Book Synopsis Iconographic Exegesis and Third Isaiah by : Izaak Jozias Hulster
Download or read book Iconographic Exegesis and Third Isaiah written by Izaak Jozias Hulster and published by Mohr Siebeck. This book was released on 2009 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although scholars employ pictorial material in biblical exegesis, the question of how images from the Ancient Near East can contribute to a better understanding of the Bible has been left unanswered. This is the first monograph to outline a historical method for iconographic exegesis. The methodological study includes both responses to important theoretical questions such as What is an image? and What is culture? and an interdisciplinary exploration of issues of history, art history, archaeology and cultural anthropology. The three-stage method proposed is embedded in hermeneutical and exegetical reflections. The application of iconographical exegesis to the interpretation of metaphors is also considered. In demonstrating the method and its application, Izaak J. de Hulster focuses on Third Isaiah and develops three iconographical exegetical studies on yad in Isaiah 56:5, light in Isaiah 60 and grape processing in Isaiah 63.

Book Synopsis Greco-Roman Culture and the Galilee of Jesus by : Mark A. Chancey
Download or read book Greco-Roman Culture and the Galilee of Jesus written by Mark A. Chancey and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2005-12-15 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Greco-Roman Culture and the Galilee of Jesus, a book-length investigation of this topic, challenges the conventional scholarly view that first-century Galilee was thoroughly Hellenised. Examining architecture, inscriptions, coins and art from Alexander the Great's conquest until the early fourth century CE, Chancey argues that the extent of Greco-Roman culture in the time of Jesus has often been greatly exaggerated. Antipas's reign in the early first century was indeed a time of transition, but the more dramatic shifts in Galilee's cultural climate happened in the second century, after the arrival of a large Roman garrison. Much of Galilee's Hellenisation should thus be understood within the context of its Romanisation. Any attempt to understand the Galilean setting of Jesus must recognise the significance of the region's historical development as well as how Galilee fits into the larger context of the Roman East.

Book Synopsis The Coinage of Herod Antipas by : Jean-Philippe Fontanille
Download or read book The Coinage of Herod Antipas written by Jean-Philippe Fontanille and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2018-05-01 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Coinage of Herod Antipas provides a comprehensive, multifaceted and up-to-date re-examination of the coins of Herod Antipas, the tetrarch of Galilee and Peraea between 4/3 BCE and 39/40 CE. Kogon and Fontanille classify about 800 coins by obverse and reverse dies. From this die classification they generate, for the first time ever for this tetrarch, about 300 composite die images. In addition, the authors examine both technical aspects of the coins (e.g. metrology, mint output) and non-technical aspects (e.g. inscriptions, iconography). They also review the geographic distribution of provenanced coins. Through this analysis of the coins of Herod Antipas, Kogon and Fontanille provide a greater understanding of the Sitz im Leben of first century Galilee.
Book Synopsis The Yehud Coinage by : Jean-Philippe Fontanille
Download or read book The Yehud Coinage written by Jean-Philippe Fontanille and published by Israel Numismatic Society. This book was released on 2023-12-31 with total page 547 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents a die study of the provincial silver coinage of Judah in the late Persian, Macedonian, and early Hellenistic periods. It offers correct descriptions of the coins, their designs, and their inscriptions; enumerates the obverse and reverse dies identified for each of the 44 recorded types; and explains the probable sequence of the issues as deduced from iconographic associations and die links. The iconography of the coin types is examined in depth, with comparisons to motifs in Greek, Persian, and ancient Near Eastern art, including other local coinages and sources in Judahite material culture. The monograph also analyzes data relating to the metrology, metal content, and circulation of the coinage. Overall, the study attempts to place the Yehud coinage in its historical context and to define its role in the economy of the ancient province of Judah.

Book excerpt: Between 2007 and 2014, a Greek-American team investigated an impressive array of Early Roman to Early Byzantine buildings and burials on the Koutsongila Ridge at Kenchreai, the eastern port of ancient Corinth. This volume presents the project's final results, revealing abundant evidence not only for the history of activity in a transitional urban/suburban landscape, but also for the society, economy, and religion of local residents. Important structural and mortuary discoveries abound, including a district of lavish houses with exquisite mosaic pavement and an Early Christian Octagon. The large artifactual assemblage encompasses a variety of objects from pottery and lamps to glass, coins, and jewelry. Bones and teeth from over 200 individuals illustrate differences in health over time, while thousands of bones and shells from a variety of animals attest to diet and subsistence. This study paints a picture of a Corinthian community, small but prosperous and well connected, actively participating in an urban elite culture expressed through decorative art and monumental architecture.
Book Synopsis The Land of Benjamin by : Izchak Magen
Download or read book The Land of Benjamin written by Izchak Magen and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title deals with one of the most important areas in the Land of Israel during the Second Temple period. It was to this area that most Jews returned from the Babylonian Exile, and it was here that the Hasmonean state, with its religious and military heritage, was formed and flourished. At the core of this book is the description of the discovery of two agricultural settlements and the finds unearthed there, which illuminate Jewish rural life during the Second Temple period. Most important is the unearthing of a synagogue, dating from before the destruction of the Temple, which is the first synagogue discovered from that period to date in the Land of Benjamin.
