruit Betty, only to be told that she had been murdered the previous Friday night. Ted Duhs alleges that Betty was killed by a man she met at the Grange tram terminus as she returned home from a night class at Brisbane’s Central Tech. This man, referred to as ‘the man in the brown suit’, was seen by four witnesses, including Marie Patton who is still alive. Minutes before Betty was attacked, Marie saw him 30 yards from the murder scene. Evidence suggests he was Eric Sterry. His daughter, Desche, is still alive, and in 1999 her story “My Dad Killed Betty Shanks” was published in The Courier Mail, after her earlier attempts to persuade the police were unsuccessful.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: War has shaped Australian society profoundly. When we commemorate the sacrifices of the Anzacs, we rightly celebrate their bravery, but we do not always acknowledge the complex aftermath of combat. In The Cost of War, Stephen Garton traces the experiences of Australia’s veterans, and asks what we can learn from their stories. He considers the long-term effects of war on returned servicemen and women, on their families and communities, and on Australian public life. He describes attempts to respond to the physical and psychological wounds of combat, from the first victims of shellshock during WWI to more recent understandings of post-traumatic stress disorder. And he examines the political and social repercussions of war, including debates over how we should commemorate conflict and how society should respond to the needs of veterans. When the first edition of The Cost of War appeared in 1996, it offered a ground-breaking new perspective on the Anzac experience. In this new edition, Garton again makes a compelling case for a more nuanced understanding of the individual and collective costs of war.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Has anyone ever heard of Colin Munro, let alone 'Fern Vale'? Yet this was the first Queensland novel, published in London in 1862. The author, of Scottish origin, was a young mercantile clerk who, after five years in Brisbane, returned to London to seek a wife and write a book. He returned to Brisbane in 1863 to become a storekeeper, merchant and Pacific trader. He later became a farmer and, while pursuing his agrarian dream in Queensland, this extraordinary man played out the purpose of his novel. Though written as a pastoral romance on the Darling Downs, the book's real aim was to attract migrants to the new colony during the optimistic 1860s. Taking its cue from the visionary Rev. Dr John D. Lang of Sydney, the novel, set in 1856-57, expounds the controversial issues of labour, industry and capital, as well as the tropical economy, land regulation, aboriginal policy, convict origin and separation from NSW.

Book excerpt: Susanna de Vries, award-winning author, and Jake de Vries, former City Architect of Brisbane, have pooled their talents to compile a joint book on the building of Brisbane, which transports us back to the first years of Brisbane’s bleak existence. The book shows the Convict and Officers Barracks and convicts digging roads along what became Queen Street and North Quay. Professional artist Conrad Martens paints the Customs House and Kangaroo Point. The book recounts the effects of Brisbane’s building boom of the 1880s when everyone borrowed money and major buildings like the Mansions, the old Museum, the second wing of the Post Office and the Treasury are completed. In the depression years of the 1890s some Queensland banks and architects go broke. A visiting Canadian artist named Lefèvre Cranstone draws rural Toowong, the Regatt a Hotel and the Toowong Rowing Club. River Road, [later Coronation Drive], once used for droving cattle from Brookfield, becomes a thoroughfare for the carriages of the wealthy from Indooroopilly and Milton.

Book excerpt: Brisbane at War 1899-1918 is the Brisbane History Group’s twenty-sixth volume of papers. In total there are eleven chapters. All were mostly delivered at BHG functions. Two are from a seminar entitled ‘For Queen and Empire: Queensland and the South African War 1899-1902’ held on 26 May 2012 and seven were delivered at our seminars ‘Brisbane and World War I’ held on 6 September 2014 and 3 October 2015. An additional two papers were delivered elsewhere. Written by amateurs, professionals and academics, the chapters offer a diverse range of subjects. Themes include: - t· the importance of military medicine during the Second South African War - t· the Dutch attitudes and responses to the Boers and British and their decision to adopt a ‘neutral’ position - t· the story of the twelve Brisbane Grammar School old boys who fought in the Second South African War and World War I - t· the increasing activity at the Port of Brisbane as troops embarked for Europe and German raiders ventured into the Pacific - t· the underage enlistees, their motives, their experiences, their fate and the aftermath - t· the paediatricians and paediatric nurses who readily volunteered for duty in World War I • · the formation of the Women’s Peace Army and its ‘war against war’ … and conscription - t· the influences on Canon John Garland and his design for the Anzac Day service - t· the sorry saga of the Clark Memorial Windows at St John’s Cathedral - t· the response of Brisbane theatre to the changing attitudes of audiences in World War I - t· the opportunities to display patriotism in a range of different performances
