Book excerpt: In the complex, multilingual societies of the 21st century, codeswitching is an everyday occurrence, and yet the use of students’ first language in the English language classroom has been consistently discouraged by teachers and educational policy-makers. This volume begins by examining current theoretical work on codeswitching and then proceeds to examine the convergence and divergence between university language teachers’ beliefs about codeswitching and their classroom practice. Each chapter investigates the extent of, and motivations for, codeswitching in one or two particular contexts, and the interactive and pedagogical functions for which alternative languages are used. Many teachers, and policy-makers, in schools as well as universities, may rethink existing ’English-only’ policies in the light of the findings reported in this book.

Book excerpt: This book focuses on the use of the first language in communicative or immersion-type classrooms. Through the intersection of theory, practice, curriculum and policy, the volume calls for a reconceptualization of code-switching as something that both proficient and aspiring bilinguals do naturally, and as a practice that is inherently linked with bilingual code-switching.

The main aim is to investigate the issue of teacher code-switching between English and Chinese in the Chinese EFL context. Teacher code-switching is a controversial issue and a focus of research for decades. However, it has not drawn much attention and has not been adequately explored in China although it is frequently observed in the Chinese EFL classroom. This situation arouses my interest, so I conduct the study, attempting to find out when and why EFL teachers code switch, and what teachers and learners think of this bilingual phenomenon. By this study, it is hoped that some useful information or implications can be got to contribute to the present EFL teaching in China. The study involves 120 student participants and 3 teacher participants.

Book excerpt: "An important element in L2 success appears to be how learners are treated: the teaching method used with them, the language they hear, and the environment in which they are teaching" (Cook, 1991:129). Thus, for Chinese EFL teachers, the teaching pattern they use is of great importance to students' target language acquisition. However, as do most Chinese college EFL teachers for non-English majors, they are facing a classroom teaching pattern dilemma: while holding the belief that teaching English only through English is necessary for learners' better English acquisition, teachers use code switching between English and Chinese as teaching support in their teaching practice. This study is designed to cast light on the effectiveness of the two different teaching patterns, English only and code switching between English and Chinese, in Chinese EFL classrooms. Two intact classes of Chinese second year college non-English major students were chosen as respectively an experimental and a control group.

Abstract: Abstract "A Conversation-Analytical Study of Code-Switching in Teacher-Student Interaction Outside the Classroom" Submitted by Wong May Sum for the degree of Master of Arts at The University of Hong Kong In June 2005 Code-switching is basically the natural consequence of contact between people and languages and the study of code-switching is indeed one of the central issues of bilingualism. For long, the research on code-switching has been carried out by a wide range of researchers from different perspectives like the linguistic and sociolinguistic ones. However, a more recent trend towards the study of code-switching is the application of Conversational Analytical approach as exemplified in the studies of Auer (1984a, 1984b, 1988 & 1995) This dissertation aims at applying this recent approach - Conversation Analysis towards the study of code-switching amid teacher-student interaction in a Hong Kong EMI secondary school. A total of 4 hours of recording were made on 20 different instances of teacher-student interaction outside class. The focus of analysis is on code-switching in teacher-student interaction after class time. This is the time when students usually chat with teachers about their school life in a relaxing manner. The results from this study reconfirm the fact that code-switching is common both inside and outside classroom. The analysis of the data also shows that the code-switching cases follow certain patterns. The concepts of discourse-related and participant-related code-switching are found to be useful in explaining the code-switching behaviour in teacher-student interaction outside classroom. The results from the study once again remind the educationalists in Hong Kong that code-switching is a hard fact during and after class despite their constant disapproval of the use of mixed code in schools as they believe that it affects language learning. However, it is likely that the code-switching phenomenon will continue in bilingual environment as in the case of Hong Kong where the interplay between Cantonese and English is a common sight. ii DOI: 10.5353/th_b3164793 Subjects: Code switching (Linguistics) - China - Hong Kong Bilingualism - China - Hong Kong Interaction analysis in education - China - Hong Kong

Book excerpt: With emphasis on teacher and learner code-switching patterns, this book is one of the first studies to comprehensively address these issues in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classrooms. The author examines teacher and learner code-switching through quantitative analysis, discourse analysis, conversation analysis, and mixed methods used in the study of code-switching. She addresses current debates on the amount of first language (L1) use, the functions of L1 use, the functions of teacher only code-switching patterns and the functions of teacher and learners shared code-switching patterns in foreign language classrooms. The book explores the implications of EFL classroom code-switching and how this can feed into better understanding of foreign language learning and teaching, language teacher development and new research directions in TESOL and applied linguistics. The principles and discussions of EFL classrooms are easily generalised to other language classrooms. This book will be of interest to researchers in the fields of second language acquisition, applied linguistics, and ELT, as well as researchers in the fields of sociology, education, and ethnomethodology.

