The research hypotheses were as follows: (H1) African-American students at predominantly white colleges with Pre-encounter stage attitudes will be less likely to report mastery of the developmental tasks of Clarifying Purpose, Mature Interpersonal Relationships, Academic Autonomy and Salubrious Lifestyle. (H2) African-American students at predominantly white colleges with Encounter and Internalization stage attitudes will be more likely to report the mastery of the developmental tasks of Clarifying Purpose, Mature Interpersonal Relationships, Academic Autonomy and Salubrious Lifestyle. (H3) African-American students at predominantly white colleges with Immersion stage attitudes will be less likely to report mastery of developmental tasks of Clarifying Purpose, Mature Interpersonal Relationships, Academic Autonomy and Salubrious Lifestyle. The author used two theoretical models: the Theory Racial Identity Development, Cross (1971) and Chickering's (1969) Theory of Psychosocial Development. To operationalize both theories, the Racial Identity Attitudes Scale, Parham and Helms (1981) was used to measure racial identity attitudes and the Student Developmental Task and Lifestyle Inventory was used to measure student development (Winston, Miller, and Prince, 1987). The sample consisted of 119 African-American college students who were members of the Black Student unions at three predominantly White public colleges. Hierarchical multiple regression was used to determine the relationship between personal background characteristics, the racial identity attitudes and student developmental tasks. Pre-encounter (anti-Black) and Immersion (pro-Black) stage attitudes were less likely to report the mastery of the tasks associated with mature interpersonal relationships. Students with Encounter (pro-Black) stage attitudes were more likely to report the mastery of the Establishing and Clarifying Purpose task and Salubrious Lifestyle. Personal background characteristics showed the strongest effects. For Mature Interpersonal Relationships tasks, the strongest effects were class level and gender. Females were more likely to report the mastery of the Mature Interpersonal Relationships task. Four effects were stronger when Salubrious Lifestyle was examined. These were gender (males were likely to report the mastery of the Salubrious Lifestyle task while in college), income level, the percentage of Blacks in one's high school at the time of graduation, and the predominant race of teachers at the time of graduation. The findings of this study have implications for student affairs professionals such as counselors and residence life staff.

Book excerpt: Multiracial people are the fastest growing demographic in the U.S., with the largest concentration under the age of 18 (U.S. Census Bureau, 2021). Despite this, research about racial identity for multiracial adolescents is limited, especially research that takes a strengths-based approach. Racial identity has traditionally been thought of as a set monoracial point of resolution; but racial identity for multiracial youth is more nuanced, as their racial identity is more fluid, can change in different contexts or stages of life (Joseph & Briscoe-Smith, 2021), and some choose to forgo identifying with a racial grouping altogether (Renn, 2008), making measuring racial identity through traditional models or measures challenging for this demographic. Given this reality, this study takes a Critical Multiracial Theory (MultiCrit) frame to study and understand multiracial youth, which highlights the salience and importance of the combination of racial identities a multiracial person holds varying situationally as well as across time, and the importance of centering multiracial youth and their lived experiences (Harris, 2016). The study also utilizes the findings of Williams et al. (2020)’s model of racial identity development across the lifespan, which highlights “personal meaning making” of race as the outcome of racial identity development, instead of a set, most salient racial identity checkbox like previous models. In this study, responses from a national sample of multiracial eighth-grade students and their parents on the National Center for Education Statistics’ Early Childhood Learning Survey were analyzed through univariate, bivariate, and multivariate analyses in an exploratory cross-sectional quantitative study. Students’ responses on social-emotional learning (SEL) constructs and a self-concept questionnaire, in combination with parents’ responses on parent-child relationship constructs provided insight into how SEL affects self-concept, how the parent-child relationship affects self-concept, and how these two areas of a child’s life may interact to affect their self-concept, which was used as a proxy for racial identity. Self-concept, instead of a traditional racial identity measure was used because (1) there are no large scale studies that assess multiracial identity or use instruments that explicitly measure elements of racial identity for multiracial youth, (2) the MultiCrit framing and findings of Williams et al. (2020) showcase the importance of measuring racial identity beyond belonging in a single racial category, and (3) self-concept is the way that a person feels about themselves, especially in relation to social identities (Cherry, 2022), and Sellers, et al. (1998) state that racial identity is the part of a person's self-concept that is related to her/his membership within a race. The study results suggested SEL constructs are associated with self-concept, but there was no support for the association between parent-child relationship and self-concept. The findings of the study are the first to establish the groundwork for exploring the relationship between SEL and elements of racial identity for multiracial youth, and can provide support for future researchers to expand the ways they conceptualize and measure racial identity, as the importance of understanding multiracial youth’s racial identities is understanding the impact of racial identity on the whole individual, and how researchers and practitioners can support positive, healthy development overall.

Criticism of the UFCO has been widespread, ranging from politicians to consumer activists, and from labor leaders to historians, all portraying it as an overwhelmingly powerful corporation that shaped and often exploited its host countries. In this first history of the UFCO in Colombia, Marcelo Bucheli argues that the UFCO's image as an all-powerful force in determining national politics needs to be reconsidered. Using a previously unexplored source—the internal archives of Colombia's UFCO operation—Bucheli reveals that before 1930, the UFCO worked alongside a business-friendly government that granted it generous concessions and repressed labor unionism. After 1930, however, the country experienced dramatic transformations including growing nationalism, a stronger labor movement, and increasing demands by local elites for higher stakes in the banana export business. In response to these circumstances, the company abandoned production, selling its plantations (and labor conflicts) to local growers, while transforming itself into a marketing company. The shift was endorsed by the company's shareholders and financial analysts, who preferred lower profits with lower risks, and came at a time in which the demand for bananas was decreasing in America. Importantly, Bucheli shows that the effect of foreign direct investment was not unidirectional. Instead, the agency of local actors affected corporate strategy, just as the UFCO also transformed local politics and society.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships among the dependent variables racial identity attitudes, race-related stress, and coping strategies in a sample of African American students attending Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUS). The study also investigated the influence of gender on these variables. A quantitative research design was used. The dependent measures used were the Cross Racial Identity Scale (CRIS:Vandiver, et al, 2001), the Coping Strategy Indicator (CSI: Amirkhan, 1990) and the Index of Race-Related Stress- Brief (IRRS-B: Utsey, 1999). The independent measure, gender, was assessed using the demographic survey contained in the CRIS. This was a descriptive study that employed a passive correlation design to determine the presence or absence of relationships among study dependent variables using Pearson product moment correlation. The alpha level was set at .05. Additional GLM multiple analysis of variance and separate univariate analysis of variance were used to determine gender differences among racial identity, coping and race-related stress. The results indicated relationships between racial identity levels and race-related stress. There was evidence that participants with Internalization Multicultural Inclusive identities experienced more race-related stress than those in other racial identity statuses. Evidence also suggests African Americans use Avoidance to cope with race-related stress. Gender differences were found to exist in racial identity development and race-related stress. Women reported more Internalization Multicultural Inclusive racial identity. They also reported more race-related stress than the men in this study. Limitations to the study were noted. Implications from this study suggest counselors at HBCU's take assessments of racial identity development, race-related stress and gender issues as a part of initial screening for counseling services.
