Book excerpt: Papa sent his children, Fayze and Brother, to the Mankato Orphanage on the outskirt of the small mining town. A sad place for any child to live, their days are filled with hard work, no schooling and the cruel demands of a headmistress who has secrets of her own. The cellar...a place of punishment, a place where no child should ever be forced to go. Fayze stared into the pitch blackness of the cellar, unable to see the stairs that led below. She was terrified, but it was her feet that led her to the first step and then another...step after dusty step, down into the dark stillness, holding tight to the railing, Fayze tugged at the dangling cobwebs that tangled in her hair. It was then she saw the warm glow of a lantern lit by a small boy. But as quickly as he appeared, he was gone...Could there be something unearthly living down in the cellar as everyone thought? Would Papa ever take them home again?

Book excerpt: When Carolyn’s grown daughter tells her she needs to “get a life,” Carolyn decides it’s time to step out of her familiar routine as a single woman in San Francisco and escape to her mother’s home in the Canary Islands. Since Carolyn’s mother is celebrating her seventieth birthday, the timing of Carolyn’s visit makes for a perfect surprise. The surprise, however, is on Carolyn when she sees Bryan Spencer, her high school summer love. It’s been seven years since Carolyn lost her husband, but ever since that tragic day, her life has grown smaller and closed in. The time has come for Carolyn to get her heart back. It takes the gentle affection of her mother and aunts, as well as the ministering beauty and song of the islands to draw Carolyn into the fullness of life. She is nudged along by a Flamenco dance lesson, a defining camel ride and the steady gaze of Bryan’s intense blue-gray eyes. Is it too late for Carolyn to trust Bryan? Can Carolyn believe that Bryan has turned into something more than the wild beach boy who stole her kisses so many years ago on a balmy Canary night? Carolyn is reminded that Christopher Columbus set sail from the Canary Islands in 1492 on his voyage to discover the New World. Is she ready to set sail from these same islands to discover her new life?

His life is full, yet empty -- crowded with emotional, psychological, and philosophical dichotomies. He is John Doe wandering across the landscape and recent history of America. Henry Canary, a middle-aged writer and part-time truck driver, receives a surprise visit from Kelly Kane, the illegitimate daughter of his first girlfriend. Although Henry is not her father, 25-year-old Kelly wants to write a story about him for her magazine. She tracks him down with the intention of interviewing him, but gets involved in his life. As they travel from Santa Cruz to Los Angeles in his truck, she learns the story of a boy growing up in a factory town in Connecticut in the 1950s. During trips from L.A. to Las Vegas to Death Valley and Arizona, Kelly learns about the happy, sad, humorous and tragic events from grade school to college to Vietnam and back and hears about his succeseses and failures in love and life. Henry tries not to fall in love with the girl who reminds him so much of her mother Kelly tries not to fall in love with Henry as she learns about his family, friends, lovers and other strangers. She hears loving descriptions of favorite people, places and things as well as the tragedies and losses that we all endure in our own lives. Henry talks about his first crush at 14 on a 26-year-old woman; a high school street battle dubbed the Creampuff War; his on/off, love/hate relationship with Kelly's mother; his tour in Vietnam where he kills an "enemy"; his move to New York City after the Army; his girlfriend who was a third generation orphan; his job at a bank where the workers plot to kill their boss; his cross-country adventure with a friend and two call girls; his whirlwind marriage to a girl he hardly knew; the Summer of Love in San Francisco; graduate school; the birth and death of his son; driving a taxi in New York City; his short-lived career as a TV sit-com writer in Hollywood; the various women that came and went after his divorce; the sex, drugs and rock and roll of Greenwich Village in the early 80s; his third move to California, and his philosophis on life and God's mistakes. The story ends with an unpredictably surprising revelation.
