Book excerpt: From one of the greatest novelists of the American West comes a surprising and riveting story set in Montana and New York during the Harlem Renaissance, drawing together an unlikely set of thwarted performers in one last inspired grasp at life's set of gold rings: love and renown. Susan Duff -- the bossy, indomitable schoolgirl with a silver voice from the pages of Doig's most popular work, Dancing at the Rascal Fair -- has reached middle age alone, teaching voice lessons to the progeny of Helena's high society. Wesley Williamson -- business scion of a cattle-empire family -- has fallen from the heights of gubernatorial aspirations, forced out of a public career by political foes who uncovered his love affair with Susan. Years later, Susan is taken off guard when Wes arrives at her door with an unusual request: to train his chauffeur, Monty, in the ways of voice and performance. Prairie Nocturne is the saga of these three people and their interlocked destinies. Monty is distantly known to Susan from their childhoods in the Two Medicine country, yet an enforced stranger because of the racial divide. When she realizes he possesses a singing voice of rare splendor, Susan joins Wes's Pygmalion-like project to launch Monty on a performing career -- only to find the full force of the Ku Klux Klan in their way. As Monty and Susan overcome treacherous obstacles, Wes's mysterious motives unsettle everyone, including himself, and the trio's crossed fates form a deeply longitudinal novel that raises everlasting questions of allegiance, the grip of the past, and the costs of career and passion.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This classic bestselling novel about a man who encounters a woman whose power to destroy is as strong as her power to love evokes Hemingway in its naturalistic portrayal of elemental forces in both nature and humanity. Ellen's beauty was radiant, and Harland had been so struck with her personality and the strength of her character that he knew he could never leave her. When he found that she returned his adoration, he could marry her with joy, bothered just momentarily by a strange premonition. It was only later, when the premonition became a horrifying reality, that he realized the glowing loveliness of the woman he had married was the true face of evil.

Revolution, Radicalism and Reform provides a foundation for the study of the political, economic and social developments of the period. Topics covered include: Pitt and Liverpool, the French wars, the age of Peel, economy and industrialisation, poverty and Chartism. Book Synopsis Poems for Our Grandchildren by : Edith G. Bauman
Download or read book Poems for Our Grandchildren written by Edith G. Bauman and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2011-10-26 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: hared memories bind families and friends together. Not least important among these are memories of stories, songs, and poems, repeated often and incorporated into everyday thought and expression. The child who grows up unaware of literature of the past is surely impoverished. To fill this vacuum with the deluge of current song lyrics and drama from television and movies is scarcely a satisfactory solution. We heard many of the poems assembled here from our mothers, and have often read or recited most of these to our children. The volumes from which they came are falling apart and long since out of print, or too bulky for convenient handling. Thus we saw the need for a compact selection. Although from a variety of scattered sources, we leaned heavily on a collection that appeared, early in the 20th century, in the magazine Normal Instructor Primary Plans subsequently published as Poems Teachers Ask For by F. A. Owen Publishing Company, of Danville, N.Y. Many of the poems, such as the Mother Goose rhymes, are no longer attributable to individuals, and are heard in different versions. Where authors are known, we have given the name and have adhered to original words, spelling, and punctuation. In the very few instances in which wording has been changed, an asterisk has been placed by the authors name and the changes noted at the end of the book. Since the collection was first assembled, our own grandchildren have become the readers, rather than the read-to. Yet, to our knowledge, no substantial body of new poetry has come along to take the place of these traditional works that range from light fancy to the joys and perils of growing up and the heroism of those who came before us. Thus these out of date poems may be even more important to the children of the 21st century than to those for whom they were originally compiled. This small collection ranges from familiar nursery rhymes to somber works on the struggles and valor of our forebearers. It is our hope that these poems may bring mirth, joy, and an appreciation of our heritage to new generations of children and to their parents and grandparents

THE HORSEMASTER'S DAUGHTER Hunter Calhoun is a widower shadowed by the scandal of his wife's death; he buries himself in his work of breeding racehorses. When a prized stallion arrives from Ireland crazed and unridable, Hunter is forced to seek help. Eliza Fylte has inherited her father's gift for gentling horses. And when Hunter arrives with his wild steed, her healing spirit reaches further yet to the intense, bitter man who needs her, just as she needs him. Eliza understands what Hunter refuses to see...that love is the greatest healer of all. But can her kindness manage to teach such an untethered man what truly matters in life? HALFWAY TO HEAVEN At a White House gala, Abigail Cabot discovers the man of her dreams. Only, he's not interested… yet. So the gifted lady astronomer, whose passion for the stars has left her lacking in social graces, seeks someone to educate her in the art of seduction. Jamie Calhoun's handsome looks and easy charm have made him as popular on the Senate floor as he is with the capital's most attractive women. He befriends Abigail as a means to a political end, but somewhere along the way the plan goes awry. First laughter and then love take them completely by surprise in this wildly romantic story.

Download or read book A Nuclear Engineer in the Twentieth Century written by Robert Kupp and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2005 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How does a chemical engineer, discharged from the Navy, drafted into the Army and assigned to the Medics, get on the Manhattan Atom Bomb Project and become a Nuclear Engineer in the Twentieth Century? With a great deal of luck and a little talent. In addition to telling this story, the book is written for a lay audience, but for someone having technical and scientific interests, and wanting to better understand the development of nuclear technology in the US. Radiation safety, power economics, risk/benefit analyses, and the societal issues of nuclear waste disposal, including such politically non-touchable areas as -"How many dollars to save a life?" and relatedly - "How safe is safe enough?" - are all discussed. Mr. Kupp's anecdotes of his youth, his home life, and his 30-year sailing history, all contribute to the realism of the book and round out the story of his life to more than just a technical career.
