Book excerpt: This book explores how a range of innovative disruptive technologies is about to combine to transform the insurance industry, the products it produces, and the way the industry is managed. It argues that unless current insurance providers react to these waves of disruption they will be swept away by new innovators. The book describes what insurers need to do to survive. The main aim is to get insurers to reimagine their industry away from the sale of a one-off product, into the sale of a series of real-time, data-based risk services. While parts of these disruptions have been discussed, this book is the first to bring all the issues together and unites them using a theoretical framework. This book is essential reading for insurance industry participants as well as to academics interested in insurance and understanding the key issues the industry currently faces.

Book excerpt: Reno was truly Hell on Wheels in the 1920's. The rest of the nation considered the town Sodom and Gomorra, but that's only half the truth. Reno offered everything in the way of adult entertainment, from speakeasy's and houses of ill-repute, to open gaming - legal or not. And it took plenty of sins by the founding fathers to make Reno "The biggest little city in the world." When the gold-veins of Tonopah and Goldfield ran out, the casino owners moved to Reno, where even greater riches awaited. Together, a group of four men (Nick Abelman, Bill Graham, Jim McKay, George Wingfield) took over Reno's casinos and held sway over the town for the next three decades. Together they administered policy, collected juice, ran politicians, and owned the red-light district and most of the town's casinos. When that wasn't enough they took over the banks and laundered money for crooks like "Pretty Boy" Floyd, Alvin Karpis, and Ma Barker's boys, and offered safety to "Baby Face" Nelson. It was a good gig. The Reno Four dictated policy all over Northern Nevada, taking special care of Reno and Lake Tahoe casinos up until the late 1950's. Their influence made Reno before Bill Harrah or "Pappy" Smith ever arrived, needing an introduction and permission to build their own casinos, Harold's Club and Harrah's. This is an expansion, an unabridged version of "Mob City - Reno" with much to tell about Nevada's gold mining towns.

Book excerpt: Sharyn Atkinson doesn't claim to have all the answers, but after twelve years of being single in Melbourne, she does have some hilarious—and cringe-worthy—stories to tell. In this light-hearted, playful, and honest account of her romantic experiences, you'll find stories of hope, loss, deception, discovery, sex, and love in all its many forms. Read it cover to cover, or pick a chapter that calls out to you—“Mr. Loaded," "Mr. International Jet Setter," or perhaps the intriguing "Mr. Stripper Electrician.” Though she would love to get married and start a family, Sharyn doesn’t plan to settle for anyone—even if that means navigating the murky waters of dating in your thirties. As she explains, “I don’t want to be someone’s handbag, mother, housemaid, bimbo, friend with benefits, notch on the belt, therapist, ‘bit on the side’, rebound, second wife, ‘cougar’, party girl, provider, or door mat. Call me crazy, but none of that really appeals to me.” Whether you’re single, happily married, or somewhere in between in the dating game, Sharyn’s honest, relatable, and disarming accounts of trying to find “the one” in a vast sea of “not quite” will have you nodding in understanding and considering the various people you’ve decided to make time for—or catch and release.

Book excerpt: The first Garnet Lacey novel in the delightful paranormal series by the author of The Vampire Princess of St. Paul novels! The line between magic and sanity is very thin. That’s part of why I, Garnet Lacey, quit cold turkey. Never touch the stuff. No exceptions. But magic is so addictive…and my inner Goddess Lilith is hard to resist. Besides, restraint isn’t easy when you manage Wisconsin’s premiere occult bookstore, and get customers like Sebastian Von Traum—piercing brown eyes, a sexy accent, and a killer body in denim and black leather. The only thing missing is an aura. Which means he’s dead… And that means trouble. I guess I’m a sucker for it. The Vatican witch hunters are on to us. My long-lost vampire ex has crawled out of the woodwork looking for action. And Sebastian’s frustrated ex is stirring in her grave. So what’s a girl to do if she’s hot for a dead man walking? Run like hell—and take full advantage of the nights…

This book was released on 2023-03-08 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The contributions to this edited volume engage with John Gardner's philosophical work on private law. The content is divided into three parts. The first part gathers contributions on general theoretical issues that bear upon private law. The second part is concerned with Gardner's well-known views on responding to wrongs and the justification of reparative duties - an issue that spans all of private law. The third part turns to theoretical issues within particular areas of private law. Its focus is Gardner's focus: tort law, but it also includes chapters on contract law and equity. The primary aim of Private Law and Practical Reason is to facilitate a critical assessment of the private law thinking of one of the most important legal philosophers of the last fifty years. Gardner's contributions to private law theory are recognised to be amongst the most significant and philosophically rich. This work assembles a group of contributors with diverse theoretical commitments, many of whom have not directly engaged previously with Gardner's work, and is intended to act as a reference point for central debates in private law theory, such as the role of moral duties, the justification of reparative obligations, and, more broadly, the role of reasons in private law.
