Book Synopsis Cornelius Henrici Hoen (Honius) and his Epistle on the Eucharist (1525) by : Bart Jan Spruyt
Download or read book Cornelius Henrici Hoen (Honius) and his Epistle on the Eucharist (1525) written by Bart Jan Spruyt and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2006-11-01 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about Cornelius Henrici Hoen and his well-known treatise on the Eucharist, published in 1525, and answers questions like: Who actually was Hoen? What made him dissent from the current belief in transubstantiation? What were the sources of his dissent, and what was his relationship to famous contemporaries like Erasmus, Luther, Zwingli and Bucer? And how influential has his treatise been? After a more detailed portrait of Hoen’s life, the chapters on the origins of his ideas establish that Hoen was not only dependent on Erasmus and Luther, but actually revived age-old heretical arguments, first proposed in the high Middle Ages and later defended by Hus and Wyclif, and popularized by Lollards and Hussites in the late medieval Burgundian Netherlands. The book also describes Hoen’s influence on Reformation thought, and contains an edition of the original Latin text and of a contemporary German translation.

Book Synopsis The Eucharist in the Reformation by : Lee Palmer Wandel
Download or read book The Eucharist in the Reformation written by Lee Palmer Wandel and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2006 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Eucharist in the Reformation: Incarnation and Liturgy takes up the words, 'this is my body', 'this do', and 'remembrance of me' that divided Christendom in the sixteenth century. It traces the different understandings of these simple words and the consequences of those divergent understandings in the delineation of the Lutheran, Reformed, and Catholic traditions: the different formulations of liturgy with their different conceptualizations of the cognitive and collective function of ritual; the different conceptualizations of the relationship between Christ and the living body of the faithful; the different articulations of the relationship between the world of matter and divinity; and the different epistemologies. It argues that the incarnation is at the center of the story of the Reformation and suggests how divergent religious identities were formed.

Book Synopsis Lay Theology in the Reformation by : Paul A. Russell
Download or read book Lay Theology in the Reformation written by Paul A. Russell and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2002-06-20 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the coming of the Protestant Reformation from the viewpoint of eight common people, who were sufficiently disturbed by the events of 1521-5 to write treatises, letters, dialogues, and sermons, which they published. Their works are lively testimony to the interest of laypeople in the affairs of the church, and their willingness to discuss often complex theological training. These works are among the first documents of lay theology and piety, but they are also propaganda: disappointed with the Catholic clergy and with secular authorities, the authors of these pamphlets were called to prophesy, preach, and convert their readers/listeners lest Christ return soon to find his church unprepared. They demanded a new apostolate for laypeople, something the clergy had feared for centuries and something which civic authorities feared as a potential source of radical ideas.
Book Synopsis The Sack of Rome, 1527 by : André Chastel
Download or read book The Sack of Rome, 1527 written by André Chastel and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2023-10-17 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From a leading art historian of Renaissance Italy, a compelling account of the artistic and cultural impact of the sack of sixteenth-century Rome In this illustrated account of the sack of Rome as a cultural and artistic phenomenon, André Chastel reveals the historical ambiguities of preceding events and the traumatic contrast between the flourishing world of art under Pope Clement VII and the city after it was looted by the troops of Emperor Charles V in 1527. Chastel illuminates the cultural repercussions of the humiliation of Rome, emphasizing the spread or “Europeanization” of the Mannerist style by artists who fled the city—including Parmigianino, Rosso, Polidoro, Peruzzi, and Perino del Vaga. At the same time, Clement’s critics used the new media of printing and engraving to win over the people with caricatures and satirical writings, while Rome responded with monumental works affirming the legitimacy of the pope’s temporal power. Chastel explores both the world that was lost by the sack and the great works of art created during Rome’s recovery.
Book Synopsis Martin Bucer: Opera Latina, Volume 6. De vera et falsa caenae dominicae administratione (1546) by : Nick Thompson
Download or read book Martin Bucer: Opera Latina, Volume 6. De vera et falsa caenae dominicae administratione (1546) written by Nick Thompson and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2014-07-03 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Martin Bucer's De vera et falsa caenae dominicae administratione marks the collapse of his hopes for a negotiated settlement of the Reformation in Germany. He completed the work in March 1546 as fresh negotiations between Catholic and Protestant theologians reached an impasse in Regensburg, as the second session of the Council of Trent was meeting, and as Charles V prepared to make war on the Protestant League of Schmalkalden. At one level the work deals with the church's authority to regulate the celebration of the Lord's Supper, but at a more fundamental level it challenges moderate Catholics such as the humanist scholar Bartholomaeus Latomus to decide whether their ultimate loyalties lie with pope and council or with Christ and his Gospel.

Book Synopsis Un temps, une ville, Réforme by : Marc Lienhard
Download or read book Un temps, une ville, Réforme written by Marc Lienhard and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-10-28 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Professor Lienhard deals here primarily with the first half of the 16th century, a momentous period which saw the rise and first triumphs of evangelical Christianity. His focus is upon the town of Strasbourg, one of the places where the Reformation first left its mark, and the articles combine to present an illuminating picture of the town's social and religious evolution over the period. Some approach the subject at an individual level, with studies of the protagonists in the events - such as Martin Bucer, Matthieu Zell or Thomas Murner - and their differing religious viewpoints. Other articles take a broader perspective, analysing the social and political background to the triumph of the Reform, the gradual emergence of a new order, and local attitudes towards the new dissidents, the Anabaptists. An important section of additional notes and comments completes the volume.
Book Synopsis Karlstadt and the Origins of the Eucharistic Controversy by : Amy Nelson Burnett
Download or read book Karlstadt and the Origins of the Eucharistic Controversy written by Amy Nelson Burnett and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2011-01-24 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The debate over the Lord's Supper had momentous consequences for the Reformation, causing the division of the evangelical movement, influencing the formation of political alliances, and contributing to cultural differences among the Protestant territories of Germany and Switzerland. Karlstadt and the Origins of the Eucharistic Controversy is the first full-length study of the beginning of that debate. Going beyond the traditional focus on Martin Luther and Ulrich Zwingli, it emphasizes the diversity of the "sacramentarian" challenge to traditional belief in Christ's corporeal presence in the bread and wine of the Eucharist, and it re-evaluates the significance of Luther's colleague, Andreas Bodenstein von Karlstadt, for the debate. Burnett describes Luther's earliest criticisms of the mass and the efforts in Wittenberg to reform liturgical praxis to correspond with his ideas. She then looks at pamphlets written by other reformers to show how Luther's understanding of the sacrament was adapted and modified outside of Wittenberg. Ultimately, Burnett shows how Karlstadt's eucharistic pamphlets introduced into the public debate arguments that would become standard Reformed criticisms of the Lutheran position. The book also demonstrates the influence not only of Erasmus but also of John Wyclif and the Hussites for discussions of the sacrament, highlights the role of the reformers of Basel and Strasbourg for developing the "Zwinglian" understanding of the Lord's Supper, and draws attention to the early eucharistic theology of the Silesians Kaspar Schwenckfeld and Valentin Krautwald. This book will be an indispensable guide for readers seeking to understand the issues surrounding the outbreak of the eucharistic controversy in the sixteenth century.