The present study attempts to examine the advantages and disadvantages of code-switching in Chinese first and second year university non-English major EFL classes in a third-class university in south west China. Qualitative results came from interviews with 8 non-English major students and 10 teachers who taught non-English major. Questionnaire data were collected from 100 non-English major students, and examination data were collected from 60 non-English major students in Honghe University by using examination papers from the CET-4. The analysis focuses on the students' and teachers' attitudes toward the advantages and disadvantages of using Chinese in the EFL classroom and how students' learning and the teachers' teaching is influenced by using Chinese in EFL classroom. The findings provide evidence that code switching, or the use of Chinese in EFL classes is good only when it is used properly.

Book excerpt: The present study observed the use of educational code-switching to the L1 (Arabic) among six Arabic EFL teachers at Majmaah University, in Saudi Arabia. It used an a priori set of purposes based on Creswell (2003) and derived categories to examine the linguistic, social, and class management purposes behind code-switching. The instrument consisted of two parts: a demographic questionnaire and an audio recorder used in conjunction with a classroom observation sheet. Although some studies have suggested that educational code-switching to the L1 in EFL classrooms is an unconscious act (e.g., Moghadam, Abdul Samad, & Shahraki, 2012), the present study's results concluded the reverse: that the use of educational code-switching could be interpreted as an intentional practice among teachers in EFL classrooms. The results provided a more in-depth understanding of the use of educational code-switching to the L1 (Arabic). They agreed with previous studies that have found such code-switching to be very common among EFL teachers. Although participants displayed different linguistic, social, and class management purposes, analysis of the data revealed that certain purposes were more common than others, with linguistic purposes being far more common than social, class management, or other purposes. The most common linguistic purpose was to explain new words, and for class management was to clarify activities/exercises. Only two purposes, to engage in small talk with students and to connect between sentences, could not be categorized into one of the three main types.

Book excerpt: Academic Paper from the year 2018 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, Urmia University (International Students Admission Department), course: TEFL, language: English, abstract: The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between MA English students’ personality traits (PT) and their attitudes toward university teachers’ code switching (CS) in Urmia, Iran. In addition to that purpose, the correlation between each sub-scale of PT, including extraversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, neuroticism, and openness to experience, and teachers’ CS is analyzed. Finally, the overall attitudes of MA TEFL English students toward CS behavior are discussed, as well. To this end, 150 MA English students (70 males and 80 females) from State and Azad universities of Urmia City participated in this study. Two instruments were used for data collection: In order to measure students’ PT, the Big Five Inventory designed by John & Srivastava, 1999, was administered. Secondly, to measure students’ attitudes toward teachers’ CS, the questionnaire developed by Mingfa Yoa (2011) was used. According to the results, no significant relationship was found between the PT of students and their attitudes toward teachers’ CS. Furthermore, there was no significant relationship between students' PT and their attitudes toward CS regarding the five sub-scales of PT. The findings of the study indicate that the majority of students have similar attitudes toward the CS phenomenon. Their overall attitudes were positive toward teachers’ CS, and the majority of students agreed with CS in EFL settings. As a result, it was revealed that CS is an acceptable behavior in the EFL context from MA TEFL students’ perspectives.

Book excerpt: This study aimed to investigate the under-explored subject of code-switching (CS) used by EFL teachers in adolescent classrooms in the context of Vietnamese language centers. The gap that the present study attempts to fill is finding out teachers' attitudes towards CS, its frequency and the situations in which they use it as well as pedagogical and affective factors influencing their decisions regarding CS. The research involved both qualitative and quantitative methods in which the data was collected from different sources: questionnaires, classroom observations and semi-structured interviews with the observed teachers. Thirty teachers participated in the study. Five of them were first observed and interviewed before the distribution of the questionnaires. The results show that most teachers had positive attitudes towards the practice of code-switching. However, a minority of them though the prohibition of L1 would bring more benefits to students in the learning process. The frequency of teachers' code-switching varied in different situations but it was mostly used for explaining grammar explicitly, maintaining classroom discipline, and strengthening relationships with students. The most common percentage of L1 used in the classroom was from 10% to 30% but it was used more frequently if students were slow learners. The teachers believed pedagogical and affective factors such as students' level and teachers' effort to share identity and build stronger bonds with students influenced significantly their decision to codeswitch. Regarding code-switching use, pedagogical concerns appeared to affect them more than affective ones. These findings provide insights into Vietnamese EFL teachers' code-switching in teaching adolescents in a language center and reveal totally new perspectives compared with previous studies. Although code-switching is considered a great tool to make the lesson accessible to students, teachers should use it moderately and in a strategic way to avoid doing it habitually and automatically.
