Download or read book Muslims written by Andrew Rippin and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2001 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now available as one paperback volume, the second edition of this authoritative text provides a survey of Islamic history and thought with new chapters on intellectual thought and medieval developments. It seeks to redress the lack of critical thought that appears in so many introductory books on Islam. Rippin examines the elements which come together to form Islam, in particular the Qur'an and the traditions from Muhammad. He traces the way these sources have interacted through history to create the disciplines of theology and law and provide the basis for the "alternative visions" of Islam found in Shi'ism and Sufism.

Robinson and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2010-11-04 with total page 1057 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume One of The New Cambridge History of Islam, which surveys the political and cultural history of Islam from its Late Antique origins until the eleventh century, brings together contributions from leading scholars in the field. The book is divided into four parts. The first provides an overview of the physical and political geography of the Late Antique Middle East. The second charts the rise of Islam and the emergence of the Islamic political order under the Umayyad and the Abbasid caliphs of the seventh, eighth and ninth centuries, followed by the dissolution of the empire in the tenth and eleventh. 'Regionalism', the overlapping histories of the empire's provinces, is the focus of Part Three, while Part Four provides a cutting-edge discussion of the sources and controversies of early Islamic history, including a survey of numismatics, archaeology and material culture.

The volume includes an introduction by the editor that offers an overview of the processes involved and helps place each article in its proper context. This book was released on 2018-03-30 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abu Sa'id 'Abd al-Hayy Gardizi was an author and historian living in the mid-eleventh century at the height of the Turkish Ghazvanid dynasty. His only known work, The Ornament of Histories ('Zayn al-akhbir'), is a hugely ambitious history of the Eastern Islamic lands AD 650-1041, spanning what is now Eastern Iran, Afghanistan and parts of the Central Asian Republics and Indo-Pakistan subcontinent. Gardizi's text is an extremely rare source of primary information about the rise of Islamic faith, culture and military dominance in these regions, and represents a significant contribution to our understanding of the early Islamic world. This is the first English translation of the original Persian text, and is accompanied by an introduction and commentary which details the historical, geographical and cultural context.

Download or read book Writing Signs written by Irene A. Bierman and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 1998-12-16 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Irene Bierman explores the complex relationship between alphabet and language as well as the ways the two elements are socially defined by time and place. She focuses her exploration on the Eastern Mediterranean in the sixth through twelfth centuries, notably Cairo's Fatimid dynasty of 969-1171. Examining the inscriptions on Fatimid architecture and textiles, Bierman offers insight into all elements of that society, from religion to the economy, and the enormous changes the dynasty underwent during that period. Bierman addresses fundamental issues of what buildings mean, how inscriptions affect that meaning, and the role of written messages and the ceremonies into which they are incorporated in service of propagandist goals. Her method and conclusions provide a pioneering model for studying public writing in other societies and offer powerful evidence to show that writing is a highly charged and deeply embedded social practice.
