Book excerpt: "This book points to and describes where we are surely heading: full incarnationalism. The salvation that God is offering the universe is much more whole, much more now, much better than we dared to imagine. Joe Conti shares with us a Christ who is bigger than our small humanity, and a humanity that is still capable of such a Christ." —Fr. Richard Rohr, author of Everything Belongs: The Gift of Contemplative Prayer "Joseph Conti draws from a wide range of sources in developing a vision of Christian life that integrates into a single whole the principles of holistic medicine, psychological healing, and contemplative spirituality." —James Finley, author of Merton's Palace of Nowhere "Dr. Conti initiated a personal dialogue with me from his very first page, and he faithfully sustained our relationship as he led me along the tried and true paths of Catholic spirituality. It is clear that Conti has completed the exacting research at every juncture of his study, respecting the classical sources on Christian mysticism even as he proposes his own carefully measured insights." —George Saint Laurent, Ph.D., author of Spirituality and World Religions, Professor Emeritus, California State University at Fullerton "A highly accessible, engagingly direct and deeply informed practice-oriented text."—Philip Novak, Chairman, Dept. of Philosophy and Religion, Dominican College of San Raf'l, author of The World's Wisdom " novel breakthrough, assisted by vivid illustrations"—Dr. Robert Ellwood, Professor Emeritus of Religion, University of Southern California, author of Mysticism and Religion
Download or read book Holism written by Christian McMillan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-12-06 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Holism: Possibilities and Problems brings together leading contributors in a ground-breaking discussion of holism. The terms ‘holism’ and ‘holistic’ arouse strong emotional responses in contemporary culture, whether this be negative or positive, and the essays in this interdisciplinary collection probe, each in its own way, the possibilities and problems inherent in thinking holistically. Christian McMillan, Roderick Main and David Henderson bring together established academics and emerging scholars across subject areas and disciplinary approaches to reveal the multiplicity and complexity of issues involved in holism. Divided into four parts, the chapters determine key strands of thinking explicitly or implicitly underpinning contemporary holistic thought, including what ethical conclusions might most reasonably be drawn from such thought. Accessible and diverse, this extensive volume contains chapters from the perspective of history, ecology, psychotherapy, poetry, mythology, and an especially strong representation of continental philosophy and Jungian depth psychology. Due to its multi-disciplinary nature, the book represents an unparalleled discussion of the meanings and implications of holism. Written by an innovative and international calibre of contributors, this pioneering collection will be essential reading for practitioners in depth psychology and scholars of Jungian studies, as well as academics and students of philosophy, religious studies, spirituality, history and the history of ideas. The book is a rich resource for the enhancement of critical reflection among all those with an interest in holism.

Book Synopsis Edith Stein and the Body-soul-spirit at the Center of Holistic Formation by : Marian Maskulak
Download or read book Edith Stein and the Body-soul-spirit at the Center of Holistic Formation written by Marian Maskulak and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2007 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With a particular emphasis on the soul, this book explores Edith Stein's holistic conception of the human being's body-soul-spirit unity, which forms the foundation of her Christian anthropology and her view of human formation. Characterized by an unremitting attention to interconnections, Stein emerges as a forerunner of contemporary holistic approaches. Edith Stein and the Body-Soul-Spirit at the Center of Holistic Formation demonstrates the breadth and relevance of Stein's work by engaging her thought with the anthropological views of fellow phenomenologist John Paul II, Wilkie Au's perspectives on holistic spirituality and formation, and several nonreductionist, neuroscientific viewpoints of the human being. This book also makes available to the English reader a significant amount of material from Stein's untranslated works. Anyone interested in theological anthropology, holistic spirituality, human formation, the body-mind question, or Edith Stein studies will benefit from the wealth of material presented in this single book.
Book Synopsis A Holistic Approach to Rights by : Eugene Schlossberger
Download or read book A Holistic Approach to Rights written by Eugene Schlossberger and published by University Press of America. This book was released on 2008 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Applying new theories about rights to pressing social issues, A Holistic Approach to Rights suggests major changes are needed in the ways we think about rights and formulating social policy. Part I analyzes rights as networks of warrants--socially recognized sanctions for doing, saying, demanding, believing, feeling, or thinking something as one's due. On this account, rights are more varied and play a more diverse and open-ended role in legal and moral thinking than most theories of rights allow. A new theory of natural rights treats them as claims that every person has upon the state, as a condition of legitimacy, to make adequate provision for those features of human life that require force against persons to be justified. Moral rights, such as the right to the truth, derive from team loyalty due fellow members of the moral community and can be lost by someone who acts in ways that undermine the moral enterprise. Part II provides detailed analyses of affirmative action, group rights, the rights of future generations, reproductive rights, the use of new reproductive technologies, and speech rights. Specific conclusions include an innovative proposal for regulating violence and pornography in the media.

Book Synopsis A More Perfect Union by : Linda Sargent Wood
Download or read book A More Perfect Union written by Linda Sargent Wood and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2012-09-01 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1962, when the Cold War threatened to ignite in the Cuban Missile Crisis, when more nuclear test bombs were detonated than in any other year in history, Rachel Carson released her own bombshell, Silent Spring, to challenge society's use of pesticides. To counter the use of chemicals--and bombs--the naturalist articulated a holistic vision. She wrote about a "web of life" that connected humans to the world around them and argued that actions taken in one place had consequences elsewhere. Thousands accepted her message, joined environmental groups, flocked to Earth Day celebrations, and lobbied for legislative regulation. Carson was not the only intellectual to offer holistic answers to society's problems. This book uncovers a sensibility in post-World War II American culture that both tested the logic of the Cold War and fed some of the twentieth century's most powerful social movements, from civil rights to environmentalism to the counterculture. The study examines important leaders and institutions that embraced and put into practice a holistic vision for a peaceful, healthful, and just world: nature writer Rachel Carson, structural engineer R. Buckminster Fuller, civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr., Jesuit priest and paleontologist Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, humanistic psychologist Abraham Maslow, and the Esalen Institute and its founders, Michael Murphy and Dick Price. Each looked to whole systems instead of parts and focused on connections, interdependencies, and integration to create a better world. Though the '60s dreams of creating a more perfect world were tempered by economic inequalities, political corruption, and deep social divisions, this holistic sensibility continues to influence American culture today.
