This book was released on 2020-10-20 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Highlights from one of the world's most impressive private collections of Dutch Golden Age masterpieces Over the past 35 years, husband-and-wife collector duo Rose-Marie and Eijk van Otterloo have acquired an unparalleled private collection of 17th-century Dutch and Flemish paintings, representing a selection of work by the Dutch Golden Age's most important artists. This volume compiles some two dozen masterworks from the van Otterloo Collection, which was donated by the couple to the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston in 2017, as one of the most generous gifts in the museum's history. Included among these visually splendid paintings is one of the world's best-preserved Rembrandts, previously housed in a private collection: his 1632 piece Portrait of Aeltje Uylenburgh, which depicts its elderly sitter in dark robes and a delicate white millstone collar. Works by other Dutch Masters such as Cuyp, Rubens, Anthony van Dyck and Jan Brueghel the Elder round out the collection with a variety of pictorial subjects, from genre scenes to seascapes to still lifes. Accompanied by biographical and art historical information to provide context for the artists and their work, the series of lavish reproductions assembled in this volume invites readers to immerse themselves in the careful composition and beautiful light quality of this era's finest paintings.

Book excerpt: "This richly illustrated book provides an overview of all known Dutch and Flemish artists up to the nineteenth century who painted or drew flower pieces, or else made prints of them. Unlike many mainstream art historical studies, the book takes a truly comprehensive approach, including cases where only a single example is known or even if nothing of the artist's other work appears to have survived. Containing highly instructive lists identifying the names of flowers, as well as insects and other animals, the book also discusses the earliest depictions of flower still life and the distinctive characteristics behind the development of floral arrangements in different periods, including the variation of the flowers, the variety of techniques used by artists, as well as an exploration of the symbolism behind the numerous plant and animal species this form of art portrays.--éd.

Book Synopsis Old Dutch and Flemish Masters by : Timothy Cole
Download or read book Old Dutch and Flemish Masters written by Timothy Cole and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-08 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old Dutch and Flemish Masters: With Critical Notes There is another reason for the publication of these engravings, one held in view by the originators of the first series. It seems fitting and proper that a knowledge of Dutch art should be spread through the land by just such reproductions as these. People to day, though they do not sneer at Dutch art, are far from estimating it at its true worth. They cherish ideals and academic formulas of the beautiful, and are only too prone to overlook that truth, char acter, wholesome picturesqueness, and surprising skill for which Dutch art is famous. Even with those who profess a love for the Dutchmen, there is a tendency to elevate Dou above Hals and Potter above Cuyp. In brief, while people have been studying Greek and Italian art for years, the art of the Netherlands has been comparatively neglected, and to-day is not at all well understood, except by the few. The engravings of Mr. Cole, then, are oppor tune, in that they furnish materials for study. In the absence of the originals, which for various reasons the majority of people will never see, nothing could be better designed to take their place than these admirable reproductions. The pictures from which the engravings have been made were selected with the aim of giving the work of the representative men in Dutch and Flemish art. It was necessary, on account of the great extent of the Netherlands art, that a period only should be given, and so the brilliant painting of the seventeenth century furnished the originals for the engravings. The text that accompanies them, and Mr. Cole's comments, are intended to explain this seven teenth-century art, and to give some account of the history of the schools, and of the individual painters whose works are engraved. Book excerpt: The Harold Samuel Art Collection is a unique collection of 17th-century paintings from the Golden Age of Holland. Bequeathed to the City of London in 1987 by Lord Harold Samuel of Wych Cross, a wealthy property developer and entrepreneur, this remarkable collection of 84 works - the best collection of Dutch a nd Flemish art in Britain - enriches the splendor of the interior of the Mansion House, the residence of the Lord Mayor of London. The Merry Lute Player by Frans Hals is perhaps the best known picture in the collection, but Samuel also gathered truly outstanding examples of genre painting, indeed several of the finest works in existence by Nicolaes Maes, Jacob Ochtervelt, Adriaen van Ostade and Jan Steen. Eleven winter landscapes include such masterpieces as Hendrick Avercamp's large copper panel depicting a frozen river, and amongst the archtypical Dutch panoramas are exceptional works by masters of the genre, Philips Koninck and Jacob von Ruisdael.
