Book excerpt: ANDREW HAS grown up near the Plymouth docks hearing the sailors talk about America. Knowing that Andrew's heart is set on going to the new world, his father sends him up to London to serve as page in the house of Walter Raleigh. In Queen Elizabeth's court, Raleigh's the strongest voice in favor of fighting with Spain for a position in the New World, and everyone knows that it's just a matter of time before Her Majesty agrees to an expedition. Can Andrew prove himself fit to go on an expedition to the New World? Meticulously researched and brilliantly crafted, combining fictional characters with historical, Andrew's tale offers up a vivid look at the cloakand- dagger politics of the time and a genuine feel for what it must have been like for the first Europeans to set foot on the beautiful, bountiful, savage shores of America.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sir Walter Raleigh was truly the Renaissance man of Elizabethan England: soldier and diplomat serving in the wars between Spain and England, courtier and Captain of the Queen's Guard in Elizabeth’s flamboyant court, explorer of a New World and colonizer of Virginia, member of Parliament and devotee of science, musician and literary patron, historian and poet. A dashing and complex figure, often in advance of his times and rebellious against them, Raleigh had the misfortune not simply to combine brilliance and versatility with arrogance and intolerance, but to live beyond the expansiveness of Elizabeth’s reign into the sober times of her successor, James Stewart. Knighted by the Queen, Raleigh enjoyed her favor until he was eclipsed by Robert Devereux, the Earl of Essex. Thereafter his fortunes fell, and he was finally imprisoned and tried by James I on grounds of treason. This book, conveying the excitement and flavor of Raleigh and his times, offers a new judgment of the man, and particularly of the famous trial that led to his imprisonment in the Tower and to his subsequent execution for treason. Mr. Wallace points out that, though the charges against Raleigh were questionable, the trial was legally just. On the other hand, the law itself, the court procedure, and the behavior of the prosecutor, Sir Edward Coke, were essentially unjust. After Raleigh’s death, jurists rallied to his defense, and changes in law and procedure were finally instituted. The trial thus has a historic importance not only in Raleigh’s life but also in English legal history. Originally published in 1959. Book excerpt: An enthralling new biography of the most exciting and charismatic adventurer in the history of the English-speaking world Tall, dark, handsome, and damnably proud, Sir Walter Raleigh was one of history's most romantic characters. An explorer, soldier, courtier, pirate, and poet, Raleigh risked his life by trifling with the Virgin Queen's affections. To his enemies—and there were many—he was an arrogant liar and traitor, deserving of every one of his thirteen years in the Tower of London. Regardless of means, his accomplishments are legion: he founded the first American colony, gave the Irish the potato, and defeated Spain. He was also a brilliant operator in the shark pool of Elizabethan court politics, until he married a court beauty, without Elizabeth's permission, and later challenged her capricious successor, James I. Raleigh Trevelyan has traveled to each of the principal places where Raleigh adventured—Ireland, the Azores, Roanoke Islands, and the legendary El Dorado (Orinoco)—and uncovered new insights into Raleigh's extraordinary life. New information from the Spanish archives give a freshness and immediacy to this detailed and convincing portrait of one of the most compelling figures of the Elizabethan era.
